Waking up in a red state.

Good morning, from Wisconsin.

My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over....

Or maybe just... The dream is over...And so, dear friends, you'll just have to carry on...

If they trust what they ran on and hold the line they will do fine. They have to trust they are right.

I was in your lovely Madison a couple of weeks ago (my God your farmer's market is amazing; go eat at Nostrano, too) and Obama had just been there for a rally and Biden was apparently there while I was there. And the result was... apparently they kept Madison but lost the rest of the state, and lost Feingold to boot. All over Madison, I'm sure people are saying "How could Feingold have lost? Everyone I know voted for him!" But the reality is that the Obama agenda can barely hang onto its pockets of support like college towns and... well, California and Nevada. Okay, that's big. But still. He has to fight to hold onto his strongholds at this point. I really think, if just one person steps into the primary at this point, breaks the spell, five will the next day.

Anybody need a used copy of The Emerging Democratic Majority?

अनामित म्हणाले...

Me too, here in Pennsylvania, but it was too darn close for my liking.

Of course, the Country's still screwed, because the federal budget is beyond repair.

It was a slaughter here in Ohio. Every statewide office went to Republicans. They took the state House (already had the Senate) and governorship.

Reps got a net gain of 5 US House seats. The delegation is now 13-5, GOP.

The better job they do, the less some of us will like it. We all have our hand in the till, but far fewer really put much into it.

You can't create permanent jobs without making it worth while to the people who hire. But our culture has been hard at work demonizing them for years. This is gonna be tough. For some people just leaving others alone is near impossible.

Phil 314 म्हणाले...

In AZ, Republicans swept all of the statewide races. Republicans took two of the three contested Dem seats (Mitchell and Kirkpatrick) but the Dems will probably hold onto the third, Giffords.

But the most astounding: First the background (from RealClearPolitics)
The Seventh District of Arizona is the lineal descendant of a district that was created in 1962. From 1962 through 1990, it was represented by Mo Udall. After the Fifth (now the Eighth) district was split off in 1982, the district was made heavily Democratic; no Democrat has ever won less than 59 percent of the vote here.

And as of this morning:
GRIJALVA 60037 48.5%; MCCLUNG 56978 46%

In a heavily hispanic district in the year of SB 1070 that's just....WOW

Brian O'Connell म्हणाले...

Obama was here all the time, it seemed. Didn't do a bit of good.

The nice thing about this election was that we didn't go as far as exterminating Democratic rule. The country, in its conservational wisdom, has set up reservations where blue state politics not only can exist but can, apparently, do so in as close to its natural existence as possible.

Viewing stations will be set up on the borders of California for observation of unrestrained Democratic government lived out in a free, though secured, environment.

A warning: While scheduled tours are encouraged, please do not feed the animals.

Dust Bunny Queen म्हणाले...

अनामित म्हणाले...

Once again...as sausage-y as it can look at times, anyone else proud that we handle transitions of power relatively well?

I volunteered to work at the polls yesterday. I was so impressed at the way our elections are run by volunteers (at least at the ground level).

People stood in line for half an hour to vote. They didn't complain when we let someone who had stood in the ballot line, then had to switch to the register line (almost all for changes of address), cut to the front of the voting line once his registration was done.

One young woman stood in line for 45 minutes only to learn she didn't have the right proof of residence to change her address and vote. She went home to get something else - and that wasn't right. She went home again to get the proper paperwork. She really wanted to vote, as did over 70% of the people in my ward.

Most of the poll workers were polite and gracious, although I wanted to tell the college student who was registering changes of address with me to quit calling everyone older than her by their first names as she registered them. And then there was the lady at poll worker training who wanted to know how to register the Albanians.

Overall, though, I was happy that we have such a great system where so many people are involved.

From Ace's site, this A.M.:

California's most dire problems right now are related to public-employee obligations (pensions and healthcare). The power of public-employee unions in California have held the State and local governments in thrall for years, and with the election of Jerry Brown as Governor, the people of California have opted to spray kerosene on a blaze that was already threatening to overwhelm them.

[...]

Well, the die has been cast, California. You have placed your fate into the hands of a political party and a governmental machine that cares for nothing except what it can squeeze out of you to keep the party-train rolling. There will come a time in the not-too-distant future when you will have cause to bitterly regret what happened last night, and to wonder when the disaster truly became unavoidable. Well, now you know: it happened last night when you elected Jerry Brown as your governor. You chose to kowtow to the labor unions; you chose to believe comforting lies rather than the horrible truth.

You will reap the whirlwind.

The most critical priority was accomplished, for one piece of the government to move to Rep control.

The reps not winning the Senate is ok with me, as long and the Maine Sens and Brown aren't able to prevent a filibuster by themselves. The Maines in particular seem to regard all government spending as a positive.

Dem control prevents the Reps from deciding their position should allow them to engage in the spendthrift model, plus it keeps the Dems from blaming everything on Reps.

I sure hope when Obama called Boehner last night and talked about how he was looking forward to working together Boehner had a tape of Obama relentlessy nasty campaign speeches to play for him.

The patent firm I work for moved (literally) across the state line into NV, with, coincidentally no income or corporate taxes, right around the time of the .com bust. After merging with a much larger firm, we are now back in CA (not my office, thankfully). But we are there to sell our much lower priced services into that market. Plus, the tax advantages of Nevada corporations, etc.

The problem, as always, is that when so many people bail from California, many of them bring along their California politics. Which is arguably why the states around California seem to have been moving to the left politically (and, yes, Colorado too). And, yes, maybe why we have Harry Reid for another six years, and Janet Napolitano was able to win so often in Barry Goldwater's home state.

It's the uneducated welfare class that makes blue states blue, not their Ph'Ds.

Yesterday, 348,000 voters turned out to vote. There are 13,000 households on welfare in Santa Clara County. Thus the 2:1 margin by which Democrats are favored in Silicon Valley cannot be explained by the welfare population, even if they were all registered, and even if they all turned out to vote. (Total voter registration is 779,000, so less than half of eligible voters actually voted.)

jerryofva म्हणाले...

FLS:

Are you that stupid? Let's do some math. There are approximately 37 million people in California. (falling every day) The number of people who voted yesterday constituted less then 1% of state's population. So if Boxer/Brown got 2/3 of the vote then that's .6%. It's in the roundoff error.

The state is blue because of the welfare class and the public servants who feed off them. There are no longer enough productive people and enterprises left in the state to turn it red. The exodus will continue until the state collapses
