"I would take her on. I like her, but I'd take her on" — says Donald Trump, about Sarah Palin.

IN THE COMMENTS: Irene answers my question: "The fact that we elected The Apprentice?"

Paul Zrimsek observes that "Trump" sounds like a name one of the Palin females would give to a baby boy.

UPDATE: Years later, Trump in fact runs for President and I return to this post but find that the link (to Politico) has — in what feels like a metaphor — gone crazy. Via the Wayback Machine, here's the article:
Does Donald Trump want to offer his trademark “You’re fired” line to President Obama?

The business magnate and host of "The Apprentice" says he's once again thinking about throwing his hat in the ring and running for president.

"I am thinking about things. And I'm looking at this country ... and what's happened in terms of respect, and the respect for this country is just not there," Trump tells ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos.

"I have many people from China that I do business with, they laugh at us. They feel we're fools. And almost being led by fools. And they can't believe what they're getting away with.”

Trump added that if "the country continues to be taken advantage of by the world," and his poll numbers are there, he would get in the race as a Republican.

As for potential challenger Sarah Palin, Trump says, "She's very interesting. And don't underestimate her."

The former Alaska governor wouldn’t deter him, though. "I would take her on. I like her, but I'd take her on," he said.

That would be great. Choose between Trump or Palin.

What possesses people to make them think they could be President?

In the case of Trump? Good question.

I think Scott nailed it, though:

"Narcissism."

Sure he could take her on, heck he could take on Mike Tyson…the question is, “Could he take her on and WIN?” And there the answer is, just like with Mike Tyson, is “No.” I think we’d had enough celebrities confusing competence in one area with ability in another….

As to POTUS why do people seek to become surgeons, Generals, or NFL Quarterbacks…because they have Ego AND Talent. Without that Ego no one would ever run, and if you don’t have the huevos to think you can run and win, you’d stink as POTUS. There’s nothing wrong with owning up to the Ego, the problem with many “leaders” is that their “leadership” becomes nothing more than ego gratification or that their talents are over-matched by their egos…”The Peter Principle.”

One more celebrity personality's hat goes into the GOP ring to muddy the waters, lite weights all. It is becoming the 12 dwarves surrounding the Snow Woman. But who will the GOP turn to to clear up all this confusion?

If Sarah were just a little younger, Track and Trig could well end up with a brother named Trump.

Trump is an attention whore.

I doubt he seriously thinks that he could be President, or even wants to be President. He does know "good" televisions, if by good you mean a bunch of dopes watch it.

Her government experience Trumps the Donald's.

Agreed. Trump is very savy. The *perception* that he could thrive in that arena is what he's after.

Am I the only one who would seriously consider voting for the Donald? Sure, he's an attention whore and narcissist, but he is also a man who Knows How The World Works. Unlike most politicians (even conservatives, see, e.g., GWB), he doesn't have silly notions about being nice to people and having them be nice in return. He undestands incentives.

We need more of that.

Lovelylyssa, I’m sure The Donald DOES know how the world works, he’s been wiped out at least twice, so far…first in real estate and now in casinos, what he does understand is PR, that’s for sure.

Yeah that's a thread win right there.

Trump should try out on "American Idol" first.

People, not to mention The Donald, need to remember he's lost as many fortunes as he's made. In some ways, he's not that great a businessman as he is a marketer.

PS Irene, it's not a bad point. You don't have to duck.

Thank you, Lem. But I do not have the disposition to be President. I am an authoritiarian and a disciplinarian. I sometimes don't play well with others.

I could have been a Tsarina.

Fascinating that he regards Palin, rather than Obama, as the one to be taken on.
