Who do the conservative bloggers want to see as the Republican nominee in 2012?

The way I read this poll, the correct answer is: Mitch Daniels!

Think about it.

IN THE COMMENTS: People start right in with the news that Daniels is short. I say: Smaller government — and if that means a smaller President, so be it.

I like Mitch too, being a fellow Presbyterian and all. But we, first need to take up donations for him to buy elevator shoes and an outgoing personality. Then it should not take that much effort to fulfill our fantasies of a smart white guy earning the Presidency on ideas alone. And then we will live happily ever after.

I live in Indiana. He's OK. It's OK. He's trying to enshrine property tax rates in the constitution. I'm against that, but the sentiment is good. He's done some good things with outsourcing and creative revenue generation. I'm not wild about our welfare situation, but people expect something.
And I'm not sure why making parents pay for the school bus when they live within walking distance of school was deemed unconstitutional...seems like a good way to have the buses be self-sustaining and have the education budget spent on eduction, but that is all far-too-specific for this discussion.

Mitch Daniels certainly seems like the least threatening of the bunch. Is that bad or good? Is being polarizing more likely to get a candidate elected than being unremarkable?

Now, let's change direction: which of the following candidates would you be LEAST LIKELY to support for President in 2012?....

#4 (out of 9) Palin

So I'm confused Professor, why didn't you say Chris Christie?

She already has 22 votes to his 13. Let's say that the 7 "Least likely to support" votes Palin got are all from people who did not vote for Daniels. This means that Daniels would pick-up 7 votes, bringing his total to 20. Still less than Palin's 22.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe El Toro is south of San Diego, as opposed to Twentynine-Palms, which up around Palm Springs. Otherwise, I agree.

A good follow on would be reactivate the 8 Regular Army divisions inactivated by Willie for the Peace Dividend (translation: stimulus; translation: political payoff) and put them on the border, also - 1 in CA, 2 each in NM and AZ, 3 in TX.

Defending the country from border marauders is a traditional mission of the Army and it's time to observe our military traditions.

Well, I don’t see a whole lot of folks screaming, “yes, YES, Oh Mitch!” here do you? I didn’t even read the poll the same way Althouse did…Heck, I saw it as a vote for Palin, and kick to the groin for Huckabee.

For others, Cain is the absolute Fave of my Life Partner. Cain is very impressive, in person, never heard his program, but Partner and I heard him speak once. He spoke well, was very impressive, human, funny….He is a kind of “Inside Baseball/Dark Horse” Candidate, I mean you have to be a Conservative to know of him. And that is going to be a drag, Palin and many others have name recognition already, or at least GREATER name recognition. So he has to work harder, I would think, to get his name out than others would…meaning more money for less bang, on the campaign trail.

He is connected to the Bush/Rove wing and will take a 2012 dive for them after he blocks Palin, if he can. You will find his position on immigration over our border with Mexico matches W's positions that want to win hispanic votes more than they want to enforce the border. But that's fine, you like Mitch. How do you interpret this poll, where 8 of the 72 made him their first choice among all possibilities, which 19 picked Christie and 11 picked Palin, as being a victory for Daniels....that's delusional.

Uhh, you need to do some more research on Brewer. I mean, I'll vote for her this fall and I'm not a right-wing kinda guy. But Jan Brewer's fame due to SB 1070 fell in her lap. She was very quiet about it as it worked its way through the AZ House and Senate and has already suggested modifying it now that the courts have blocked key parts of it.

Prior to SB 1070 (and the 13 second pause) she was known as the Arizona Governor trying to get a TAX INCREASE to address the budget crisis. That doesn't sound like your typical right-wing/conservative pol.

And finally, if the key necessity of a VP candidate is to spruce up the ticket and have an energizing voice on the campaign trail, Jan Brewer is not that gal.

Yes, O'Donnell seems ditzy on that Bill Mahr show (the one that was cancelled when he called US soldiers "cowardly"). That was her job -- she was trying to bring comic relief to an unbearably unentertaining show, and probably helped the back-stabbing Mahr stay on the air for a few extra months.

What are her policies, on actual legislation that might be voted upon? I'm not sure if the senate will be voting on any anti-masturbatory legislation, or any bans on dinosaurs.

He's not my man. My man is Thune. Because he's so tall and handsome.

Mitch isn't the worst choice, and the hair on his left nut would make a better president than what we have now, but he's not my first choice for what might be the most critical presidential election in my lifetime. He's an extremely intelligent man, and he seems decent and probably doesn't have any significant skeletons in his closet. He'd be good on most economic issues. I'd be concerned about the Supreme Court nominations that he might make, though. And this is not the year to compromise on someone less conservative. This is the year to go hard to the right and offer a clear difference to the electorate.

Hilary becomes Prez.

John Henry

Pastafarian म्हणाले...

John, that scenario seems about as likely as both Obama and Biden being abducted by aliens and President Pelosi then taking over.

But in your scenario, black voters would stay home, and if the economy is still in the shitter and teetering on the brink of outright Apocalypse, as it is now, then Hillary would be lucky to carry 4 states against any Republican.

Obama resigns in early 2011.

Resigns?!?! Really and why would he resign? They will carry him out feet first, but he won’t resign, Michelle would Keeeeel him if he did. Now it’s possible that if Hillary is Veep in 2013 Obama might get a bad oyster or two and die, in office..and then there’d be the tragic firearms “accident” involving Michelle, and two 20mm Gatling guns…but otherwise Obama will be leaving office after he serves the usual 8-10 years in Office. I think he intends to tour all 57 states, in farewell.

dbp म्हणाले...

I think John is onto something. I don't think Obama will resign, but I expect that he won't run for re-election.

Obama cares about one thing more than anything else, himself. Much better to relax and enjoy his millions in lecture fees as a man who did not run than as a Carteresqe looser who will be lucky to get 100 electoral votes in 2012.

Pastafarian म्हणाले...

Joe, dbp, I agree that there's zero chance of Obama resigning -- that would be admitting failure, and that's not possible for someone with an ego like Obama. He could get caught snorting coke off the belly of a naked Russian spy, and he wouldn't resign.

But dbp might be right about his choosing not to run. Being president is a lot of work, and it cuts into a fellow's golf game. He doesn't seem to be enjoying himself much, and with Obama, it does seem to be all about him.

And I can't think of another reason for them to swap Hillary and Biden, other than padding her resume setting her up for a run in 2016. She'll be too old in 2020.

But again, I don't see this as a winner for the Dems. African Americans vote something like 90% D, so that makes them about 20% of all Democrat voters. That move will alienate a large number of them, and the won't jump to the Rs, but if half of them stayed home, that would have been enough to make Obama lose in 2008 to McCain, for Christ's sake. By 2012, after this Democrat economic debacle, nominating Hillary would cause one of the biggest landslides in history.

Thorley Winston म्हणाले...

IIRC the proposal was a one-year payroll tax holiday for FICA offset (at least in part) by cancelling unspent funds from the “stimulus” bill and other appropriations bills, a hiring freeze on federal employees and allowing the President to block spending projects.

If I supported stimulus policies, I’d probably favor a payroll tax holiday as its one of the quickest and most efficient ways to get money in hands of people directly (by letting them keep more of it – imagine that).

That seems to be true but I have never understood why.

In over 200 years we have had 2, count 'em 2 (Jefferson & Bush 1), sitting VPs win election to the presidency.

Going back to 1900, we have had several VP's get the presidency and fail to be re-elected (Ford, LBJ)

I just don't see why everyone thinks being VP is such a great resume enhancer in the quest for Prez.

I think it only works if Obama resigns and Hlary is Prez running for re-election in 2012.

As for the black vote, as someone else mentioned: Suppose Obama goes on the tube and in his resignation speech says something like: "I am resigning because I have found that America is just not ready for a Black president. Hilary will continue fighting for racial justice. At some time in the future white America may lose its bigotry and elect another black president. Yada, yada, yada..."

Or, Obama might just decide not to come back to the US after his 12 day trip to Indonesia and points east.

He leaves 2 days after the election. I thought I had read that he had moved it up to leave election night but I can't find that just now.

Of coruse, the height of irony is that, while Obama is using this to extort anmesty, its the blue cities like Chicago and New York that will be attacked.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe El Toro is south of San Diego

The only thing south of San Diego is Mexico. The city limits are contiguous with the border.

The county limits are contiguous with the border. San Ysidro and Imperial Beach are two cities closer to Mexico than San Diego.

From the comments:

Daniels - unappealing. Can't get enough of the shallow female vote (the ones that vote for the "cute" candidates) to make a decent showing.

Christie - would have to give up his governorship mid-term to run. He would be labeled a "quitter", with all that entails. But it would be fun to watch.

Barbour - be serious. The mood of the country is for new faces and ideas. Barbour is a pure GOP apparatchik who hasn't had an original thought since 1954.

Ryan - we've seen what happens when you elect young, inexperienced people to the job of President of the United States. Needs more seasoning.

Palin - I'm sick to death of Sarah -- and I happen to agree with her on almost everything! At this point, I'm so sick of Palin I wouldn't follow her into my own house, let alone a voting booth. Sarah Palin is no longer a candidate, and become a brand name and corporation.

Thune - you're joking, right? That's the Republican John Edwards; a nice haircut, and the perfect dipstick for measuring the depth of the surface.

Hucakbee - I'd pluck my own eyes out before I voted for Huckabee. Anyone who might trip over his own feet in his indecent haste to be photographed at Bob Jones University definitely does not get my vote.

Pawlenty - The republican John Kerry, sans the alcoholic wife and yellow spandex. He's just freakin' creepy.

Pence - his only qualification, in Conservative circles, is that Ann Coulter once anointed him "A REAL Conservative"...and then his record came to light.

Brewer - seems like a nice lady, but a one-trick pony. If she were SHOOTING illegal aliens instead of asking them for ID, I'd vote for her in a heartbeat.

Since Newt (RINO), Romney (Mormons can't win in the Bible Belt) and Guiliani (pro-gun-control, pro-choice, doesn't want gays marched to the ovens) probably won't make it through a 2012 primary, I'm wondering who's left that might actually WIN come 2012.

Matthew -- You are a leftist Democrat. Who cares what you think about candidates you will not select and will not vote for?

It's like me saying I don't want to fuck your girlfriend because she is a hag. So what?

Sorry, I meant that the arizona border would be a great location for a Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center, like 29 Palms.

Why not Fort Huachuca? Bring back the Cavalry. It has an airfield.

Immigration is such a weird deal.

Illegal immigration obviously brings down wages and obviously contributes to unemployment even in a good economy and obviously drains government services.

On the other hand, all immigration (legal or not) brings a steady supply of hardworking people dedicated to a better life and infuses our culture with dynamism and energy.

The obvious solution that everyone should be able to agree on is a wall between the United States and Mexico -- a pretty wall, like the Great Wall of China. Once that's there, the question is simply how many legal immigrants do we want to have.

I don't understand why a wall is considered in polite company to be such a crazy idea.

The way I read this poll, the correct answer is: Mitch Daniels!

Then you don't know how to read, Ann. It's a shame that someone as intelligent as you would push democrat Mitch Daniels as if he's some sort of conservative (when everbody knows he's a closet Democrat).

Mitch Daniels tied for third in this poll. Please tell us how you read this as him winning.

Poll Question: If you had to choose today, which of the following candidates would you be most likely to support for President in 2012?

1) Chris Christie (26.4%)
2) Sarah Palin (15.3%)
3) Mike Pence (11.1%)
4) Mitch Daniels (11.1%)

Exactly how did Mitch Daniels win this straw poll, Ann?

But the more important question is why would you attempt to misrepresent the results of this poll to your readership, Ann?

Oh yea ... I'm reminded that you supported and voted for Barack Obama. Hmmmmmmm.

@Seven Machos:

Hey! That's no way to talk about your mother, Douchebag!

I'm a republican. The difference between me and the panty-bunched conservative crowd is that I want someone to run who a)can WIN, b) is competent, and c) looks to fixing/running what the government is suppopsed to be fixing/running -- and then minds his/her own fucking business after that.

See, I want a leader who is a merely a capable administrator ...you want Jesus.

That's why "Conservatives" are continually disappointed when the "Conservative Flavor of the Week" turns out to be a mere mortal, and usually dumber than dogshit.
