"2012: How Sarah Barracuda Becomes President -- Why do you think Barack Obama is being so nice to Michael Bloomberg?"

New York Magazine has a great title for this article (by John Heilemann):
... Until not long ago, the only people who took seriously the notion that Palin would make a White House bid in 2012, let alone win the Republican nomination, were those who really do live at the unicorn ranch—and spend their time there huffing pixie dust. When Palin quit the Alaska governorship in 2009, her political career seemed over.
Oh? Well, let me embed this clip from a Bloggingheads I did 2 days after that resignation:

I was right!

Back to Heilemann. It's a long article... and I don't think it's all that hard to see how Palin could win, so I'm not that inclined to slog through all the details. But speaking of living at the unicorn ranch and huffing pixie dust, Heilemann is really all about the President Bloomberg scenario. I don't get that at all.

Again, for the record, I like the woman and think she might someday be president. 2012? Not so sure. This is merely from a preference point of view, though, coming from the sentiment that I believe we need someone that the other side doesn't abjectly hate. This point of view is becoming more tempered, though, by the dawning realization that such preferences are the stuff of luxury and that we may not only never find someone the other side doesn't abjectly hate, but may not have the space of time to do so in the first place.

Trying to be as objective as possible about her public face, she certainly seems to be avoiding errors. The last one I can remember, if you want to call it an error at all, was the notes on the hand thing. That knuckleball over 1773 was hysterical. Ya got to grant her that, regardless of your ideological bent.

I admire Sarah Palin tremendously, but one president with a thin resume is enough in my book.

As for Bloomberg, he'd be a cinch to beat in any national election. Just stand up, face the TV camera, hold up a picture of the RINO, and say "this man wants to take away your right to a burger and fries."

After that Bloomberg would be lucky to get the votes of all the members of his family, much less the votes of anyone else.

Kev म्हणाले...

(the other kev)

Just out of curiosity, what is Bloomberg's base? Everything I've read seems to indicate that the attitude of New Yorkers to his time as mayor as been kind of a big 'meh.'
His politics don't resound with either the Republican or libertarian base, and I can't see Democrats voting for a guy who pounded their nominees twice. A third party candidate has to have some kind of reputation as someone who knows how to get things done, like Perot's getting his people out of Iran. Bloomberg's just the guy who wants cut salt from everyone's diet.

I liked Bloomberg at first- he was a reasonable successor to Giuliani. (I moved out of NYC in 95, but I follow along.) But he's an authoritarian technocrat, and I don't much care for that.

Getting rid of NYC mayor term limits so he could run again was a real power grab. Current office holders out to be grandfathered out when that kind of change is made. It was a rule-of-men banana republic move.

Ah...the voluminous wisdom that is Garage Snarkhal.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@ScottM, heck, if Ritmo gets on the thread we'll go over 300 with room to spare.

My own prediction is that 40% of the comments will be more or less of the form "I like Sarah Palin but not for president in 2012" (and I include people who think "not president ever").

30% will be of the form "oh, yeah, run her in 2012 you stupid poopy-heads, because our Barack will eat her for lunch."

Somewhere between zero and 5% will be from right-of-center commentators who are wildly happy with the thought that Sarah will be sworn in as President in January 2013.

10% will be comments trying to hijack the thread.

And the remainder will be of the form "Sarah who"?

Unknown म्हणाले...

Agree with Scott and Mike that she needs to build her resume. I really do think trying to try it now would only end in defeat for her.

It doesn't hurt to build toward the day, however, and being nice to Michael Bloomberg, who won't be mayor of Gotham forever, but will have tons of money after he leaves office, can't be a bad thing. Having many friends in the party never dimmed anyone's political chances and, as I've said, would be an easy way for her to begin the process of replacing Michael Steele. Besides, it drives HD up the wall.

PS Kudos on your perspicacity, Madame, although I must say, you looked as if you'd recently been crying in that video.

Ever since Mike went on to prove the doubters wrong by making a killing with the Bloomberg boxes, he thinks that he's right and everybody else is wrong. Trouble is that he had a revolutionary product then, but what he is selling now is something that expired 40 years ago - Rockefeller RINO Republicanism. But he won't be dissuaded, and he has the cash. I don't think there's much of a market for what he is selling, even in Manhattan.

Bob_R म्हणाले...

Two things have to happen for her to become president (in the most likely scenario). (1) She has to get the Republican nomination. (2) She has to be opposed by a Democrat that she can beat. While neither of those this is certain, they are both plausible.

If you are dividing up the probability pie for who is the most likely winner of the 2012 election the current resident gets the biggest slice (always). But Sarah is probably next. I hope one of the better candidates is left by the Virginia primary, but if she is running against Obama I'll pull Sarah's lever.

He's a nice man who seems to have inhaled the common wisdom that Palin is some kind of threat. Once the liberal line is set, it cannot be changed.

I don't see the threat. Leftists hate her because they see her as advocating some kinds of limits on abortion... and having adhered to her beliefs in her private life by not aborting a handicapped child.

Abortion has become the sacrament of the Democratic Party. That's why Palin had to be made to appear to be a demon.

A strange and sick moral inversion to be sure. Mark Steyn produces a picture (down the page) that sort of illustrates the sick left's view of sexuality:

http://www.steynonline.com/content/view/3536/128/

Abortion is probably inevitable and ought to be provided for in the extreme. Making killing babies into a sacrament, as the Democratic Party has done, is sick shit.

Demonizing Palin for this is even sicker shit.

People should be very wary of Bloomberg because he has now self financed 3 mayoral terms, thwarted the feeble will of New Yorkers the last time by going around term limits and with everything else swirling around the city is worried about and banning salt and transfats in restaurants.

But this little dictator will have two things going for him if he runs for president and that is 1, a perceived mount Olympus business acumen (to fix all of the fiscal destruction of Obama) from building Bloomberg News and 2, he can spend $1 Billion dollars of his OWN money for a campaign and still have $3 Billion dollars left in his bank account when all is said and done.

I count this guy as dangerous. He would give the term "nanny state" a brand new meaning and make Obama look like a piker in that regard.

That's my .01 cent, New York took the rest in taxes.

Note also that the poll indicates only 41% of Republicans and 23% of independentshave a favorable view of the Tea Party . This strikes me as laughably off base - how are the Republicans doing this well based on this?

Another hit and run, shallow post by the king of 'em.

I think the former gov. from Alaska will win the Republican nomination if she runs.

As for the presidency: This is up to Obama. If he stays to the left, anybody the Republicans nominate will beat him. If he tacks back to the center, like Clinton did, he will be tough to beat.

People do like divided govt. and I expect the Republicans to increase their majority in the house and become the majority in the senate--or increase it if they do well Tue after next.

My best friend is a university dean and not a flaming liberal. I was shocked and horrified when he said he voted for Obama because he could not bring himself to vote for Palin. If she stays where she is, the Tea Party has a better chance of keeping the Republicans in line, no matter who the president is.

It made people who really had no major problem with her kind of concerned and it took her from "governor" to "lady who writes stuff on facebook". But no one has explained how or why he became editor of the Review, though many have asked, which goes to my point. And as I understand it, it is a position that is supposed to be earned by some evidence of legal scholarship, even if only the lefty kind is admissible.

Fls,
For Nixon that would be 4 years as Congressman. In both Houses he did yeoman work as an ardent anti-communist crusader, which was a very big deal back then. Not work I particularly approved of, so I later voted against him when he ran as head of the ticket, but "Ironbutt" Nixon certainly had a resume.

Nixon was kind of an accidental Republican. When he got out of the Navy in -46 and considered entering politics, he rather thought to run as a Democrat, but it so happened that the Representative for his home district was a Democrat, and the local Republicans were looking for some presentable veteran with a snazzy picture in uniform to run against him.

Kind of makes you think of what might have been, doesn't it?

And he had earned the fame - or infamy - no one was neutral about "Tricky Dick" then, which you cannot say about any of the recent Democratic candidates for national office. Stevenson was more like the Jeb Bush (the competent Bush brother) of his day. Everybody in Arkansas must have known about "Slick Willie," and possibly some in the neighboring states, but nationally the Clintons had not been heard of, and the MSM certainly was not going to tell.

Adlai Stevenson had a quite impressive resume, was well respected, and had the suppoert of his party's "Establishment." Also he had the "egghead" label as well as "soft on communism," however unfair that might have been. That also were "interesting times."

Jeb certainly is a lot smoother than his brother, and they loved him in Florida, but I shudder to think of the Democrats' reaction if he were to run.

Not necessarily. These people are not trustworthy. They also knew that Joe McCarthy was an alcoholic, a falling down drunk, not too bright when he was sober, and no real danger to anyone but himself and his immediate surroundings. It was the media that egged him on, blew up his importance, and encouraged others around the country to emulate him. Then, when they got tired of the game, they did a "bootlegger 180" and turned on him and his followers.
And, of course, they had never had anything to do with the debacle, had always bravely resisted "McCarthyism," etc. etc., with little shiny halos supported with coathangers above their heads.

I have always remembered that, and would caution anyone to be careful about getting too far out from shore on the premise that the media will back you up and protect you.

On the whole, that's a great point, Ritmo. I disagree, however, with the degree of Palin's "disdain." I think she's been well advised, and she does consult as needed. She's been picking it up as she goes along, very much in the way Reagan did back in the '50's.

However, in the end, I think it comes down to the quality of the consultants, especially her chief consultant, Todd Palin.

And that's the elephant sitting in the corner. Todd Palin is turning out to be something of a political Svengali, someone we don't know much about.

She's got it made right now. She doesn't have to do much other than make personal appearances for generous cash fees and issue her banal tweets and public pronouncements, and her idolators swoon and gush and say how great she is. She doesn't have to really do anything or risk disillusioning her base by failing in office, (which would be inevitable), and she gets to keep raking in the green!
