We forgot to buy Bob Dylan tickets.

Damn. Didn't think about it until the evening of the day the tickets went on sale, and now they are sold out. I guess we aren't the biggest Bob Dylan fans in Madison, Wisconsin. Ha. Yeah. Madison, Wisconsin. I need to understand this place where I've lived for over a quarter century.

If you didn't get in line to buy them the day before they went on sale, then no you aren't.

Try going to meet the scalpers. Or just offer a ticket holder a deal he can't refuse.

I'm guessing rich old hippies snatched up all of the tickets.

Do you know that I have never bought a scalped ticket? It offends my sense of order. Plus, I'm very law abiding. I think my failure to buy a ticket in proper fashion establishes that I do not belong at the concert. Someone else does.

If Bob reads this and sends me 2 free tickets, however, I will attend, with my Dylanesque husband.

Stub Hub is a good suggestion. I've scalped tix, bought from scalpers, ticket brokers, etc. Stub Hub is the best venue I've found. Now, being a Cheesehead, maybe your too tight...I mean frugal, to pay a premium. If not, click onto Stub Hub and start rolling some doobies.

Have you ever heard of ticket scalpers? The best seats in the house are usually still for sale for the right price.

Your sense of order needs to expand to a include a free market. Problem solving is an instinct that may not always be Kosher, but it is an American skill...ask people from Oklahoma.

Sometimes it seems like you relate more to the bike paths than the folks who share them with you and Meade. Madison, from my experience, is a diverse group of folks who can enjoy many different kinds of grooves including nostalgic rides on route 66, as well as conservative view points, and I suspect someone who reads this blog will make a few tickets available:)

I believe Ms. Althouse is a cheapskate, tightwad, skinflint, penny pincher, shitty tipper, who looks for all you can eat specials. She's possibly one of those folks who clog up the farmer's market saying, "Meade...come here right now, there's some free cheese @ this stall."

There are few forms of carbon based life lower than cheapskates. But, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Right now, stubhub, ebay, and craigslist are all selling them for approximately $125 a ticket. (Not bad, really).

To me, that says "actual market value" rather than "the karmic wheel sez I am not meant to attend unless Dylan and the Universe ring me personally".

The promoters use the scalpers to make the marker. Many times tickets are sold way below value in the last hour before show time.

How come Dylan's not taking a stand against scalpers in Madison: linkage?

I have little problem with scalpers. They are charging correct market value. Many times in high school we would register with scalpers MONTHS in advance to get a ticket for a show that was only rumored, but we knew that if it came to pass we would get one.

The problem I had was while on intern level in the music industry in Los Angeles, where enormous amounts of tickets are reserved for Aging Industry Scum who don't really want them, my 'supervisor', the VP of Whatever in Whatever Conglomerate, would wave tickets before me then take them away. "Oh No, I thought of You, but I gave them to My Contact in Whatever Other Media Conglomerate from Whom I Need A Favor." Then the Contact wouldn't want them either, because she/he was too fucking old as well, and would toss them off to his/her assistants...who, of course, were my friends.

So I would end up getting them anyway but with Enormous Amounts of Bullshit to Wade Through.

Scalpers? Scalpers are Honest. Good for Them.

Not paying that. I wouldn't pay any more than the face value of a ticket.

Eh. There's only a chance of enjoying it in the amount equivalent to the money. The same is true of restaurant meals. Better to hold onto your money. I'd have bought at the box office, but failing that... I move on. It was meant to be. It's all only a crapshoot whether the night will be better doing that than doing whatever other thing we will don.

Ann,

Being a craps player for over 30 years, I can say life is a crapshoot. On the craps table there are a myriad of wagers. Some are real long shots that pay big. Other wagers have good odds, but pay only even money. Maybe you've never been in a casino. But, if you have, you know a craps table is where the knowledgeable gamblers are, and where you hear the most excitement.

Over the years I've had thousands of people stand over my shoulder, watching w/ intrique. I've encouraged many to play and I love the trepidation and joy on their face when they roll their first dice. I surmise you're one of the folks who sees the excitement but doesn't play because, "it offends my sense of order." Well Ann, this is a non linear world. Presumably, you invest your money as opposed to putting it in a mattress. There are investments w/ long odds and short, just like in craps, and just like in life.

Finally, "Better to hold onto your money." Agreed...one shouldn't be cavalier. But, to not allow yourself to enjoy something just because it costs a bit more says you don't really value yourself. It means the money controls you, rather than the way it's supposed to be...you control the money.
Italians are frugal, but they enjoy life and will spend freely on good food. Italians can also be untrusting. The great Rocky Marciano saw the thieves in boxing and trusted no one. He didn't even trust his wife. He kept all of his winning in cash and hid it where no one knew. Rocky died in a plane crash. That money has rotted.
