This moment. Bleh. Is he sending me the
lyrics from an "American Idol" finale song?
What if I told you
It was all meant to be
Would you believe me,
Would you agree
It's almost that feelin'
That we've met before
So tell me that you don't think I'm crazy
When I tell you love has come and now...
A moment like this...
Eh. Sorry, I don't believe you, Barack. The moment is over.
Ann --
When Michelle and I decided that I would run for President, it was because of a shared belief in the power of community and connection, a commitment to the idea that we are our brothers' keepers....
There are a lot of people out there who do not believe we can continue this work.
But we've defied the naysayers before. It was supporters like you who stood up and said...
Am I one of the people who are considered
the 8 million members of "Obama's Army" that seems to have melted back into the civilian population?

"There are a lot of people out there who do not believe we can continue this work."
...and those people are the ones who are expected to foot the bill for your "work".
"There are a lot of people out there who do not believe we can continue this work."
The corrected version of this statement replaces the word "can" with the word "should".
And those same people, through the next couple of election cycles, are going to ensure you can't "defy the naysayers" again.
I am a ranking member of the Obama/Biden Administration. I worked to get WI in their column. I expect to work for them in 2010 and 2012. Thus, it is impossible for GOP to win. I am their firewall.
A lot of people call the President "thin-skinned". Who knows? Despite public evidence that seems to support it (certainly debatable), I have no first-hand knowledge. In my humble opinion, though, a big enough landslide mid-term (the cats-and-dogs-living-together sort) would affect a truly thin-skinned person perhaps beyond regrouping. If that is the case, he may indeed forgo a bid for a second term.
Who's for a single six year term for president anyway (slightly off topic)?
Barry, have you ever considered the possibility that the naysayers are your keepers?
I don't understand why they think reminding people of how they were fooled two years ago will create a desire to repeat the mistake.
To start with no one should be uninformed about Mr. Obama now.
Otherwise it looks like they are grasping for anything that might work and looking forward they don't see anything to sell.
Of course maybe they can get people to buy Paul Krugman's "the economy would be better if we had an even bigger stimulus" angle.
"a commitment to the idea that we are our brothers' keepers...."
This is proving to be one hell of an expensive commitment.
It's time for Obama to STOP campaigning, and actually work. stop flying to Colorado for press conferences, we provide you with the most prestigious office so that you do not have to leave it.
Stop campaigning against the people you represent. In case you haven't figured it out, once you were elected you became the President of the United States, not the Democratic Party. You are supposed to represent all of us - equally - no favoritism - no agenda - no activist bullshit. You're supposed to husband the nation's prosperity and safety, not crush business but support and build it, not take away money from your citizens but make it possible for them to earn more and to succeed beyond their wildest dreams. Not bankrupt the country and with it all future generations...
Obama fails at every level.
His work is not over...there are still bank deposits and IRAs in the hands of a middle class Americans not under Obama's permission to exist, temporarily. Obama's gangster and thug express needs more fraudulent vote counts than ever before.
"a commitment to the idea that we are our brothers' keepers...."
Sound the lefty religious separation alarm: Obama is describing the federal government in the language of scripture - this from Genesis as the words Cain answered God.
But seriously, don't we all realize that the federal government is nothing more than our kindhearted, compassionate neighbor.
You all remember the scripture, don't you:
"But [the Pharisee], willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?"
"And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead."
"And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side."
"And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side."
"But a certain powerful and large federal government bureaucratic agency, as it cumbersomely operated, established a local office where he was: and when it had received all the required paperwork from the injured man, it determined that it had a program established under the guise of compassion to meet his needs,"
"And enrolled him, and gave him a multi-thousand page health care bill to console him, and set him on a government funded and fuel efficiency mandated carbon-free vehicle (built in China), and brought him to a government regulated private hospital, and paid a for-profit company to take care of him."
"And on the morrow when the federal government ran out of money, it took out two pence, and gave them to the host (even though the host had incurred over $50,000 in actual costs), and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, I will allow you to deduct up to 30% off your income taxes, provided that your other deductions don't total more than the allowed amount under section 26.002(a)(1)"
"Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?"
"Or better yet, which one of these players was by far the biggest thieve?"
Keep whistlin' AP. My vegan left-wing girlfriend thinks he's a fuckup. She just got her health insurance premium rate hike that I promised her she would get thanks to Obamacare even though she was sure I was wrong and she would get a rate cut because O said she would, and she is pissed.
Heh. He addresses you as Ann. Cardinal Sin #1.

I would just love to see the construction of your tinfoil hat. Please post photos.
Ann, if you had to vote tomorrow, would he still garner your support?
"Eh. Sorry, I don't believe you, Barack. The moment is over."
But you did, right? Another rube self identifies?
For shame! A Law Prof. voting for an ineligible Non Natural Born Citizen. You remember posting the evidence of the Framer's idea of what a Natural Born Citizen is, right? Federalist #68 (Alexander Hamilton).
"Nothing was more to be desired than that every practicable obstacle should be opposed to cabal, intrigue, and corruption. These most deadly adversaries of republican government might naturally have been expected to make their approaches from more than one querter, but chiefly from the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils. How could they better gratify this, than by raising a creature of their own to the chief magistracy of the Union?"
HMMM, a "creature of their own" sounds the same as "indigene" (indigenous) from Law of Nations, or "one born WITHIN a Nation's Territory and Allegiance", from Laurence Tribe.
When Michelle and I decided that I would run for President, it was because of a shared belief in the power of community and connection, a commitment to the idea that we are our brothers' keepers....
And who appointed them? I mean, really?
News flash: We don't need none of your kind of keepin', sir.
And we don't want it.
YOUR JOB: Read the US Constitution and find out (the wiki version will do if you don't have a copy around) that community, connection and brothers' keeper isn't in your job description.
Your #1 job is to lead the defense of us against all enemies foreign and domestic. Not BE the number one domestic enemy.
I think it safe to say we've had some lousy presidents over the past couple centuries, but no one has ever behaved as incompetently as this.
He will not run again because his heart is not in it. He wanted the position of power to organize the workers of the United States of America without ever comprehending that we are a community who choose to organize and disorganize on our own terms in our own time with an aversion to banana republic political types and hypes.
Sarah Palin was right when she questioned what a "community organizer" was and why.
Not to mention he doesn't play well with others.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Actually, I feel embarassed I was fooled the first time. C'est la vie.

Ann, if you had to vote tomorrow, would he still garner your support?
Is he still running against John McCain, and has the economy been faltering for 2+ more years under Bush II?
You betcha.
Hey President Erkle, what if we are tired of footing the bill to continuously be our brothers keepers while you keep proposing new outlandish ways to remain a slave to him at our expense? You certainly aren't the shining example of taking care of any of your brothers, biologically or ethnically. Your foolish ideology is your undoing and you will cling to it bitterly.

I knew that you felt it too,

I meet and talk with many middleclass folks. The "we are not sure about Obama" answers have recently been replaced by "We know Obama is is deliberately destroying us" answers. Add to that mix a feisty leader that does not agree to half of what Obama wants done to us, but opposes him all the way, and that person will win the Next election going away.
Is he still running against John McCain, and has the economy been faltering for 2+ more years under Bush II?
You betcha.
Seriously, MM? Are you of the view that -- well, what exactly? And what has Bush to do with anything?
The email gives me the impression Obama has lost his enthusiasm. It feels forced- like he's going thru the motions. Has he actually lost interest in being president? Maybe it's too hard-Obama has never really worked hard in his life IMO.
and has the economy been faltering for 2+ more years under Bush II?
Wacky coincidence how those two years happened to be the 2 after the Dems took control of Congress.
It's almost like Congress is the branch of Government that actually spends all the money. But that must be some other country I'm thinking of.
"There are a lot of people out there who do not believe we can continue this work."
Obama's getting famous for leveling these charges at "a lot of people out there," and that poor straw man had the stuffing knocked out of him long ago.
Am I the only one who wants to grab the President by the lapels and shout WHO!? WHO!? NAME NAMES or SHADDUP!
A moment like this...Eh. Sorry, I don't believe you, Barack. The moment is over.
You don't bring me flowers
You don't sing me love songs
You hardly talk to me anymore
When I come through the door
At the end of the day
Has he actually lost interest in being president?
There have been a number of public speculations to that effect. He's like the dog who finally caught the car, and now he doesn't know what to do with it. (Uh-oh . . . I talked about him like a dog.)
But he'll be the happiest ex-president ever. All the perks and none of the responsibilities!
Am I one of the people who are considered the 8 million members of "Obama's Army" that seems to have melted back into the civilian population?
If you're on that mailing list, the answer's "yes". That was part of their 8 million count.
"Barry And The Anti-Americans" made me laugh.
Yup, Ann, feel free to take your vote elsewhere. The next set of easy answers lie in the Republican party. Of course, each set of easy answers ultimately leads to disillusionment because, gosh darn it, not everything works out exactly like we'd like or as fast as we'd like, or... Sadly, these are those pesky and illusive independent voters, the swing voters; and I guess we're all just stuck swinging as they swing.

I've said clearly before a year and a half ago that he is completely uninterested in being president, but rather wants the trappings that being president conveys to him. Once he realized the national fights he was going to be engaged in, while trying to bring it down to a personal level (because that's the kind of petty and bitter schmuck he really is), he lost his nerve and doesn't have the stomach for national politics.
He's clearly not interested in being president at all. He fades out in press conferences which leads one to believe why he has so little of them. He just wants the perks, fuck everything else.
Go Get em, Fido.
Maybe it's momentous.
It the damn naysayers every time.
The horsey set.
Neighhhhhhh!
Do you suppose Obama actually sees the email before it goes out?
Damn, I hope not.
He's probably out for a smoke anyway.
MEMO TO MM AND BARACK H. OBAMA !!!
GEORGE BUSH HAS NOT BEEN PRESIDENT FOR ALMOST TWO FULL YEARS!!!!!!!!
I AM NOT THE ONLY VOTER TO NOTICE.
During the rein of BO, he started in a ditch, and just kept digging.
Wasn't "Am I my brothers Keeper?" the same argument Wesley Snipes used in New Jack City as he took over his neighborhood as a crack dealer?
First he channels Bob The Builder, and now Wesley Snipes. Oh brother.
If Obama really thinks he is his brother's keeper, he has some relatives in Kenya who need some help.

Yeah, but if you remember in NJC, sniped killed his brother.
...melted back into the civilian population?
I believe the phrase is crawled back into the woodwork.
Are you of the view that -- well, what exactly? And what has Bush to do with anything?
The question was ill-posed. Are we voting for Obama in the original race, (in which case Bush is still President) but changing the economic parameters? Are we voting for him now? (Who is running against him?)
Once he realized the national fights he was going to be engaged in, while trying to bring it down to a personal level (because that's the kind of petty and bitter schmuck he really is), he lost his nerve and doesn't have the stomach for national politics.
I think he actually bought into the national (irrational) exhuberance over him being President that he figured he could just imitate Yul Brennar as the Pharoah and just recite: So let it be written, so let it be done and he'd be on the links by 9am at the latest.
What he doesn't understand, is people really really really really really...really don't like change. They really don't. When was the last time your boss said: There's gonna be some changes around here! and everyone jumped up and squealed GOODY!
Yeah that's what I thought.
People want stability, they want a smooth ride, no big bumps, no turbulence, big waves, well you get the idea. The electorate mistook Change to really mean, we're going to go back to the good old days of 5% unemployment and a lobster in every pot.
Obama read it as, hey, these morons really want CHANGE and I'm just the guy to give it too them! And so he did. Real good and now the morons are saying, hey, that's not what we meant and Obama is now wondering what they meant but no one at Martha's Vineyard or the caddie at the 15th Par 5 could tell him what it is.
So he's about to find out that those rubes who were applauding his every word (or sneeze) are now realizing the depths of their error and are readying to fix it.
Needless to say I don't see Obama building homes for the poor later on.
MM
"The question was ill-posed. Are we voting for Obama in the original race, (in which case Bush is still President) but changing the economic parameters? Are we voting for him now? (Who is running against him?)"
We're voting for people who can stop him from doing more of what he's been doing.
We hope.
Will it work?
It'll be a miracle.
Btw "brother's keeper" is from the Bible which proves Obama is a Christian. Heh. [Now I must figure a way to inject Palin into this thread too!]

I blame golf. The poor man is frustrated by hitting his health care bill out of bounds and his Global Warming Hoax shot into cooling weather water hazard and finally his Wipe Out Israel shot buried in a sand trap. He needs a new middle of the road swing.
Obama also promised to "go over the budget line by line" so there would be no increase in spending. But some of us knew that community organizers don't do spending cuts very well.
And he also said he would change the tone in Washington but instead we got "I won".

Who wants a *keeper*? I don't. I don't want to be *kept* and I don't want to *keep* someone.
If that is Obama's agenda - I don't want it. I suspect a majority of Americans don't want it either. It's one thing to help others - a hand up rather than a hand out. But being a keeper? or being kept? There is something tyrannically involuntary about it.

I think that since most people figured out BO's a Muslim, they've turned against him. Oops, there goes his 8 million!
Someone sent me this from a chatroom that says why Obama can't be a good American, because he's also a Muslim:
Can Obama be a good American and Also a Muslim???????*
*Theologically – no*. . . . Because his allegiance is to Allah, The moon
god of Arabia .
*Religiously – no*. . . Because no other religion is accepted by His Allah except Islam (Quran, 2:256)(Koran)
*Scripturally – no*. . . Because his allegiance is to the five Pillars of Islam and the Quran
*Geographically – no* . Because his allegiance is to Mecca , to which
he turns in prayer five times a day.
*Socially – no*. . . Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to
make friends with Christians or Jews.
*Politically – no*. . Because they *must submit* to the mullahs
(spiritual Leaders), who teach annihilation of Israel and destruction of
America , the great Satan.
*Domestically – no*. .. . Because he is instructed to marry four Women
and beat and scourge his wife when she disobeys him (Quran 4:34 )
*Intellectually – no*. . Because he cannot accept the American
Constitution since it is based on Biblical principles and he believes
the Bible to be corrupt.
*Philosophically – no*. . . . Because Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran
does not allow freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam
cannot co-exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic.
*Spiritually – no.* . . Because when we declare ‘one nation under GOD,’
The Christian’s GOD is loving and kind, while Allah is *NEVER* referred
to as heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in the Quran’s 99 excellent names.
NB: At any rate, I thought it was good for laughs. Where's Obama hiding his other three wives?

Yes, and Obama did nothing for his brother, did he?
Giving and helping others is beautiful. But the idea of *being kept* by force - or being *a keeper* by force is ugly. And then there's the whole issue of top-down, one-size-fits-all programs that government comes up with. We are individuals. We are unigue. One-size doens't fit all.
The further left one slides with any given policy, the more coercion is required to get people to do want you want.

I think I might be one of the 8 million. I used to get regular e-mails from the Astroturfer General himself, David Axelrod, but I haven't received one in quite some time. I suspect it's because at one point I got so angered by the Astroturf Czar's e-mails, that I replied with much invective.
One of the few ways conservatives and libertarians could manage to fuck up 2010 and 2012 is to do something to be seen as racist.
With that thought in mind, you should consider dropping "jive turkey" given the unavoidable racist element.
Obama is more like this;
Doctor Utopia.
Everything old is new again. OR...when will we ever learn from history.
Actually - the further right you slide - the more theocratic you get. They don't call them the *religious right* for nothing.
I know that stereotyping is fun and handy, and, indeed, essential to survival. But this is an improper generalization for a number of reasons.
First, as should be obvious, many on the right are not religious conservatives. There is a reason that religion is mentioned in the 1st Amdt., and not, say, in the 76th Amdt., and that is because freedom of religion is one of our most basic freedoms. And that means freedom from government intervention in our practice of whichever religion we believe in.
I would never consider myself a religious conservative, but still am conservative, but of a more libertarian strain. And, no surprise, the Tea Party movement is not directed towards religious tolerance or intolerance, but rather, economics and freedom from the government.
I would suggest that the average conservative would likely be no happier with a theocracy than the average liberal, and, indeed, given the loss of freedom that a theocracy would entail, maybe even less enthusiastic than a typical liberal who does believe in government intervention.
Keep in mind that much of the political motivations of the religious right revolve around what they see as government intrusion into their lives and the lives of their families, esp. through legalization and funding of abortion, which is still considered murder by a large percentage of the population.
Bruce -- They hate religious conservatives. I hate communist leftists.
We are even.

Luckily though this is well known tactic of the left, as evidenced by all those Journolist posts, and so will not be taken nearly as seriously in the future, as compared to the past, before it was so over-used attempting to block criticism of President Obama, Congress, and their hard left extremist agenda.

I, on the other hand, can tolerate either, as long as they don't enough political power to impose their views on me. Unfortunately, at least until the new Congress is seated in January, the communist leftists have way too much power politically, and so are much higher on my s**T list.

We tried to warn you, those who voted for Obama. You wouldn't listen. Now you have buyer's remorse. Unfortunately, your bad decisions have totally fucked up the rest of us and our country for a very long time if not forever.
I do not forgive you.
Actually - the further right you slide - the more theocratic you get. They don't call them the *religious right* for nothing.
@sunsong:
That's bullshit if the purest ray serene. Most of the religious right are only conservative in areas regarding religion and their practice thereof. The rest of it they tend to be meh about. Mike Huckabee is a great example of this. Totally on board with the religious issues, but a complete squish and moderate on fiscal, economic and national defense. He is not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination.
I consider myself very much to the right. Conservative/libertarian. I'm an atheist. Nothing in my political views is informed by religion, in as much as I tend to see religion overall as inimical to liberty, especially in the case of Muslims. Less so with Christians and even less so with Jews. The rest out there are insignificant as regards to politics.
Get it through your skull that the "religious right" is an artificial construct that has no real basis in reality. There is some overlap, but there is overlap on the left, too.
And also...well...
Now you have a man, you see.
I do think that matters, certainly not just for you - witness young, single women going for Barack over married women. Even married women who voted for him were less into him. And I don't think it's just that married women see different policy choices in their best interest, I think there's a real projection issue involved. You just have more emotional time to feel a popular mass media figure.
Of course Andrew Sullivan was already married and kind of ruins my theory.
I won't mention him then. ;-)

It is absurd to deny the tendency of theocratic tyranny on the far right. Such figures as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Alan Keyes, Gary Bauer, Mike Huckabee, Tony Perkins etc, were not about less and less government to the point of no government. They’re about using government to control society. The same thing the far left does. The extremes are more similar to each other than to the rest of us, imo.
George W. Bush did NOT reduce the size and scope of government, he expanded it – but he did try to ban gay marriage and went to a creepy extreme in the Terri Schiavo debacle, bringing Randall Terry out of the woodwork. The far right is intent on controlling society based on their religion.
It is rich to hear you all warn of stereotyping. If you are honest with yourselves you’ll realize you do it all the time.
I lean more to this interpretation:
Those on the Left seek social justice through redistributive social and economic intervention by the state. Those on the Right defend private property and capitalism. But the nature of the conflict depends on existing social and political cleavages and on the level of economic development.[8] Left-wing values include the belief in the power of human reason to achieve progress for the benefit of the human race, secularism, sovereignty exercised through the legislature, mistrust of strong personal political leadership, and social justice. To the Right, this is seen as anti-clericalism, unrealistic social reform, doctrinaire socialism and class hatred. The Right are skeptical about the capacity of radical reforms to achieve human well-being, which they see as harmful to personal liberties. They believe in the established church both in itself and as an instrument of social cohesion, and believe in the need for strong political leadership to minimize social and political divisions. To the Left, this is seen as a selfish and reactionary opposition to social justice, a wish to impose doctrinaire religion on the population, and a tendency to authoritarianism and repression.[9] The differences between left and right have altered over time. The initial cleavage at the time of the French Revolution was between supporters of absolute monarchy (the Right) and those who wished to limit the king's authority (the Left). During the 19th century the cleavage was between monarchists and republicans. Following the establishment of the Third Republic in 1871, the cleavage was between supporters of a strong executive on the Right and supporters of the primacy of the legislature on the Left.[10]
The contemporary Left in the United States is usually understood as a category including New Deal liberals, Rawlsian liberals, social democrats and civil libertarians, and is generally identified with the Democratic Party. In general, left implies a commitment to egalitarianism, support for social policies that favor the working class, and multiculturalism. The contemporary Left usually defines itself as promoting government regulation of business, commerce and industry; protection of fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and separation of church and state; and government intervention on behalf of racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities and the working class.
The contemporary Right in the United States is usually understood as a category including social conservatives, Christian conservatives and free market liberals, and is generally identified with the Republican Party. In general, right-wing implies a commitment to conservative Christian values, support for a free-market system, and traditional family values. The contemporary Right usually defines itself as promoting deregulation of banking, commerce, and industry.

Chef Mojo,
Hey, the violence guy. Do you still say that violence is the answer?
Hey, the violence guy. Do you still say that violence is the answer?
For fucks sake. Shut up.
Also GW Bush is not a Conservative either.
Sunsong: I lean more to this interpretation:...
Putting aside for a moment the ridiculous bias of the wiki section you cited..
The problem is that you seem to be willing to enable monsters on the Left because you believe there are greater monsters on the Right.
This is a common mental defect of the Left. For instance, in a discussion about obvious examples of tyranny from the Left, your first response is not to disavow them, but to blame the Right for "being just as bad".
sunsong wrote I lean more to this interpretation
Yada yada.
Well of course you do. Your Wiki article reads just like Dennis Hopper's lines in Apocalypse Now:
Dialectic logic is there's only love and hate, you either love somebody or you hate them.
It is absurd to deny the tendency of theocratic tyranny on the far right. Such figures as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Alan Keyes, Gary Bauer, Mike Huckabee, Tony Perkins etc, were not about less and less government to the point of no government.
I had to think a bit to remember who all these guys were. Keyes, I think, was the guy whom Obama beat for the Senate seat way back when. Not sure if Falwell or Robertson are still alive. And this is part of the reason that Huckleberry isn't going to get the nomination (he also doesn't have good fiscal conservatism credentials).
So, the reality is that your list is sooo old and out of date. The only one who has any real power these days of Tea Partiers is maybe Huckleberry, and that is because he has a show on Fox.
Keep at it though. I know that you enjoy trying to resurrect the heyday of modern liberalism, when George W. Bush was President, and liberals could feel self-righteous for their opposition to the Bush Administration, instead of self-loathing for voting for the people who greatly increased the unemployment rate while benefiting their best interests.
Sunsong is shallow. There's really nothing more that needs to be said.
Do you still say that violence is the answer?
If I thought that beating you to within an inch of your life would make you any smarter, I'd be willing to give it a go.
However, since it won't and stupid is all the way to the bone in your case, there would be no point.
Ha Ha. Ann got drafted into the "army". Economic cannon fodder - that's what we are to him.
sunsong drifting precariously close to Kenyan anti-colonialism.
His campaign slogan had the word change in it, and he is doing pretty much exactly what he campaigned on. Imagine that!
Yes garage and funny how his popularity is going down the shit tubes and your party is looking like its going to be handing the keys to the House back to the GOP. I mean imagine that!
Why is that garage? Did the folks really want change or were they just enamored over the prospect of this really hip black dude who talked about change but maybe everyone was so ga ga over his dreamy rhetoric they didn't really pay attention.
I mean you yourself called him on his bullshit before he sent Senator Cankles packing and being the true Democrat hack that you are, you hopped on the CHANGE!! bus along with the rest of the dipshits who pulled the lever for him.
Congratulations. Now you know how fickle the electorate is.
Do you still say that violence is the answer?
My sophmore year in high school this junior on the wrestling team used to pick on me almost every day. A shove here, takedown there then one day he shoved me against a locker so I hauled off and popped him square in the nose and then followed up with a solid jab right in his mouth. I got a two day suspension but he never bothered me again.
So yes, violence was the answer for me.

I'm not in my usual haunts. It's very intersting here, more Baptists. Now my hook-nose scares them, BUT they are such rubes and fall so easily for my wily tricks...
Any way, unsong isn't ENTIRELY wrong. The Religious Right IS about more government control. I think you'd discover that a Moral Majority Governmnet would be LESS intrusive than an Obama Administration, but it would intrude on your social lives.
Libertarianism isn't on the Left/Right continuum. If the Left is concerned with EQUALITY the Libertarian impulse is more towards LIBERTY and the Right more about EFFICIENCY.
It's a more triangular relationship. I tend to be closer to the RIGHT and UP, towards libertarian conservatism....others may end towards a more conventional right PoV.
Oh quit being so abstruse garage.
Those on the Left seek social justice ...
Ah, but what do you mean by "social justice"? To me, social justice cannot be very just unless it means that people who work hard should have more than people of comparable skills who don't work as hard. To me it also means that people who are wise stewards of their money deserve to have more of it than people who take spend their money foolishly. To me it means that people who study hard in school and take difficult classes should make more money than people who are disruptive in class for K-12 education and/or take gut courses in college (e.g., any class ending in the word "studies"). I could go on and on in this vein, but I think most commentators on this thread would agree with me, even if your definition is wildly at variance with mine.
Left-wing values include the belief in the power of human reason to achieve progress for the benefit of the human race, secularism, sovereignty exercised through the legislature, mistrust of strong personal political leadership, and social justice. To the Right, this is seen as anti-clericalism, unrealistic social reform, doctrinaire socialism and class hatred. The Right are skeptical about the capacity of radical reforms to achieve human well-being, which they see as harmful to personal liberties.
The business of "mistrust of strong personal political leadership" is clearly misplaced. Most of us are skeptical of charismatic politicians, for good and sufficient reason, but most people on the right -- and more than a few moderates -- had a great of respect for the strong leadership of Ronald Reagan, to name names.
Meanwhile let me ask you what you think "progress" is? Because when you scratch the surface of what the Left of the 21st century is pushing, you get concepts that have been pushed since the 1930's and which, wherever tried in the real world, have failed miserably. "Progress" ought not to be in a retrograde direction.
You keep coming back to the church, the church, the church. The religious right has had its day, and that day is fading out. It gave to us Republican politicians who mouthed speeches about overturning Roe v. Wade (which, thankfully, isn't going to happen and which they did nothing to advance anyway) and who were rabidly anti-homosexuality (though more than a few turn out to be homosexual themselves -- go figure), but who spent money like drunken Democrats. I'm a member of the Right, yet I am an atheist. Do you plan to recalibrate your foolish screed?
(the Crypto Jew)
Big Mike,
I'd disagree...many of us on the Right want BOTH an end to the spending AND Abortion, don't fool yourself.
Sure, for the first few months/years repeal ObamaCare and roll government spending backm=, by all means.
HOWEVER, the murder of 1 million to 1.5 million innocents a year will HAVE to be addressed. And Anti-Gay is lib/libterian speak for no gay marriage...that ain't anti-gay...in fact it generally prospers wherever put on the ballot.
Sorry about the multiple posts. Don't know whether the problem was in Blogger or in Mozilla.
If I thought that beating you to within an inch of your life would make you any smarter, I'd be willing to give it a go.
I don't doubt it! Smart, by your definition means cruelty, right? Might makes right. Saddam was the smartest guy in Iraq?
MadMan,
That's an uncharacteristically unresponsive response from you.
Isn't the subject here, in large part, "We were fooled"? Given that, of course it's reasonable to consider a different choice if you had to do it over again.
sunsong,
"Such figures as ... Mike Huckabee... were not about less and less government to the point of no government."
You're right about Huckabee's positions, which is anyone with a clue realizes he's not part of any "right", much less the "far right".
Chef Mojo,
Hey, the violence guy. Do you still say that violence is the answer?
Yep! Sure do.
As a matter of fact, the other night, I had to threaten to inflict violence on a homeless man who was sexually assaulting a homeless woman out behind my establishment.
I think he was persuaded by the 16 inch long butchering scimitar I had in my hand.
So, sunsong, what should I have done? Tried to talk peace, love and understanding with a man who was slapping and throttling a woman in preparation - I presume - of raping her? Or threatening to run him through with with a butchering scimitar?
I assure you, the answer is obvious, and the threat was real. I would have run him through had he not fled, later to be caught by the police, who, I might add, took their damn sweet time getting there.
So, yeah, sunsong. Violence is the answer.
Now go fuck yourself.
Any way, sunsong isn't ENTIRELY wrong. The Religious Right IS about more government control. I think you'd discover that a Moral Majority Governmnet would be LESS intrusive than an Obama Administration, but it would intrude on your social lives.
Well Joe, it is nice to see there is someone who is honest about this.
I prefer the government that governs least - and neither the far left nor the far right embody that. Each has an agenda for society that they want to use government to establish. Neither one values the idea of live and let live , imo.
Hoosier,
Just a fluke with the wrestler, I'm sure; same for that Hitler guy.
I don't doubt it! Smart, by your definition means cruelty, right? Might makes right
Told ya. Useless waste of time to try to educate sunsong. He/she/it gives vapid a whole new dimension.
Chef Mojo,
So, yeah, sunsong. Violence is the answer.
Now go fuck yourself.
No, it's not. But it is the far right's dictum - it seems to me. Kill or be killed. What a horrible world you must live in. I am sorry for you.
To help someone who is being attacked is a good thing, however, so, if true, I think it was good of you to stop a possible rape. However, running him through with with a butchering scimitar is not the only possible solution.
This is a common mental defect of the Left. For instance, in a discussion about obvious examples of tyranny from the Left, your first response is not to disavow them, but to blame the Right for "being just as bad".
Fen,
You are not making sense. My post post on this thread at 3:32:
>>>Who wants a *keeper*? I don't. I don't want to be *kept* and I don't want to *keep* someone.
If that is Obama's agenda - I don't want it. I suspect a majority of Americans don't want it either. It's one thing to help others - a hand up rather than a hand out. But being a keeper? or being kept? There is something tyrannically involuntary about it.
Does the man have no respect for *the people*?<<<
@sunson:
And what a wonderful rainbow filled fantasy world you live in. Do me a favor. Stay there. You'll only get in the way.
To help someone who is being attacked is a good thing, however, so, if true, I think it was good of you to stop a possible rape. However, running him through with with a butchering scimitar is not the only possible solution.
You little toad-brained emo fuck, you have no idea what went down in this situation, and you are in no position to pass judgement on me or my actions. Bottom line: What I did worked. Violence, the threat thereof, worked. I had only one thing in mind and that was the safety of that woman.
Here's another thing, hotshot: Just because I threaten violence and am willing to use it does not mean I WANT to inflict violence. I've been all over this world, and it is indeed a horrible world overall. It is a world where violence is the rule and peace is the rare exception.
Your emo brand of kumbaya bullshit would have meant, even assured, that woman would have continued to be assaulted.
Piss off. You're pathetic.
What has Obama done for his half-brother George, who was living in abject poverty the last time I read about him?
Yes garage and funny how his popularity is going down the shit tubes and your party is looking like its going to be handing the keys to the House back to the GOP. I mean imagine that!
His approval ratings have barely budged in a year, right around Reagan's approval ratings for the same time in office. I know it sounds so pleasing to hear his popularity is plummeting, but it isn't. Do you have any national politicians that have as high approval ratings? Not Palin. Not anyone in Congress. As for the House, big deal. What are they "winning"?
@sunsong:
Pathetic creatures like you own the ethnic cleansers of the Balkins and the Rwandan genocide. You own Darfur.
Peace and love, my ass.
Chef Mojo,
Your post is a sad commentary of who you think you are and what your life is about.
it is indeed a horrible world overall.
That is, indeed, what your words seem to say that you believe. I do feel sorry for you. Your hatred of someone who sees things differently only hurts you.
The far right seems to really hate others. That's sad.
Violence is not the answer. Love may not be *the* answer - but it is always at least a part of the answer.
"His campaign slogan had the word change in it, and he is doing pretty much exactly what he campaigned on. Imagine that!"

Ann, if you had to vote tomorrow, would he still garner your support?
Is he still running against John McCain, and has the economy been faltering for 2+ more years under Bush II?
You betcha.
======================
The problem with McCain was the same with John Kerry. An absolutely dismal, incoherent candidate up against someone that in a normal election had no business being in office (An already visibly failing, bungling Bush -- and the inknown Obama)
Had the Dems run just about anybody but Kerry, Dubya would have been the 1-term President he deserved to be.
Had Repubs run Romney, he'd be President. But voters went to the booth convinced that McCain was guaranteed to be an awful President, while Obama, would be a roll of the dice - possibly far better than McCain, possibly far worse.
And many moderate Republicans knew that if McCain was elected, he'd do a ton of Democrat desired things while giving the Dems full cover as "bipartisan" as the treacherous McCain did time and time again. But if Obama was elected and failed, the Dems would lack McCain's cover and be swept from power pretty fast.
That is why there is almost zero "McCain regret" - even from people that hate Obama - because everyone believes McCain was not just dismal, but rarin' to get us in a 3rd major war, was going to do an Amnesty, close Gitmo, had a plan to give 500 billion gratis to people that "bought too much house". And McCain would have been primed for basking in NYTimes glory as he and Pelosi and his "good friend" Harry Reid and "great pal" Joe Lieberman raised hands in triumph at signing ceremony after ceremony.
As for the Great Goddess, Palin, being the "real President" behind the scenes...no. By he end of the campaign, she was loathed by McCain and the McCain stalwarts as much as Kerry and his people grew to loathe John Edwards.
Had McCain been elected, Palin would have been off attending funerals for the Deputy PM of Ecuador and tossing out red meat lines to crowds of wealthy red state rubes at catfish dinner fundraisers.
However, running him through with with a butchering scimitar is not the only possible solution.
You become a self parody. Word play, there were other solutions available, granted, but none AT THAT TIME!
When confronted with violence, in the immediate sense, it is foolish and immoral, in the extreme, to look for "other options."
Obama is his brother's keeper? Then why does his brother live in a hut in Kenya? Why are the people in Kenya still waiting for him to help them rebuild some school or other? Just words! Just speeches!
However, running him through with with a butchering scimitar is not the only possible solution.
Very true. An automatic weapon would have been better.
(the Crypto Jew)
Why does his "aunt" live in Section 8 Housing?
"My Brother's Keeper" becomes, YOU pay for MY brother, not me...
BTW, as a "jew" I might ahve a bit of insight, as Brother's Keeper is Torah.
Cain asked it of G*d rhetorically...G*d knew what ahd become of Abel, He's G*D!....
G*d was giving Cain the chance to come clean to confess, to make right with G*d.
Cain was attempting to evade the guilt and confession.
My Brother's Keeper means not that much....
As to the New Testament, please note the Samaritan SPENT HIS OWN MONEY. He didn't organize the community or seek a government grant...HE ACTED.
My Brother's Keeper is a slippery little term...
DBQ, the automatic weapon option is really sub-optimal...for cost and collateral damge reasons.
As for the House, big deal. What are they "winning"?
Nothing. Not a thing garage. Everything will be just butterflies and daffodils and Obama will just keep shitting out Tiffany cufflinks and everything will be wonderful.
the automatic weapon option is really sub-optimal...
Go semi-automatic. 3 round bursts.
And remember, you have time - one well-aimed shot is worth more than three sprayed.
wv: parlerym - the room where Obama will surrender the MiddleEast to a nuclear Iran.
I'll say it again.
I voted for Obama in 2008.
I donated money, first to Clinton and then to him.
On this November 2nd, I am going to vote for every Republican on the ballot and not for any Democrat.
Obama's continued class warfare, re-distributionist, statist rhetoric is only making me more determined--if that is possible-- to vote Republican.
Now Garage moves into self-parody..2006 Pelosi Speaker, REPUBLICANS ROUTED AND REJECTED.
2010 Democrats not in power...*YAWN*...sure, whatever Garage...do you believe these stories yourself?

You see folks, how Gargle McDouche thinks? He compares the lowered popularity of a shill of a president who is seeking to plummet this country into the mediocrity of a global malaise against a past president who under different circumstances sought to elevate this country above the mediocrity of a past global malaise and to celebrate its exceptionalism. Instead our resident snarkbag, tries to make a moral equivalence in terms of their popularity when both of their circumstances were under completely different conditions by totally ignoring the context under which those popularity numbers were derived.
The rest of moronic mediocre thinking from a moronic mediocre mind. Garage, why you even bother to touch a keyboard to give us your surface fluffed insight is a mystery, other than you are trying to usurp the throne of banality from the other gasbag, Schtickmo. It isn't about having a hatred for someone who sees things differently, but rather its having a hatred about the context and content of what you see differently. You see, all you've done is highlight that you see things differently and that's great, but what is that you perceive as a world view dovetail with realities on the ground. That is what you are being questioned on and your own vapidity fails to grasp that very nature of the questions being asked of you. All you can do is demure a retort about violence not being and answer, might making right, love and peace and whatever other nonsensical platitudes that you basically have within the copy and paste list you've amassed after a fashion.
You aren't even a real thinker, you just blurt out, like vomit, some kind of platitude that you think will change the mind of those engaging with in some kind of substantive dialogue. Shit, you might even have a future as a protest sign writer for a local professional protesters job shop because you are barely good enough at sloganeering.
Garage...do you believe these stories yourself?
Why not? They always have a happy ending for him.
And then Obama the Powerful stood between Bohener the Terrible and Princess Pelosi who clung to his thigh with one hand and covered her eyes with the other. Obama gazed and with his booming voice commanded: YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! and with one swift stroke from his 9 iron (+25 to Hit) pummeled the Dark Lord of the GOP down the steps of the Halls of Guild Bailouts and Health Care Reform (Bohener failed his saving throw despite a +5 modifier) thus saving the throne for Princess Pelosi.
And everyone lived happily ever after with free health care, a pony and a rocket ship.
The End.

Hoosier, I see one flaw in your atory...Michelle is NEVER going allow some white womon to cling to Barak's thigh. Simply NOT going to happen.
My roommates (both liberals) called me out of my room the other day to "talk". I was expecting a discussion of the dishwasher, or trash responsibilities, but, instead, they asked me if I'd seen Barry's speech and wanted to know what I thought of it (!) something they've never cared to ask before, knowing I'm a conservative (they always assume they know my views: I listen to Rush - AKA "Your God" - right?)
Anyway, the more liberal of the two starts talking, and then, all of a sudden, looks like he's going to cry as he says, "I don't get it: Obama's sounding like a loser!" This turned into a discussion of the typical liberal variety - declarations of honesty and fairness leading to what are now historical facts being described as merely my feelings, changing the subject, misinformation, Sarah Palin jokes, "Barney Frank is an economic genius", etc. - even after I went to YouTube for video back-up. I decided they're hopeless and lost interest after that, going back in my room more frustrated than when I came out.
Nothing less than complete political destruction will wake them up.
Make it so.
Hoosier, I see one flaw in your atory...Michelle is NEVER going allow some white womon to cling to Barak's thigh. Simply NOT going to happen.
Hey, this is fairy tale stuff, you know, suspension of disbelief? How do you think garage and the rest of the liberals can still go to bat for this guy every day?
I mean if this were a story ripped from the headlines, well, that just doesn't make the childrens happy.
@sunsong, I have to be up early so I'm calling it a night.
I got tired of waiting for you to define "social justice" and even "progress."
Yes, Garage--you console yourself with the thought that I am a moby. Watch out for 75 million other mobys on November 2nd.
Big Mike,
I got tired of waiting for you to define "social justice" and even "progress."
LOL - why on earth did you think I found your request interesting? There is an unconsciousness with a number of you - you think stereotyping is terrible unless it is you doing it. Hope you sleep well.
Sunsong, you're admitting you CAN'T define your terms, then...when you resort to airy dismissals, you're pretty much screwed.
methadras,
Actually I don't think you could understand much more than platitudes. When one is so far down in the sewer that the idea of killing and hating and blowing people to smitherenes is not just a day in the life - but encouraged - I don't think ideas like peace, love, understanding, forgiveness and the like mean much.
better, imo, is to just keep introducing those more beautiful ideas.
Sunsong, you're admitting you CAN'T define your terms, then...when you resort to airy dismissals, you're pretty much screwed.
No Joe, you're assuming. Those are not my terms - they are from a link I posted.
I generally am ok with dictionary definitions if you want to discuss with Bog Mike what social justice and progress mean to you.
@Lincolntf
I'm a long time lurker, but I've really had it up to here (gestures).
Let's get this straight:
Dems took control of the House and Senate in 1996.
Spending is appropriated by the House and Senate.
The President signs it into Law.
IF you want to point fingers at the deficits and "Wacky coincidence how those two years happened to be the 2 after the Dems took control of Congress. " then guess again.
Don't blame Bush for "Spending" - whether or not it was Bush's idea to fight an ill-advised war against an adversary for reasons that were made up, or to sign into law "tax cuts for millionaires" passed by a republican House and Senate in 2001 and 2003 is irrelevant. The Dems have owned the budget and the economy for the last four years.
The president can suggest spending, but he cannot mandate it unless his party controls both houses of congress AND they have confidence in his policy suggestions.
I generally am ok with dictionary definitions if you want to discuss with Bog Mike what social justice and progress mean to you.
Is "Bog Mike" a typo or some sort of code for slavic God?
oops, sorry, wrong decade. 2006.

Ann, it has always amazed me that he sucked you in for even a second.
Of course, we are our Brother's keeper. The least we could do is to keep our Brother happy, endless vacations, endless golf games, endless White House big parties, and the Brother's wife happy too. A $375,000 other brothers' money to fund the wife's Antoinnette Tour have almost taken away her unhappiness with other brothers who griped incessantly about the Brother's spending because he is black.
"By the end of the campaign, [Palin] was loathed by McCain and the McCain stalwarts..."
And you somehow think this isn't a recommendation? After all the nasty (but sadly accurate, for the most part) stuff you said about McCain earlier in the very same comment???
Fen and DBQ,
Please. "Auto" == fully auto, "a three round burst" == fully auto. I'm hoping DBQ really just meant some kind of ordinary semi-auto pistol.

Future historians will be writing about this point in time as "Obama ruined country, in two years, somehow".

Finally, Curly, I'm sure $250,000 seems like a lot of money to you. What's that? Seven years of your sorry income? So, of course, those people should be taxed. It's an issue of fairness. Who cares if unemployment is 10 percent and economic growth is depressionary?
I can see that sunsong never (unless I skipped right over it) defined where anarchy sits on the political spectrum if tyranny is an extreme to one side. Frankly, for small government types a theocracy (which is simply tyranny with priestly robes) is anathema. The fact that you think despotic tyranny and theocracy are opposite ends of the political spectrum is very telling.

November cannot come soon enough. It's good to see that Meadowlark is still part of Obama's Army, too. Some 7,999,999 deserters, including Garage (when he's being honest with himself), but not Goose. He's still going strong.
Leave Brittany alone, Six Nachos/Two Cornflakes. She didn't work her butt off all these years so that you could trash her.
Can you at least try for accuracy on the insults? Obviously you think less of people who don't make a lot of money. Thanks for sharing. You can just baldly state your contempt for the poor. No need to make it about well-off, financially, emotionally and intellectually secure classical liberals like me -- unless you resent me for lacking that contempt.
I'm sure there's a pot of gold at the end of Arthur Laffer's rainbow, and leprechauns like 4 Nachos/12 Cocao Puffs is leading the way to it, dancing around fools like Keynes. Just stop pretending that solvency is your concern. Some day, the Tea Ballers might actually learn arithmetic.
DEBT...

Who cares if unemployment is 10 percent and economic growth is depressionary?
Umm, citizen-plumbers who lie about their taxes and think that McCain can make them into a millionaire?
Meadowlark -- Do you have any idea how much better the conversation is here when you are not around?
Why do you suppose that is?
Because your sad attempts at "argumentation" read like Ashton Kutcher's Twitter feed?
Do you have any idea how much better the conversation is here when you are not around?
I do love getting under shallow little Ashton's skin.
Notice how he can't tell the difference between his contempt for the poor and his phoney "concern" for their employment.
He can't tell the difference between a personal attack and a substantive argument.
Go back to the Insta-Twitter, douchebag.
citizen-plumbers who lie about their taxes and think that McCain can make them into a millionaire
Another brilliant dive into nothingness by Curly. Please do let us know when you see any conservatives or libertarians saying McCain would have been a good president or was a good candidate.
In fact, don't come back until you find that information. Okay, Sweetwater? Thanks.
He can't tell the difference between a personal attack and a substantive argument.
However, I know what dribble means.
Vote for Machos.
When he's not insulting the poor, he's expressing concern for their ability to get a job.
FUCKING PHONY!!!
Seven Machos said, They only use the term "Mistress Althouse" in the basement room with the special equipment.
Yeah, the posts and the comments don't write themselves, you know.
(kidding! kidding! kidding! :) )
Yo, Ashton:
I didn't say that "conservatives or libertarians (said) McCain would have been a good president or was a good candidate."
I said that "citizen-plumbers who lie about their taxes... think... McCain can make them into a millionaire".
And that's the kind of stupidity you prefer to rely on to win.
Dribbling Douchebag 6 Lucky Charms.
"However, I know what dribble means."
And not much else, fortunately.
I'm insulting you, Dribbler, for your inability to understand that a tax increase for people making $250,000 a year is not a tax solely on "the rich" and, in fact, negatively affects hundreds of thousands of business owners and hardworking people. These people are exactly the ones you do not want to stifle in economic downturns.
I'm through with you, Meadowlark, because you are a conversation-killing idiot. I will leave you with some homework, though: by what crazy coincidence is it that recessions and depressions always go along with raising taxes and erecting trade barriers and engaging in large-scale government spending?
Please try your best to be brief and to write clearly. I know you don't have the capacity, but I still think the exercise can help you.
Behold 5 Horseshoes' stupendous argument at absolving any tax burden whatsoever for people making more money than the measly poor people he hates so much:
So, of course, those people should be taxed.
Machos will fix the economy by taxing 0% of income for people who make over $250,000 per year.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the Ashton Kutcher of economics.
Geez Ritmo, you still dont get it.
Maybe if Seven could reduce it to a bumper sticker slogan for you?
