Jesus, what's the hurry? I haven't started my summer yet.

"Autumn approaches?"

On August 3rd? Surely you jest.

Won't be long before Althouse starts whipping out pics of dead trees!

Well aren't you the buzz killer? Like those early-August back-to-school sales I recall as a kid.

Why is the New Englander so dour? And why does the upper midwest produce types as deeply sour and hair-trigger mean as Garrison Keillor? Because winter always threatens. Even in June the true norther counts the days till IT returns. And by August? By August the feigned relaxation of summer - for the true norther never truly relaxes, just untenses slightly - is a thing of the past as he girds for the next assault.

Be glad to get rid of the hot-and-stickies, but I'm not looking forward to Fall.

Australian summer approaches. That would be this summer, for them, unless they're a year ahead, in which case it's next summer.

Honestly, you do have some of the most beautiful pics on your website. You have a great photographic eye.

But, why so soon? Of course, it's very hot out today so maybe it's comforting to know Fall is almost here?

wv: delutt is about 150 miles north of here.

Cheers.

Those leaves better have some kind of blight, or I am going to freak out.

according to local farmers, everythings running 2-3 weeks fast around here this summer....

Down here in South Texas, we won't see anything like that until October at the earliest. Perhaps even November.

Like those early-August back-to-school sales I recall as a kid.

If my son were attending school, he'd be starting back this Thursday, Aug. 5.

As it is, we're shooting for Aug. 17, with complete ramping up taking place the following week.

Yay! Autumn is my favorite time of the year, even more so when I moved up to Virginia, where I got a proper autumn at last. Summers here are just as hot and miserable as in Florida, though fortunately of shorter duration. Winters are just a tad too cold, though the only thing I really didn't like was driving in the snow and ice. Spring is better -- gorgeous weather, everything blooming, etc. But Autumn is the best. The trees turn all sorts of wonderful colors. It's just cold enough to give you energy. The air is crisp on the dry days and when it's rainy and windy the wimps run inside to hide, leaving the cafés and streets for us autumn lovers. The kids are all in school so no clots of young idiots taking up the corners and shops. Autumn is the best season for misanthropes.

Start waxing the skis and re-lacing the snow shoes. After the November election the lakes will be freezing and Russ Feingold will be cashing in favors trying to find employment.

A lot of people think Althouse is a law prof, when Little Miss Sunshine is actually a gorilla researcher.

But, seriously, here's the latest tea parties idiocy.

Not till November for us. 100's for another two months

Where are you, Siberia? We're not even halfway through hurricane season. It was 102 here yesterday. Autumn is not on closing in. Ignore those Halloween decorations at the drug store; they always rush the seasons.

I'm most interested in people who can do the "DIY" thing. I'm particularly interested in DIY sorts who also have skills across a broad range, especially those who have an unusual depth of skill at multiple points along that broad range.

Autumn? In much of the SF Bay Area summer begins in Sept when the fog retreats.

Thus far we've had a week of cold and week of hot, rinse and repeat...it's tiresome. I want some real summer goddammit.

Voters in Missouri overwhelmingly opposed requiring people to buy health insurance, in a largely symbolic slap at the Obama administration's health overhaul..

With more than half of precincts reporting, 73% of voters supported Proposition C, establishing a state law that says Missouri cannot compel people to pay a penalty or fine if they fail to carry health coverage. Twenty-seven percent voted against the proposition
.

Autumn is the nicest time of year here in San Diego. Lovely temperatures, clear skies, ocean breezes.

A lot of people visit during the summer. Big mistake, actually.

Reminds me of a business trip from Tampa to Lansing in late August. 90 degree afternoon getting on the plane, 50 degree evening in Lansing getting off the plane.

In the last week here on Long Island I've also noticed the first tiny signs that summer is past it's zenith.

It was 102 here yesterday.

105 in Arkansas! It's been over a hundred here since Thursday. It feels a long way from Autumn.

Pretty picture though! Fall is my favorite season.

Here in Mississippi it’s not “fall” until the end of September. The humidity finally returns to a more reasonable level, and the evenings are cool and comfortable. You get a brief respite from the heat, until the rain and cold comes.

I can remember reading people's comments who lived up north of how it started getting cold in August. My jaw dropped because August here is the hottest, most humid, month of the year for us. It was miserable going to school in August, back in the days of no air conditioning (except for the principal’s office). In the early days of the school year, we’d often go “half-days” because of the heat, until September.

In my youth, school didn't start till after Labor Day. August is the hottest time of summer, and should be spent near a body of water.
