When I lived in Miami I remember there was a big fuss when The Miami Herald decided to publish his cartoons, I think in their Sunday "Tropic" magazine insert.
I lived in Portland, Oregon in the early 1990's and I used to see Callahan zooming around NW 23rd Ave. At that time in my life, I thought he was the funniest thing in the world.
I do remember the fly cartoon that TerriW referenced. Funny stuff.
He drew with a very fluid line. That's what cartoonists are supposed to do, but you've got to compute the difficulty factor of quadriplegia whem awarding points. Pekar, Callahan....not a good week for Larson or Crumb to take up hang gliding.

I always smiled when I saw someone misfile his books into the children's section.
I remember seeing his cartoons in The National Lampoon back when P. J. O'Rourke was editing it.
For me, the tastiest humor is the stuff that makes you laugh while you're thinking, "Wait, I shouldn't be laughing at this."
RIP
Don't recall seeing any of his stuff. Googled for a couple of his cartoons. Funny-goofy commentary:

My favorite cartoon of his was the fly standing at the stove, stirring a pot. On the counter was a box labelled "Cream of Shit."
The video of him singing his song Touch Me Someplace I Can Feel is very poignant.

Like his un-PC approach.
