Since I don't think anyone else has mentioned it - Happy Birthday to the US Army.

It's roots go back over 300 years and we owe them everything.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"...we owe them everything."

I very specifically owe my life to the Army. My mother joined the Army in WWII, and my father was drafted into the Army. They met there one day and married 2 weeks later.

As my whimsy leads me.. म्हणाले...

Why does the bee buzz?

You'd buzz too if somebody stole you honey and nectar.

Hey! If you look closely, you can see the "bee's knees"!

Sunday evening I saw Glenn Beck's show. He suddenly pulls out a book, and it's Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom. He says, "This is the most important book ever produced in America. This book will singlehandedly save the world."

He goes on to say that people have died for the chance to read it.

I was laughing, but the following morning it was #1 at Amazon.com. This means it must have sold at least a thousand copies an hour.

I suppose that was sweet for the U. of Chicago press, which published it. It created an enormous buzz.

The book has been dormant since it was published in 1944. It had a smash success for a book on sociology of capitalism, against planning (he says Hitler and Stalin were both just planners).

I reread it. It is a very good book. Is Glenn Beck the Oprah of political science texts?

My wife's parents met at a USO dance in Southern California, and married 5 days later, and it lasted 55 years.

Well, Alpha, this is a first for me but... thanks for posting that! Very amusing. :)

Very interesting story!

Earthquake was just north of the border.

Here in Pasadena it was a very gentle rolling, swaying the lamp a bit. My wife didn't feel it at all. Said it was the breeze or a neighbor walking by.

अनामित म्हणाले...

This reminds me of the story of the Emperor Claudius, as Joaquin Phoenix tells it:

The Emperor Claudius was betrayed... by those closest to him, by his own blood. They whispered in dark corners, and went out late at night and conspired... and conspired.

But the Emperor Claudius knew that they were up to something. He knew they were busy little bees.

One night he sat down with one of them. He looked at her. And he said:

"Tell me what you've been doing, busy little bee, or I shall strike down those dearest to you. You shall watch as I bathe in their blood."

The Emperor was heartbroken. The little bee had wounded him more deeply than anyone else could have done.

And what do you think happened then? You don't know?

That little bee taught the Emperor everything.

--

Of course, after telling that story to his innocent nephew, Joaquin Phoenix sicced the Praetorians on Russell Crowe, captured him, and used the whole bee thing as leverage to starting screw his own sister on a regular basis.

Then Joachim and Russell shared fatherly memories and a strange gay-ish moment of penetration, before Russell killed Joachim in a fight fixed to his disadvantage.

Luckily for everyone, Russell made the whole society realize its dream before he himself dropped dead. Then he went to meet his wife and child in the Afterlife.

All that because of the bees!

--

What's the moral of all this, you ask?

Moral #1: It was all a lie! Russell Crowe is not dead; he's just busy helping society realize its dream, and knitting.

Moral #2: Don't pay too much attention to the bees!!! Especially if you are a narcissistic sister-screwing Emperor whose father was the original Dumbledore before you murdered him, and whose brother offed himself by speedball.

Moral #3: The Afterlife penetrates all our souls, and America could really use someone uncorrupted by bees-- like Russell!-- to help it realize its dream.

Once I retired, I wanted to see every sunrise. I've only missed a couple. Very cloudy/rainy this morning, but I watched the daylight happen. Done with breakfast, need to shave, brush teeth, head outside, feed the cats, the horse, and then with a bucket of sunflower seeds, a walk out back to feed the turkeys, squirrels, birds. Noticed a hen this morning with a bunch of little ones. Morning -- the best time of the day.

Reposted: made a big error in first attempt.

I'm right wing. That's for sure. The thought of getting up in the morning and going to a left wing site to drive them crazy, just doesn't appeal to me. To each his own. I guess.

HDHouse,

Went to your site to check it out and - WHAM! - there's that arrogant adulterous asshat hypocrite douchebag, Sting. Now I'm gagging. Can't. Get. Air. Must,...Click,...Page,...

Except I clicked wrong and got taken to YouTube where I'm now in some stuffy piece of shit bloodless masturbation recital where, after a bit of technically good but flavorless playing, here comes Mr. Rainforest Action Committee himself, bowing (as though I don't know almost every black musician he's ever worked with hates him for his arrogance, or his every public NewAge utterance about "saving the planet" shouldn't be delivered from Mussolini's balcony with that ugly fish of a second wife, Trudy - who wrongly fired her pregnant cook because she didn't want to drive 100 miles at midnight to serve her soup, or some shit - by his side) then, fortunately, he opens his mouth - and, immediately, I scream, "NO!" and find the strength to toss my rickety old Mac across the room, sparing my ears from hearing anything more than three words.

Jesus, man, how could you? Must every liberal worship at the throne of these nannystate scarf-wearing pussies? Do you really think, other than technically, that performance is worth mentioning? Gah! I'd rather hear the Insane Clown Posse attempting to sing KISS song backwards in Chinese.

And, just so you know, I've attended more-than-my-share of Irish music festivals.

There's something very, very wrong with you if that's the level of art you celebrate. Sting. Stung.

Stunk.

KCFleming म्हणाले...

As an aside though, if anyone wants to see North Korea be humiliated just watch the World Cup today at 2:30. They will be playing Brazil.

AllenS म्हणाले...

Fuck off, fls. When Nov. 10 rolls around we can celebrate the birthday of the Marines and AllenS. Yesterday was for the Army.

AllenS म्हणाले...

So, there's no men in your family?

former law student म्हणाले...

there's no men in your family?

During WW II they were either too young or too old. Except for my dad's older brother, the paratrooper.

But he would not have overstated the Army's role in securing our freedoms.

AllenS म्हणाले...

Bullshit.

KCFleming म्हणाले...

"But he would not have overstated the Army's role in securing our freedoms."

Yet they and their progeny have since been slowly and quietly relinquishing those same freedoms.

While Nimitz and Howlin' Mad Smith were throwing Marines at every Japanese strong point they could find, MacArthur and Halsey were using the Army to go around similarly fortified ares to take the Solomons and New Guinea, isolate Rabaul, and liberate the Phillipines, which cut the Japanese Empire in two.

The reason people don't hear about the Army (21 divisions in the Pacific to the Marines' 6) is the old, "If it bleeds, it leads" meme of the media. MacArthur conserved the lives of his men - including Marines when they were under his command - while the Navy seemed Hell bent on throwing them away.

I know. I just like to make sure the record is straight. Over the years, I've seen too many examples of the Left saying something outlandish and it sticks because nobody rebuts it; not a problem here.

"MacArthur conserved the lives of his men"

MacArthur gets a bad rap ("Dougout Doug", the big hat and cane, the Bonus Army) but his tactics kept his death rates far lower than any other general in WW II.

In Europe, Patton as "Blood and Guts" was hated by his soldiers but Third Army death rates were far lower than the rest. Bradley and Hodges were more loved but they killed more of their men.

Genius tells.

Roger J. म्हणाले...

Without getting into a big brouhaha about individual services, I will tell you from my experience, I have been personally well served by all branches of our military. I have had marines come to my aid when I needed help; I have air force guys drop bombs exactly where I asked for them; I have the New Jersey fire 16 inch shells to within 500 meters of where I needed them.

This nation is well served by all branches--parochialism is fun among vets, but be assured the military is a very effective team. We call them squids, gyrines, and zoomies--but when the chips are down, any one of these guys will be covering you.

TWM म्हणाले...

"But he would not have overstated the Army's role in securing our freedoms."

I read somewhere (can't find where now) that the United States Army is a magnificent hammer that pounds our enemies into submission, while the United States Marines are a sword that pierces their hearts.

Both deserve our thanks and admiration and really the only people who can legitmately dis one over the other are the soldiers and marines themselves.

An amusing moment during the match was when Martin Tyler said the NoK supporters at the game were actually Chinese actors hired by Kim Jong Il.

I also wish they had delved into how NoK had three players who play professionally outside of NoK. One of the expats was actually sobbing during the NoK national anthem. All of the others were singing strongly, probably thinking if they didn't they would be sent to the Gulag when they return home.
