So now there's this theory that the iPad is going to cause insomnia but the Kindle will not.
This is a big, long article in CNN that doesn't seem have much science to it. Theoretically, the light emanating from electronic screens is different from the light from a lamp that bounces off a paper book or a nonglowing screen like the Kindle. Much is made of blueness.

I've noticed that if I'm on the computer late at night, I have a hard time going to sleep, as opposed to just reading a book or watching TV.
Horse poop.
A few months ago I'd typically fall asleep with a book in my hand. A few months ago, I bought an iPod Touch; and now I frequently fall asleep with my iPod in my hand. I'll find it buried under the covers or on the floor in the morning.
But I never fall asleep reading the Althouse blog -- it's much too interesting. Riveting, actually. It's those few other blogs I read that will make me drift off.
These ideas are just dumb and the people who propose them even more so.
The need to write something and meet a publisher's deadline has probably created more junk science/old wives tales than any other cause.
As my sister the doctor would say, Where's the study? I love my Kindle and probably won't switch, but you wonder about the source of such speculation and whether its purpose is to steer the undecided away from the IPad...
I find when I use my iPad in bed I am out like a light even when I want to stay awake.
This sounds like the sort of thing that got people in a tizzy about the waltz - supposedly, it would turn people into sex maniacs because its beat was faster than the human pulse.
Internet surfing gives me insomnia, but reading a book on my iPhone makes me sleepy just like reading a dead-tree book does. I think it's the content rather than the glowiness.
If people really have a problem falling asleep because they've been playing with their iPad, I suppose they could always turn on CNN.
Let's be clear. Althouse is an Apple-tard and will never ever find fault with anything they do.
The only thing I've noticed with reading my iPad at night is that you don't want it to be the only source of light in the room -- otherwise it's like staring into a flashlight just before going to sleep.
You can either turn down the iPad's brightness or just keep my small lamp on like I do. Works great!
I read myself to sleep every night using a netbook, iTouch, or Kindle. Never had any problem falling to sleep although I also have a small light on my bed stand. I hope to prove that's it's all junk science ,next week, when my iPad arrives.
