"And here I was needing to anesthetize like never before."

Said Robert Downey, Jr.:
The wife has moved out, the kid's gone, my life is a fucking babyshambles, and I suddenly make the neuropathic connection that there's nowhere the coke can be but the garbage, and I fucking dig in the thing and there it is, and it's so fucking pure and so clean and there I am, in my own kitchen, cooking up some rock — no Vicodin, no Valium, nothing to take the edge off, barely a trace of fucking Absolut Citron left in the fridge, and I just go, 'This is as good as it gets right now.' I just go, 'Bam!,' triumph of the spirit. And the next thing that happens, I'm in custody within two weeks for even stranger reasons, and the phone rings, and it's the phenom's son and he goes, 'Hey, dude, do you have any more of that opium?' I, of course, told him it was opium. Never call it heroin, it's very taboo. But this stuff, this Mexican sludge, just grabbed you by the fucking heartstrings and tore me apart. All those years of snorting coke, and then I accidentally get involved in heroin after smoking crack for the first time. It finally tied my shoelaces together. Smoking dope and smoking coke, you are rendered defenseless. The only way out of that hopeful state is intervention.
Tie your shoelaces separately.

I think the poll, "a douchebag/an artist/a rational participant in economic reality" would be appropriate here too.

In The Unexpergated Code, J. P. Donleavy noted that if peeing off your hotel balcony makes your fans rush beneath in hope of being blessed by the golden droplets--you have arrived.

Robert Downey Jr. has arrived.

Previous post said Morton Downey Jr. who was a talented but entirely different scumbag. Fuck me.

I hope this was back when because the guy is fabulous and it would be a horrible shame if he ever got back into the self-destructive garbage.

Saw Iron Man 2. It's good.

Still need to watch Sherlock Holmes over again. That was beyond incredible.

So that's what that new arc core was made out of. Daddy Stark left Tony the recipe for cooking the ultimate crack rock.

The last movie I ever saw him in was Less than Zero. Oddly enough he turned out to be the poster child for art imitating life.

“…his current state of mind, which he describes as "the continual process of transcending fear-based rituals."”

We don't need to be smoking crack or heroin to have a few of our own fear-based rituals to transcend.

And he's finding that he doesn't either.

Robert Downey Jr. is in desperate need of an egg sandwich.

Am I evil to hope that his fear based rituals now involve working all the time?

I was just thinking the other day about what a great actor this guy is, and how I hope he has his shit together now, and doesn't waste his gift.

Man - I admire that guy alot. Very good actor and also found his way back from the abyss.

Robert Downey's life screw-ups and his every little nuanced drug reaction every day sure is a refreshing tale of a man with hundreds of special second chances that don't ever seem to run out. Could this be true?

Is there any really good addiction literature aside from "Confessions of an Opium Eater?" Yes, he's incredibly attractive, and he's killer talented, but have to admit that I'm attracted to him because of his appeal of being the protagonist of one of the first ever mediatised Bildungsromans, or Case Studies, or whatever.

Guy is a great actor and if there is any lesson here is that we need to give drug-addicted people chances to recover their lives - not put it to our "law enforcement heroes" and jails to "solve the problem".

Hell if EYE know? But it's mighty nice to see so many like Synova, tg and Be asking questions.

Don't you find that, all too often in comment sections, we "state" more than "ask" questions for clarity or even to keep a two-way discussion going?

That is in fact the prevailing view for many, c4, but surely you noticed that this great actor and currently clean addict was not in favor of legalizing drugs. It would be interesting to find out more about why he feels that way.

This is one of many links read today that gives us just enough to be interested, while asking us to spend some money to find out more. Not just talking about Althouse here, but other sites as well.

EXCELLENT thinking!

"Free" is apparently meeting his or her first cousin, once removed. Nice to meet you "Value".

@Penny - for all I know, "Confessions of an Opium Eater" could have been self-published (as most stuff was at the time). I'm only saying that I find him one of the few remotely *inneresting* media personalities out there and that I'm interested in his story...as much as I can get for free, of course.

I also have a personal thing, (Titus, help me out! We're neighbors!) in that I like dark men who speak well (does that make me racist because I'm a blonde?)... and that I come from a family background of serious substance abuse.

You are always free to not buy the magazine or see the movie that the star / offensive person in question has a part in.

He has hinted in other interviews that his incarceration helped him get clean:

“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”

That's true, Be.

But please pay your taxes.

This "I am free" business can get out of hand in a hurry.
