Today's front page of the SF Chron featured a couple having a party to raise funds for their in vitro fertilization. Speaking of the father's contribution, the felt banner behind the couple was later used for a game of pin the sperm on the ovum:

Wow, that's a lot of frozen blueberries.

I only shop at Whole Foods to get nitrite-free hot dogs, or bulk flours and grains because I don't have to overbuy. Their 365 range of products are good value though.

In health care news, Anthem Blue Cross (for-profit/California) is raising rates on individual policies up to 39%.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

That looks like a market for fat cats ;)

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

OMG.. this is why Meade is not commenting as much anymore.. Meade is being slowly starved to death on a diet of berries and bananas ;)

NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg is asking for a march on Washington to demand that fat-cat bankers get more bonuses, not less.

I was never big on that kind of canine cuisine, but I hear the chef at Whole Foods Market-Madison is kinda pushy.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Bloomberg is a fat cat too.. so its expected that fat cats stick up for each other ;)

wv - debitr - Bloomberg's debit card is rated r for fat cats.

Oh I almost forgot.

Althouse set the thermostat at 52° and sometimes lower.

Banana ice cream in the winter time.. I dont know if Meade knew what he was getting into ;)

I had a stuffed monkey. I must have swung him around too hard because his tail tore off. He was also missing an eye.

I'm in the mood for mussels but the regular neighborhood store is perpetually mussel-less. Luckily, there's a nearby WF and another similar even closer, and in some ways better, called Tony's.

Man, I've got my Hollandaise act down.

But in other news, Sabuda's and Reinhart's Gods and Heros arrived today. I'm awestruck and humbled. I love it right off the bat because the cover has Anibus and the first page is an awesome Anibus fold-out. The background are authentic readable hieroglyphics, not just made-up crap. The whole thing is slightly more simple compared to some of their previous books, but nonetheless inspiring.

अनामित म्हणाले...

So you could say, Chip Ahoy, that you whacked your monkey around a little too much?

Chip Ahoy म्हणाले...

Yes, exactly.

Jason (the commenter) म्हणाले...

अनामित म्हणाले...

@Chip- I've been surfing around your websites. Looking at the animations and the pop-up cards and the broccoli is very calming... and satisfying.

fls - we get the same hot dogs at Whole Foods.

And Anthem Blue Cross: I know - my personal healthcare contribution just went up $200 a month.

Ariadne Huffanan has plans for Whole Foods. Of course, the Teapartiers have denouced her as a COMMUNIST who's CLOWARDPIVEN strategy is to end CAPITALISM, but WHAT do they KNOW?

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

How is it that the most empobrished country in this hemisphere following its worst natural disaster in its history has the wherewithal to control its border to the extent that it can misidentify what appeared to them as child traffic.

Meade is in a state of stasis, much like the azaleas. Come spring (which may be sooner than expected, I saw a couple of Canadian geese on the wing this morning), he will emerge in full flower - at which point Ann will plant him.

BTW -

Colin Powell worrying about the would be concerns that gitmo raised vis-a-vis the Geneva convention wrote...

The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism.

Meanwhile here are these Americans misionaries being unjustly held in Haity and we have not heard a peep from Powell.

Am I off the reservation here?

BJM म्हणाले...

I see that Chateau Thames is on sale in your WF too. I picked up a Willamette Valley Vineyards 2008 Whole Cluster Pinot Noir at our WF that was very, very tasty and especially good with Thai takeout.

btw-Central Valley asparagus and early California strawberries are coming to market...look for them as they are the plumpest, juiciest and most flavorsome berries of the year.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Well, Jason, all I've gotta say is I have zero interest in Protestant "theologians."

Hope that is Pius IX enough for you conservative Catholics out there.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Lem, that's "Haiti," and, no, you are not off the reservation.

(I make similar typos despite spellchecking. What's wrong with us?)

अनामित म्हणाले...

BJM: Grocery stores, in general, can't sell wine here in Massachusetts. Only "package stores." Or you can go to nearby New Hampshire, where there are state liquor stores (good and cheap) attached to toll booths.

Stop. Pay toll. Buy pinot grigio.

Welcome to New England, were buying wine is easy, but very weird.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Thanks Theo. (i get mixed up with the spanish Haity)

BTW 2

The unforeseen twists and turns of American politics.

While Teddy Keneddy made it possible for Brown to win "his" seat in Massachusetts.. (twice changing the rules for vacated seats)

Colin Powell has made it harder for Obama to go back and do the politically expedient thing and try (the now homeless) KSM in a military tribunal.

What seems brilliant one day can turn around and bite them in the ass.

Peter V. Bella म्हणाले...

Am I off the reservation here?

You are very far off the reservation. You are in the desert. Those idiots violated Haitian law and did not bother submitting proper documentation to the Haitian authorities. Further, there has been a long well known continual tension between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

These people not only violated Haitian law, but the stupid rule. They deserve whatever happens to them.

Altruism is an ideal. Reality bites you on the ass.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

BTW 3

To be honest, listening to this story..
The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism, in the context of the failed christmas bombing, makes me a little.. exuberant because its an arguable vindication of sorts to what we have been arguing were the best for the nation Bush policy.

But at the same time how could i be feeling in any way celebratory when well over a 100 people could have lost their lives.. its kind of creepy.

Politicizing the WOT is creepy... but thats were we are.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Those idiots violated Haitian law and did not bother submitting proper documentation to the Haitian authorities.

They were there to help.. they should not have to spend years in jail over a bureaucratic snafu.

It will in very least deter the people they need most over there.

Lem: I like both of those words. But then there's ...

...murmuring, which I like even more.

***

All of which reminds me of the opening of particular book:

Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York. Especially in the summer of 1912. Somber, as a word, was better. But it did not apply to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Prairie was lovely and Shenandoah had a beautiful sound, but you couldn’t fit those words into Brooklyn. Serene was the only word for it; especially on a Saturday afternoon in summer.

I have been wanting to say this for a while... The acorn does not fall far from the tree... one reads about his dad and the hard time his dad had in adjusting to "life"...I think BO is having just as hard a time in working through issues of real life and coming out balanced...instead he appears to have some issues that he is still "beating out" in his personal life and we all get partake in that... a marriage and family therapist would have a ton of fun with this... He learned something though...to play it cool and fool people and he might be able to get his agenda past people...trouble is, we all see it eventually...one can not hide forever.

thanks for listening....

Regarding the wine comments on this thread: there's a brand called Barefoot, I kid you not, which is quite good and quite cheap, like $7 a bottle. I've tried their Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and was more than satisfied with both. Just a thought.

Fred4Pres म्हणाले...

What market is that? Whole Foods?

I have no problem with its selection, but other than some loss leaders the prices are crazy high and if you know where to go you can find most of that stuff cheaper elsewhere.

Nitrate free dogs. Easier now, try finding those pups in the 70s. You literally had to make your own. And who really wants to know what is in a hot dog, nitrates or not.

There are lots of fairly okay table wine options at $7 a bottle. I would go Woodbridge before I went Barefoot. There are a decent selection of wines, domestic and import, at Trader Joe's in that range.

I am pretty sure Professor Bainbridge would not approve of Barefoot.

Even Professor Reynolds likes his wine to taste like grape jelly! (I kid because I love).

Ann Althouse likes to talk about "principles conservatism" as if it exists.

Here we have Alabama Republican Senator Richard Shelby holding up every one of Obama's appointments until a campaign donor and defense contractor is awarded a contract.

This is taking obstructionism to new depths - extortion. Very principled, right, Althouse?

The holds include defense and national security positions, laying bare the hollow hypocrisy that Republicans give a rat's ass about American security. It's all a tool for their self-aggrandizement.

(Full disclosure: My uncle the baker used to make and sell gingerbread houses to raise funds for SOS Children's Villages, donating his time and materials.)

How funny -- a Republican Senator holding the administration hostage till it coughs up some earmarks.

The GOP isn't ready for reform yet.

And Shelby's the same Republican who couldn't push through Fannie/Freddie reform through his Senate Banking Committee during the four years he ran it, despite the support of the great John McCain.

Re: Cheap wine.

Unfortunately, here in Massachusetts, California wines are more expensive than they are in their home state. I visit California at least a couple of times a year, and am always happy to see relatively cheap, local wine in...heaven forbid!...GROCERY STORES. (We defeated a referendum last election that would have permitted a similar nightmare for our liquor store owners.)

Around here, the best bargains are inevitably Australian or South African wines. Being a native Californian with roots in the state back to the Gold Rush, I have been in most things a California chauvinist

When it costs me $4 or $5 a bottle extra, my loyalty gets a bit frayed.

A song I'm learning:

♫ "Oh, there once was a swagman,
Who camped in a billabong,
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched the old billy boilin'..."♫

Napa/Sonoma is pricing itself out of the market, even in the Bay Area. We're kind of spoilt here as our Safeway has a sommelier and a huge selection, plus a 6 bottle discount. I'm currently drinking MacMurray Central Coast Pinot.

Oregon is said to be the next big thing, wine-wise.

The Spaniards are coming on strong too...look for Riojas like the '06 Martin Codax Tempranillo or an '06 Bilbainas Vina Zaco...yummy black cherry and smoky chocolate oak flavors...both should sell for around $10-12...maybe cheaper on the Eastern Seaboard.

Barefoot's a little too brash for me, but try Lehmann Clancy's Red '05, a Shiraz, Cab & merlot blend ...or the '07 Cimicky Trumps Shiraz.
