Now, here is a bold and original movie poster!

Via Awards Daily.

There's also this poster for the movie. Good, but very much trying to be Saul Bass. Maybe the one I like so much is also in the style of someone else, and I just don't know it. And if you're going to try to be somebody, and you're a poster designer, be Saul Bass. He's so iconic, it's not a ripoff but an homage. And it's so refreshing to see movie posters that aren't actors' faces.

Make sure you watch the trailer. It's very heavy. Could be great!

A movie based on "Push" ???

I read it years ago, and just can't imagine wanting to see it.

The 2nd one is damn close to a Anatomy Of A Murder ripoff...unless of course he also designed that one, too.

And it turns out...he did.

Trailer was wonderful.

Yeah I've been excited about this movie for a while, even though it has Mooriah Scary.

I read this book back in the early 90s. I now see it as just one of many books which exploit and capitalize on graphic child molestation. It's the whole "edgy" thing. Everybody's trying to be the next The Color Purple.

I realize this is a generalization, but I still believe it to be true of many works of modern fiction.

"Precious" also sounds a lot like "Beloved."

Sorry, love the poster, I just want some new ideas in movies. This seems... not new. Or original. I find the enthusiasm weird.

I would like to see a white director/producer/executive getting away with this movie poster.

I love that poster. Also, why are contemporary movie posters so awful, generally? It's like the randomly photoshop a bunch of stuff together.

What is it about the one sheet you think would be so troublesome for someone white?

They (one sheets) used to be hand drawn by the artists at each studio but computers have pretty much eliminated the craft. The originals that still exist are extremely valuable.

The movies don't deserve any better, for the most part.

Why are posters so awful? Well why the hell are movies awful? Because they are purely a function of fitting into West Hollywood dinner parties.

The poster's great, but with that cast the movie's sure to be a bomb.

Penny म्हणाले...

I'm not so sure about that ricpic. Michelle and big O will probably go see it on one of their "date nights", whereupon this movie will become DA BOMB!

My idea of a good movie poster.

Chris Althouse Cohen म्हणाले...

ricpic: I understand why you're saying that, but this movie got a standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival and all the early reviews have been raves. Mo'Nique has genuine Oscar buzz and it looks great. Also, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz might just have bit parts, or at least very small ones. The focus is on the daughter, who's played by an unknown actress named Gabourey Sidibe. Sometimes heavy dramas with actors who don't have a good reputations (or any reputations) for their acting ability end up being great. Sometimes those performances win Oscars, like Charlize Theron in Monster or Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. And there's some Oscar-worthy acting in the trailer from Mo'Nique and also Gabourey Sidibe, who I'm really rooting for based on the trailer.

The poster art reminded me instantly of this, although it has been some years since I read the book.

I used to have this one, this one and this one.

They were perfect in my first place. I dont remember what happened to them.

ricpic म्हणाले...

The poster you think highly of, Lem, is a ripoff of the Belgian surrealist, Magritte. Not that it isn't a good poster, buy it's obviously lifted from his work.

Penny म्हणाले...

How odd, and I thought it was lifted from my mind. Except for the blonde hair and Robin William's face.

blake म्हणाले...

Appreciate the classics, I say.

this is the Saul Bass one that sticks in my mind:

There are faces and even bodies.

Oprah loves this movie and is all excited about the star.

So, is the movie about a black anglican altar server or choir boy? that's what the graphic looks like, whether it was intentional or not.

The Crack Emcee म्हणाले...

Big at Cannes and Oprah likes it - Oooh. I can't wait.

Wait - yes, I can. Fuck France and Oprah.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

@Crack LOL on the "Fuck France." That's hilarious.
