... if I had the time to figure out how to export the blog and start in a new place, such as HostingMatters. But I am too busy today and the technical stuff makes my head swirl. I can't afford the distraction. If this Blogger screw-up makes me miss a day of posting at Althouse, when I have an unbroken 5 1/2 year streak of daily posting, I will hate Blogger with a vicious fury.
hate hate hate hate hate Blogger.....
UPDATE: Well, my long streak is unbroken, so I am spared the ordeal of a vicious fury!

Appreciate your frustration, but one glitch every three years on a free service is not all that bad a track record. Hosting Matters is a great outfit but also had its share of problems over the years.

I already hate Blogger and left it in a huff after I spent several weeks (maybe even a couple of months) being tagged by their idiotic software as a possible spam blog and absolutely no response from any Blogger person on fixing it. I have my own site so I installed WordPress and rolled my own. It did, in fact, take some time to set it up and get spam filters going, but I rarely have downtime and, frankly, I find myself to be a much better tech support person than Blogger was.
I don't have as many widgets and junk at the new one, but I don't miss them much. I just post everything I want anyway; I'm all abuot the content, baby.

Randy, yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. That, and the problem of the immortality of the blog. If you pay and you die, you need to find some way to keep paying to keep it up. That's why I would rather trust Google with Blogger.

It's probably my fault. I wrote a spirited rebuttal to your response to amba on the "Neda" thread. Probably melted a server, a couple routers somewhere, not to mention some of those cheap disks EMC uses internally.
The long and the short of it is that you're overdoing your skepticism about the young woman in the video. I'm with JAL, the former nurse. You're watching a young woman die violently -- not "apparently" -- which you can tell from the fact that she doesn't blink after the blood (okay, "apparently" blood) gushes from her mouth into one of her eyes.
I understand your desire to be skeptical, and I even agree that we have no notion how she came to take her fatal wound. Deliberate aiming? Accident? But, yeah, she was killed.

I have no special desire to be skeptical. I'm just maintaining awareness that we are swimming in propaganda and something could be well staged.

What Randy said. Computer software isn't robust. I'm certain it never will be, at least in my lifetime. My ire is saved not for the software itself, but the perpetually PollyAnnish softheads who are always so shocked when it doesn't work.

I've heard good things about Squarespace, and they have lots of migration tools to make the transition easy from blogger.
Free trial, plus 10% off on your account if you use the This Week in Tech referral link above.
Might be worth a try.

This is why Ann voted for Obama: secretly, she is like him, commitment-phobic and overly wedded to her 'fierce vow of neutrality'/intellectual aloofness.
Funny that I never guessed till now..

Personally, I'd still consider your record unbroken. As I recall it, you made a commitment to write a post and post it every day, not that your blog platform would work 100% perfectly 100% percent of the time, for all time.

The daily posting thing has been rather remarkable given everything else you have going on.
I've had enough trouble just trying to post a photo a day without much comment (and I had to cheat a bit over Memorial Day Weekend) over the past few months, you generate real content on a daily basis.
Hopefully blogger will resolve this issue promptly and you can keep your streak going on your main site.

I used to work with Hosting Matters - was running 5 dedicated servers with them before outgrowing their capacity earlier this year. I can't remember ever having downtime other than a single time when the power went out in their area.
Stacey and Annette are great, and I'd recommend going there to anyone.

Even if you're baffled, they like to hear it. They feel they're in on it then.

I think your trust in Google to always be there and give your blog immortality is misplaced.
It's not like large corporations haven't been, or are in the process of being, erased from the face of the earth.
That, and the usual changes in technology, will make your current blog either inaccessible or painfully obsolete in perhaps 10, certainly 20 years.
What won't be obsolete is the writing. There has been some very good material on your blog over the years.
I think if you want as much immortality as words can have, you should compile a book or two from the best of your blog.
Yes, the blog may continue and evolve. But electrons will always be more ephemeral than ink on paper. Printed words may not reach as many as quickly, but they will, like the tortoise in the race, will outlast the inevitable day when someone pulls the plug.

Ann, the migration should be handled by your new hosting company, either bundled as an option. They want your business, they handle the move of your info from Blogger.
If your new hosting company does not do that for you, then they shouldn't be your new hosting company. It's basic customer service.
And SquareSpace would be a great option for you, in my opinion.

Turn your entire blog into a nice long book. *Then* you are immortal, frozen in time among the pages of a book on a shelf somewhere.

It looks like a video of death to me. I don't have much skepticism that a woman was shot and died in the streets of Tehran.
However, I agree with Althouse's second paragraph (in her response to my dear blogfriend Amba) as a general statement of principle. In fact, I applaud the principles therein, full stop.
Finally, to be clear, I think it's a too strong to say Amba, specifically, is "making herself a tool of propaganda... ", because I know that she's been considering alternative points of view, on and offline, and NOT shouting them down or putting down the people expressing skepticism in general (Neda's not the only discussion point, etc.). And she's done a little shouting out of her own at some extreme statements ... .

Man, I'll remember not to piss you off, Professor Althouse.
As to the video, I second Althouse's skepticism, not because I can evaluate a video and tell if it's a real death, but because the propaganda war is intense and it's easy to be fooled. Some confirmation beyond the video would help.
I did not even watch the video, as I had no desire to watch a young woman die, and even less to evaluate whether her death was "real."
May God--anybody's God--help all these people.

My only complaint about blogger is that my account is tied to my yahoo email, not my gmail (which I like to keep strictly friends and family). But because google has tied them together (for no reason I can fathom), anytime I want to post a comment on blogger, I have to sign out of gmail. I don't see any reason for this particular "synergy" and it pisses me off anew every single time.
But I pay nothing for my blogspot page so I can't get too worked up about the false "spam" lock (which happened once and they fixed it in a couple days) and other occasional problems.

here you are.
I've been having problems with gmail for like a week. Really bad loading. Things pause and get stuck. Just like what's happening with blogger.
Curious.
Got to thinking maybe it's a Google issue that has something to do with their ownership of both youtube and blogger.
A little war on the internets being waged by Iran.
At least a little conspiracy makes me feel like it's all something more than a little glitch and that, in a way, I'm having to bear my burden too for the sake of freedom.

POST A COMMENT
Ann- I was worried when lunch came and went and I didn't see a post. Didn't know to look at the other site. What will happen if you are standing between Meade and the table with the computer and you have to choose one?
WOW. It's pretty cool that Freeman Hunt is a linked-in woman. @freemanhunt Thanks for the heads up, I'm in touch with Ann about her @Blogger issues. [@rkalu]
Freeman tweets, Althouse's blog is set free!!!
Yeah, thanks Freeman.
Is it really true that tweeting for help with #Blogger or #Google is more effective than putting the question in the Blogger forums, where Blogger tells us to go?
Don't know. Who knows for sure? Who can document? (Who does?) Maybe approaches work in tandem. Maybe one just encourages another. Maybe it's serendipity. Always interesting to watch the interplay. Always interesting to watch the language employed, where, how and when, and whether it can be read in more than one way.
There are a lot of things I dislike about Blogger; I particular don't like the way everything is necessarily linear.
I don't know. I want Venn diagrams or something.
