"Literary puke Christopher Hitchens leveled a vile, hateful attack against [Wanda] Sykes that wasn't meant to be a joke."

Politics Daily's Tommy Christopher wails. It's is the first I'm seeing of this. Apparently, Hitchens said: "The president should be squirming in his seat. Not smiling. The black dyke got it wrong. No one told her the rules." Tommy chides:
I haven't heard "boo" out of the right denouncing Hitchens for this, yet they want to portray their poobah, Rush Limbaugh, who imagines that people expect him to receive anal sex from the President just because he's black, as the poor widdle victim here.
Uh... boo.

IN THE COMMENTS: I say the joke was funny and the President wasn't laughing at it. I get some pushback.

No one told the politically incorrect Brit the rules... you can denounce the religious and tell people they're beliefs are nonsense but you cannot use the word "dyke" to describe someone who would describe herself with that word.

A pure leftist would be allowed to use that word but not someone who is ideologically impure. Hitchens, a socialist, who supports aspects of the war against Islamic terror is not ideologically pure and is, therefore, considered a man of the Right by those of the Left.

There was another Left-leaning movement that was labeled "Right-leaning" by the hardest-left Socialists and Communists. Now, which movement was that?

TWM म्हणाले...

Is "dyke" pejorative? Wiki says it was "reappropriated as a positive term implying assertiveness and toughness, or simply as a neutral synonym for lesbian."

I agree with Hitchens about a few things but generally find him a bit pompous. But rebuking a "vile, hateful" attack with insults is really quite funny!

Sly Stone had a song about that, "Don't Call Me N-word, Whitey."

I would insert something about the pot calling the kettle black, but I would not want to be misunderstood.

And for the record, Sykes makes me laugh when I see her on tv and she has to keep her material on the clean side. I think she can be very funny. But then I am a tolerant Evangelical conservative.

Hoosier Daddy म्हणाले...

Were conservatives really 'outraged' that Limbaugh was the butt of a hateful joke?

I mean I wasn't mainly because I guess I'm rather numb to it. There was a time I was not so much outraged but surprised that folks who pride themselves on being progressive and would hold candlelight vigils for convicted murderers being executed would in turn wish painful death on someone simply for holding an opposing viewpoint.

Who was that chick who said she hoped Clarence Thomas's wife would feed him a lot of butter and bacon and eggs so he'd die soon. I think my desensitivity started around then.

I love the term "literary puke" to describe Hitch. He is so literate that they Alinsky-attack on him personally goes after his most notable strength. No mention of whether he was right...just a crude insult followed by an equivalency diatribe about Public Enemy Limbaugh who also has said semi-insulting things in a different venue. The left really does act like a roaring lion seeking whom they may devour since Soros became their Sugar-daddy. Hitch is a problem for the left since his literary skills allow him to resist their Lions' roars and stand fast.

Sigivald म्हणाले...

I'm not on "the Right", but this is the first I've heard of Hitchens saying that, and I'll happily "boo" him for being a prat.

On topics non-geopolitical, that's Hitchens' normal state, as near as I can tell.

Joan म्हणाले...

I don't know why, but I continue to be mystified by this type of reaction.

Hitchens knows that Sykes is a black lesbian, but he went for "dyke" instead because it's pithy and pretty much guaranteed to get a rise out of some people. That's Hitchens' stock in trade.

What really got me about the linked article is that Christopher says "the President and I have the stones to say [Sykes] was wrong" but the article he links to quotes Gibbs, a mealy-mouthed WH spokesperson if ever there was one:

"a lot of topics are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I don't think there's any doubt that 9/11 is a part of that."

1) How, exactly does that answer the question of how the President felt about Sykes' comments regarding Limbaugh? It's completely non-responsive.

2) Why do we even need to ask the question? Don't we have video footage of the President laughing at Sykes' routine?

Absurd.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

For clarity - is the vile, hateful attack calling her a "dyke" or is it saying that she doesn't understand the rules that she's "supposed" to play by or something else, or a combination?

The humor at those dinners should be aimed at the President, either self depricating by himself or from the Emcee. Look at the comparable Bush dinners.

Rush has said he wants Obama to fail, and she was riffing on "fail." It's already been said that Rush wants "the country" to fail, so she didn't start that.

Jeremy म्हणाले...

Considering the fact that Rush himself constantly defends harsh and demeaning comments by referring to himself as an "entertainer"...just like Wanda Sykes.

Here are two of his bits that most here probably think were absolutely hilarious:

1. "We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward, whichever, because his father was black, because this is the first black president."

2. "Obama is holding his own against both of them--doing more than his share of the "spade" work. Maybe even gaining ground at the moment. Using not only the spade ladies and gentleman---that when he finishes with the "spade" in the garden of corruption planted by the Clinton's, he turns to the "hoe."

Are racist jokes funnier than failing kidney jokes?

We've all (mostly) lost the ability to laugh at lots of things that are funny. PC police on the alert.

The problem is it only goes one way. Sykes can wish death to Limbaugh and joke about it (that's ok with me). The left will not only not punish her, but loves her for it.

But then there's the other side.

If Rush, or Hannity, or Levin, or Savage were to make the same kind of "joke" about a prominent member of one of the now-too-numerous-to-mention "victim" groups, there would be hell to pay.

Imus got thrown off the air for making a lousy joke about how some black women basketball players looked.

A female golf commentator got (some punishment I can't remember) for joking that the only way to beat Tiger at golf was to lynch him. There was no ill-intent, it was a compliment. She just forgot for a second and used a forbidden word.

George Allen (I think) ended his own career by using the word macaca, which no one had ever heard before.

Media matters and other groups record Rush, Hannity, Savage, Levin and others EVERY DAY just hoping for the opportunity to force them off the air because of some un-PC remark.

The problem is not making a joke that is/is not funny. Who cares? It's the differential treatment.

Dust Bunny Queen म्हणाले...

I don't understand. Wasn't this SUPPOSED to be a roast type comedy? I'm not sure that it is even out of place.

Jen. A roast type of comedy is where you have people gently and lovingly poking fun at the host, not viciously attacking political enemies who are not present.

If this were truly a roast the jokes would have been good natured jibes about Obama. Instead it was a nasty, mean, cruel and terribly revealing event that shows just how nasty mean and cruel the left really is.

AND the jokes were not really very funny.

Bush's Iraq WMDs joke backfires

President Bush in Oval Office
The president could be seen bending over to peer at the floor of the Oval Office
US President George W Bush has sparked a political row by making a joke about the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

At a black-tie dinner for journalists, Mr Bush narrated a slide show poking fun at himself and other members of his administration.

One pictured Mr Bush looking under a piece of furniture in the Oval Office, at which the president remarked: "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere."

After another one, showing him scouring the corner of a room, Mr Bush said: "No, no weapons over there," he said.

And as a third picture, this time showing him leaning over, appeared on the screen the president was heard to say: "Maybe under here?"

The joke about the fruitless search for Iraqi WMDs so far, Washington's prime justification for the US-led invasion, has been branded as tasteless and ill-judged.

F-U-N-N-Y stuff, huh?

Your argument that Obama should be able to completely withdraw all troops, contractors and equipment within a timetable of about 90 days is so ridiculous, on so many levels, I'm surprised even someone as dense as yourself would continue foisting it on me.

Since you live in Indiana and pride yourself on knowing the corn seasons, maybe if you thought of the pullback in terms of...corn.

It takes about 6 months to plant and harvest...corn.

So why would you possibly think Obama could pull everybody and everything out in a shorter period of time?

Unless of course you actually do believe he's the...messiah?

Jen - I have no idea how long you've been posting here, but there is one concrete rule to keep in mind:

Anybody who disagrees, offers up contrary viewpoints, is not a conservative, a wingnut, a far right Christian, a fan of Rush, Sean, Savage, Coulter, O'Reilly, Ingraham, Beck or other right wing talking heads (although most say they NEVER listen to any of them...sure), or has the temerity to represent themselves as being a liberal...is immediately typecast as a "troll."

There are some, but not many here, who will actually engage in discussion and debate, but if there is even a hint liberalism in your opinion...be prepared for the "pack" garnering their members and ushering up massive and ongoing attack on literally anything you say.

I personally post many of my comments in response to some of the inane right wing drivel I read, but I must admit, I also post many just to watch the percolating insanity rise up and spew forth.

They're sooooooooooo easy and sooooooooooo locked into their beliefs you can sometimes get them rolling by just typing in O-b-a-m-a.

I was at the ceramics supply shop the other day talking to the sales clerk about glazes. I remarked I was looking for the good stuff, not the mineral infused mud used in do-it-yourself shops. I wondered aloud why they used them, sloppy as they are. The clerk said, "Probably because so many children are taken to those shops. Careful now, if you ingest this stuff, it'll kill you." I go, "Will it be a swift death, or will it be an agonizing lingering painful death with much suffering?" A young man who was also at the counter and overheard our conversation erupted in hysterical laughter at the question, which wasn't at all funny. This caused me to question if I've lost touch with what is actually funny and what is not. That, and constantly being hit.

My brother understands me. He picks up and goes along with everything. Concerned if I had been paying attention to him, he stops and tells me to repeat what he said to prove it. I repeat his last points using his key words but mangle its meaning so completely to produce an utterly nonsensical string but act satisfied that it all made sense. He gets what I did, and goes, "OK." As if all that crap really was what he meant, confident I was listening and got the true meaning.

In Maui he was renting another car. Again. Electricista de profesión, nadie es más macho que él. Taking longer than need be, he was chatting it up with the clerk, an attractive young Hawaiian native, while I waited outside. Getting tired of waiting, I opened the door but stayed in the doorway and speaking across the lobby as if we were lovers and not brothers everyone present cold hear, said, "Darling. Will you be much longer?" He looks at me, looks at her, she's cracking up laughing, rolls his eyes and plays along, replying tenderly, "No, Dear. Just another moment."

About this Sykes/Limbaugh/Hittchens/Obama laughing/not laughing/appropriate or not kerfuffle, I haven't a clue. I do believe, though, that those who dish it must brace themselves to take it, and I believe further our shiny wonderful new president is remarkably thin-skinned.

Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails
January 16, 2009

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_011609/content/01125113.guest.html

So Limbaugh hopes that Obama's Presidency is a failure. Right now unemployment is going up, our domestic auto industry is failing, our stocks are back where they were after the dot-com bust, people are afraid to spend money. Oh, and we're fighting two wars.

For Obama to fail, the state of our union will stay the same or even get worse.

And this is what Limbaugh would wish upon the nation.

Sorry Althouse, the Sykes Rush stuff wasn't funny

Unless you're Mother Teresa, the friend of all mankind (despised by Hitchens, by the way) the joke is funny -- unless Rush is a sacred cow for you.

The joke relies on wordplay and surprise.

The wordplay lies in the two definitions of fail: not to succeed and cease functioning.

The country fails == Obama's plan does not succeed and the country remains in the same sad state that W. left it in.

Rush's kidneys fail == Limbaugh's kidney's cease functioning and he needs dialysis.

The hateful wish in the punchline furnishes the element of surprise.

Note that, because Rush was the first to be hateful, by wishing Obama to fail, the listener does not perceive the punchline to be unfair.

If Limbaugh were not a mean SOB, I agree the joke would not be funny.

Jeremy म्हणाले...

I can't help but notice I haven't heard back from anybody with a review of the White House function/George W. Bush video clip I provided.

No one has any class anymore. Both sides like to make crude jokes abou the other. Hoosier - READ the poll, you idiot.

When 60% say they want us OUT...what bearing does it have on some politician saying something as stupid as that we should stay there for 100 years???

Here's a backdrop of McCain's comments:

During a town hall meeting in Derry, New Hampshire:

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told a crowd of roughly two hundred people that it “would be fine with” him if the U.S. military stayed in Iraq for “a hundred years“:

Q: President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for 50 years — (cut off by McCain)

McCAIN: Make it a hundred.

Q: Is that … (cut off)

McCAIN: We’ve been in South Korea … we’ve been in Japan for 60 years. We’ve been in South Korea 50 years or so. That would be fine with me. As long as Americans …

Q: [tries to say something]

McCAIN: As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed. That’s fine with me, I hope that would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where Al Queada is training and equipping and recruiting and motivating people every single day.

Then...the complete flip-flop-flip:

While previously saying the Korea model was “exactly” the right idea for Iraq, in late November, he abandoned it on PBS’ Charlie Rose Show:

ROSE: Do you think that this — Korea, South Korea is an analogy of where Iraq might be, not in terms of their economic success but in terms of an American presence over the next, say, 20, 25 years, that we will have a significant amount of troops there?

MCCAIN: I don’t think so.

ROSE: Even if there are no casualties?

MCCAIN: No. But I can see an American presence for a while. But eventually I think because of the nature of the society in Iraq and the religious aspects of it that America eventually withdraws.

NOTE: "America eventually withdraws."

Your reading comprehension is low. From your link, Rush's words:

"I'm not talking about search-and-destroy, but I've been listening to Barack Obama for a year-and-a-half. I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he has stated them. I don't want them to succeed.

If I wanted Obama to succeed, I'd be happy the Republicans have laid down. And I would be encouraging Republicans to lay down and support him. Look, what he's talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don't want this to work. So I'm thinking of replying to the guy, "Okay, I'll send you a response, but I don't need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails." (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here's the point. Everybody thinks it's outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, "Oh, you can't do that." Why not? Why is it any different, what's new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what's gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it? I don't care what the Drive-By story is. I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: "Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails." Somebody's gotta say it."

I would point to Micheal Moore hopeing for a "1000 Mogadeshus" when we invaded Iraq. Yeah, that is one person and it is true that most people left or right don't celebrate casualties, at least not publicly. But, no one on the left that I know of ever called Moore out for that statement and he still was a guest of honor at the 04 DNC.

Yes you are right, the left, for the most part did not celbrate casualties. But it defies credulity to claim that they didn't want Bush to fail. But now anyone who wishes the same for BO is horrible and beyond polite company. Yeah right.

I don't think that "roasts" are funny. They almost never are. Maybe some of those that Dean Martin used to do were funny. They seem like an excuse to be mean for the sake of being mean, with an excuse.

Isn't there a SpongeBob Squarepants episode about humor at the expense of others? Maybe everyone should watch that.

Everyone should be able to laugh at him or herself. Obama seemed to manage it with his own contribution.

Now, Hitchens might be perfectly correct that someone didn't explain the "rules" to Sykes. (And maybe Obama's writers understood the rules.) But who ever complains after a "roast" that their feelings were hurt? It's against the rules to complain *because* it's a roast. Yet I recall a highly awarded author Guest of Honor at a convention talking about how devastated she was when the person announcing her award (the highest award in the genre, and she not knowing she was the one who got it) who made "gentle fun" of her as part of the announcement, and everyone laughing and how she was nearly destroyed.

But it's never the joker's fault, it's the fault of the victim. Always.

Who will be blamed if the writer lady made a scene, cried, or fled the convention because she couldn't face those who laughed at her expense? She would be blamed.

I don't think that "it was a joke" is EVER an excuse.

Saying that it *matters* that what Hitchens said wasn't meant to be a joke, is a implicit admission that the "jokes" were "vile, hateful attacks" disguised as humor.

Jeremy म्हणाले...

She wasn't literally hoping or praying for the man to die a "painful and lingering death."

Good lord...we have people standing outside funerals for gay Americans...screaming for them to burn in hell...and you're upset over this silly ass joke??

Watch this and tell me how funny it is:

That is pure sophestry. The Waynesboro Baptist Church stands out in front of soldiers funerals and says they got what was coming to them. I would gladly join you in burning the place down. But no one invited them to speak at a Presidential event. Just because there are more offensive people in the world, doesn't make Sykes any less offensive.

John said..."...Yeah it does. Unless and until progressives are willing to kick such people out of their movement"

You want Wanda thrown out of the Democratic Party? I don't even know if she's a member.

And does this also relate to Ann Coulter?

Glenn Beck?

Rush Limbaugh?

Michael Savage? (He can't even travel to GB)

john म्हणाले...

Jeremy,

Disagree: not a Mercedes; I think it would be a Volvo 180DL, that leaks and burns oil. And there is no room for Jen in the back seat anyway, because that is where you keep all your clothes. You are parked in back of Starbucks to get the wifi.

Agree: you are probably naked.

John म्हणाले...

"John said..."...Yeah it does. Unless and until progressives are willing to kick such people out of their movement"

No. I mean the people holding the signs about soldiers shooting their officers. Not Wanda Sykes. She is just a harmless boring twat not worth being kicked out of anything.

Jeremy म्हणाले...

John - "But no one invited them to speak at a Presidential event."

Wanda Sykes is a comic.

She makes her living doing comedy.

Yes, she was invited. Just as Dennis Miller is invited to such functions, and he says all kinds of stuff that liberals hate.

So fucking what??

And by the way, your buddy Rush, said that anybody doing illegal drugs should go to prison...right up until he got caught doing illegal drugs. (Hypocrisy?)

Or how about this nice comment from your hero:

"Obama is holding his own against both of them [Bill and Hillary Clinton], doing more than his share of the 'spadework,' maybe even gaining ground at the moment, using not only the spade, ladies and gentlemen. But when he finishes with the spade in the garden of corruption planted by the Clintons, he turns to the hoe."

This is the man you're so upset about being denigrated by Wanda Sykes??

Get real.

John म्हणाले...

"Michael Savage? (He can't even travel to GB)"

So you support denying entry of people based on their exercise of free speech? I guess you were A OK when tried to keep Cat Stevens out of the country. You can't be that stupid. GB is a soft totalitarian state with no right to free speech. Is that what you want the US to be?

Jeremy म्हणाले...

John said..."No. I mean the people holding the signs about soldiers shooting their officers."

Who are those people?

I saw no link, identification or context.

Jen म्हणाले...

Holy crap. You people are on a tare. Sorry, Jeremy, I wasn't here. I stepped out to get an organic free trade non-fat one splenda latte.

Your reefer post was very very funny btw.

I think that it is interesting that when I say that no decent human being would wish a casualty of war, everyone gets all worked up about LEFT/RIGHT who said what, etc. etc. I DID NOT say "no decent democrat." or conversely, "no decent conservative."

I said decent. human. being.

Also, the kidney comment was a J-O-K-E! A joke! In the context of a comedy. Ahhh, but we've been there before.

Jen म्हणाले...

I think I prefer John to john. But I'm not sure yet.

What kind of rabbit hole is this?

I don't see anything offensive about that. That is not wishing death on anyone. It is not advocating violance.

The bottomline is that you don't beleive in free expression or free speech. If you are upset about that and think that that comment means Rush Limbaugh has no right to appear in public, you are just a petty oppressor.

Further, even if Rush is as awful as you beleive, who cares? That doesn't make Sykes any better for wishing his death. You seem to think that just becuase you don't like someone, it is perfectly okay to say anything about them no matter how horrible.

Dust Bunny Queen म्हणाले...

I think that Jen and Jeremy need to get a better understanding of what constitutes a joke.

Then again, we already know that most liberals don't have much of a sense of humour.

Blogger John said..."So you support denying entry of people based on their exercise of free speech?"

I'm sorry to inform you of this, but GB is GB and they have their own set of laws, rules and sense of what they want in their country. I guarantee you Homeland Security has a long list of those they will not allow into America, also based on whatever criteria they deem correct.

They banned Savage and others for out and out "hate speech" they felt was beyond the pale.

John म्हणाले...

"Also, the kidney comment was a J-O-K-E! A joke! In the context of a comedy. Ahhh, but we've been there before."

Of course it was a joke. It was a bad one. Just like what the idiotic comment Don Imus made about the Rutgers basketball team or the comment that Jimmy the Greek made about black athletes. The reactions to those were over the top and the reaction by some here is over the top. The answer is not to be angry but just not laugh and ignore it. I wish Conservatives hadn't ever said anything. Sykes speaks for herself. She is a lousy commediane who made an unfunny joke. In the end, it really doesn't matter.

that is begging the question. Of course they can do it, you nitwit. They are a sovereign country. The question is do you support them in doing it? You say "he can't get into GB" like it is a good thing. Well is it? Or does their denial say worse things about GB than it does about Savage?

Jeremy म्हणाले...

Dust Bunny Queen said..."I think that Jen and Jeremy need to get a better understanding of what constitutes a joke."

No, it's YOU who needs to understand the subjectivity of humor.

What one thinks is funny another does not.

It doesn't make it funny or not funny.

Do you like every movie, TV show, joke or book everybody you know likes?

Do you like violent films? Many do.

How about gay-themed films? Like them...ALL of them?

And I notice you didn't respond to the video link I provided, of Bush making fun of not finding any WMD...as if that would be hilarious to the families of the American soldiers who gave their lives.

Now what kind of joke is that??

john म्हणाले...

Jeremy -

The "shoot thier officers" photo was from an "anti-war" protest in San Francisco. An of course the invitation to put a sniper round through Bush's skull was from CBS.

So you're right, we don't know anything about the politics of those folks. My bad.

Oh, look ! It's the Jen and Jeremy show!

Jeremy म्हणाले...

John - "The question is do you support them in doing it?"

In the case of Savage I lean towards supporting it.

He's the most vile and hateful radio host I've ever heard.

Do you listen to him? Do you like what he says?

Do you think when he says the Koran is a "book of hate" that that might upset any of the billion Muslims in the world?

How about the Muslims that constitute such a large percentage of European cities? Think that played into their decision?

Jeremy म्हणाले...

john - I never said I support any of what you describe, I merely asked where it came from.

What is your point?

I have another John asking if I support Savage being banned from GB...and you saying we should...do what to these people you describe?

Ban them from America?

Fine them?

Do whatever...their actions are downright stupid.

Jen म्हणाले...

But ya it's just us eeeeeevil Althousers on the RIght who see him that way.

chickenlittle-

You're right-the only time I get caught up in it is when he tries to do what the Democrats as a whole are doing-co-opt the military as their next victim class.

I've watched them challenge every vote of the guys at Eglin AFB who were voting by absentee ballot-guys that were sitting over in the DMZ in Korea.

They challenged every damn ballot enlisted, officer it didn't matter and they did that before they were even opened because they knew how they were voting.

The polling station on Eglin AFB the largest air base in the free world- voted by some 80% that year for the Republicans and the next election I think they hit significantly higher numbers-the stats are hard to dig up these days at the Okaloosa county website-but I remember being astounded by the results.

I guess I should just let him spew his stuff and let this be one more place were that agenda gets furthered.

I think I do my best-but that happens to be my Achilles' heel. Thanks for the advice chickenlittle I"ll try to do better.

Jeremy म्हणाले...

John - "Of course it was a joke. It was a bad one."

There ya go.

One person says it was a bad joke...another would say it was a good joke.

But to make it into the insanit we see here is ridiculous...and within a few days...it'll be gone and forgotten. (Except of course, for Rush, he'll use it for months on end...and that's his prerogative...as an "entertainer.")

Of course, many on the left wanted Bush to fail and worked hard to get it. They partly got their wish and it resulted in success for their party and candidate. I doubt many on the left would have chosen Bush to have ended his administration with 80% approval ratings even if it meant getting a healthy economy out of it.

If I had a neighbor who was trying to convince everyone to rob the rich people in the next neighborhood. I would want him to fail, even if it meant my poor neighbors stay poor temporarily. The alternative is that robbery becomes a way of life and that has no future.

I want Obama to fail and never get his policies implemented and the country to recover anyway, like it always has.

I was unsober in Aspen when some friends and I first caught a Wanda Sykes special on cable early in the AM about six years ago. I thought she was hilarious.

I couldn't even watch this one long enough to get to the ugly bit.

The whole thing was just...awkward. From the little I saw she was straining. No one knew how far she could go or whether or not to laugh. Obama looked like he was trying to be a good host more than anything - buffer the situation at hand.

Stopped the youtube before it got to the main event. I'm a canary in the coal mine when it comes to this sort of thing. Don't enjoy gawking.

All you decent human beings on the left would never wish death on someone they disagreed with , or even wish failure on their elected leaders. Would you?

Let's take up the second half of that statement first. I would say it did not stand for the proposition asserted. The linked photo appeared on the Craig Kilborn show following W.'s nomination as a candidate for President in 2000.

Was Craig Kilborn a leftist? In my experience, fratboy assholes like him are usually Republican.

Further, at that point, Governor Bush was the elected leader of Texas only. Non-Texans did not owe him any more respect than Americans owe, say, Sarkozy.

Taking up the first half of the statement, we see a picture of two anarchists holding a banner in a protest before the US invasion of Iraq. The banner wished harm on our military leaders.

Again, the reference does not support the proposition asserted. The banner carriers were not leftists but anarchists. The US was still at peace, so there was no question of lack of supporting our troops or their officers. Officers do not determine which war they will fight, so there can be no disagreement between them and any Americans, only between Americans and their elected leaders.

srfwotb म्हणाले...

Having said all that I find it absurd this impulse to keep track of which professional talking head has denounced what in the strongest possible terms.

It's like watching ants engaged in a rectitude pissing contest. Are they really that important? Do they really have that much sway as "opinion-makers" that it matters how they respond to every minute moral dilemma?

John म्हणाले...

Apparently you either didn't notice or ignored the link to the 2007 poll that found that 19% of self identified Democrats at that time thought that the US losing the war in Iraq would be a good thing. Again, it is just one poll, but even if it is 14% off in the right direction, one in twenty self identified Democrats, not anarchists but Democrats, were actively hoping for the US to lose in Iraq.

Let's not rewrite history. We all lived it and we all know the truth that a significant number of Democrats wanted the US to fail in Iraq. Not all but certainly a sizable minority.

If you haven't heard him your argument is diminished.

Believe me, I'm all for the 1st Amendment, but I'm also against people screaming fire in a crowded room.

I'm also against people threatening to kill Americans or commit terrorists acts...and you and I both know Homeland Security would not allow anybody from another country to enter if they heard those "expressions of speech."
