I don't understand. Why would you need to knit duct tape?
How does one knit with duct tape? Wouldn't it keep sticking to the needles? Just asking.
Ha, Peter, beat you to it.
Actually, it's pretty cool what she did. I bet that dress is heavy, though.
Chewing gum has to be one of man's strangest inventions.
Non-nutritional chewing of an indigestible rubbery wad that tastes vaguely of mint.
No nicotine?
No chocolate?
What is it for?
Plus, it sticks to your ribs for what? Seven years?
Haha, they called it "news."
In August of 2001, the biggest story the mainstream media could come up with was a couple of shark attacks.
With the prom dress story you don't get a good look at the dress or a chance to see the knitting technique. And with the suit story you never find out if the guy was able to find steady work or what people thought of his look.
It was like they only want headlines but could care less about the story. Damn them!
Here's a good picture of the dress.
I hpe she didn't use Juicy Fruit, though, 'cause that would be gross.
mmmm, Juicy Fruit
Thanks Pogo, but that's not the dress.
Now I'm starting to get even more pissed, because looking for pictures I find there are tons of people who make prom dresses out of duct tape! Duck brand duct tape even gives out a scholarship for this type of thing (here is a gallery of winners).
And this is actually a CBS story! The CBS reporter explains that the dress was for a scholarship competition. CNN couldn't give you that information because they were just recycling the story.
Duct tape: it's what's for supper!
Chewing gum fanatics can end up with an intestinal stone that forms around the indigestible gunk. Happy chewing!
Rats, Jason. Whodas thunk Doublemint dresses encompassed an entire genre?
I have never made clothing out of wastepaper, but I have made mountains out of molehills.
And my work on my character would qualify as a silk purse out of a sow's ear, once complete, although at present it seems more like burlap.
Take two rolls, put sticky side to sticky side, cut into 1/4 to 3/8 inch wide strips and start knitting. Me, I'd crochet to work in some lacey effects that would look nice in a prom dress.
Move along these are not the news droids you're looking for.
Christy, it looks like she did just that -- the full-length skirt was some kind of openwork, either knitted or crocheted (you can pretty much do anything with knitting that you can with crochet, although some things are lot more difficult to accomplish). She also rolled rosebuds which she appliqued over the lace. It was actually pretty nice, considering the color choices she had to work with.
The "Stuck at the Prom" site is awesome, but I think Amanda is right, it doesn't look as if anyone else has ever knit with the stuff.
As for her technique, it looked as if she was scoring the tape into thin strips and then rolling it into a tight tube, which she then wound into skeins.
Using duct tape to make a dress, is a violation of some kind of man law.
So "guy" is now CNN style for "man?" The deterioration of the language has accelerated.
The most my daughter did with duct tape was a messenger bag and a wallet.
I am so not showing her the prom dress competition web site.

Duct tape is for girls; real men use Gorilla tape.
