I don't think Jezebelle writers understand how an interraction between a man and a women can be anything but one in control over the other. That's their story and they are sticking to it. The male commenters on this blog are very pleased by our Professor's happiness. Only a certain Maxine takes the negative view of everything. Love conquers all.
Some people are so immersed in the world of critique and the blood sport of one-upsmanship that they just done know how or when to stop and connect on a different level.
If this is how they treat their peers, a blogger would be well advised not to have them on a jury.
To be honest, and I mean no disrespect, but this was one of the first things that came to mind when I heard about the engagement (for which I have nothing but the best of wishes):
Well, I'm a male, and I like the whole story and have been re-telling it here and there. In particular, my wife and my mother think it's sweet. It's not quite a chick flick, because it has a man co-starring in a role that isn't entirely two-dimensional.
I've long thought that many women (and men, too) have no idea how romantic good men are in their hearts. I've been falling in love since I was three years old, and I can't imagine life without my wife of eighteen years.
Don't you just love how she has to distance herself from your politics before she says anything nice about you? ( Not that she probably knows what your politics are.) That says to me that she knows full well that she lives in a group think world where even talking with outsiders will get her excluded from the kewl kid's lunch table.
Professor and Meade, they sure are jealous of you, aren't they?
@Meade, you reminded me of something I saw about a thousand years ago in Mad magazine -- a woman introduces her boyfriend as "he's going to be my finance, I mean my fiance."
Hmm, could sweet little Jezebel have had a Freudian slip?
May the both of you live happily ever after -- after taxes, that is.
Men freaking? Not the male commentors on this blog.
I think the author is talking about male bloggers, and misunderstands. The "freaking out" has come from Lefty bloggers who hate Ann because she doesn't always toe the Party line. She'll always be a heretic to them.
Professor and Meade, they sure are jealous of you, aren't they?
Sums it all up right there.
And I find it odd that self-described "feminists" assume the male half of a heterosexual couple should be providing for the female. I know they're too young to have seen the whole "wives contribute value to the household through their unpaid work" discussion in the 60s and 70s, but surely in all their gender-neutralizing and lobbying for gay marriage and whatnot, it should have occurred to them that partners take care of each other in myriad facets, and finances are but one.
The Jezebel article seemed supportive of blog-enabled romance to me. The only targets of criticism were male h8ers like Pandagon. And they pointed out that their support for the romAnnce did not come from sympathy with her politics.
I think the real storyline is missed by many (yet the New York Times got it).
Meade isn't marrying a blogger. He's marrying an artist.
Artists are somewhat monstrous creatures, but not all are emotional Picassos. It may seem that the artist gets to air her story in a way the artist's spouse does not. But that public story isn't the only story. It may indeed by an invention.
Given that Meade is the wry, eloquent Robert Browning of the pair, I imagine he's safely grounded in his own tale.
Which is presumptuous for me to opine about, of course. Mazel tov.
The subtext of the jezeskank article is the usual Woman Victim Of Men/Double Standard.
The jezeskanks basically hate Althouse but still manage partially support her when they can position her as a Victim of The White Man.
Ironically the only people how seem upset with this Meade -Althouse romance are a couple of homos and some skanky young White feminists.
Everybody else is either happy for her or protective of her because they are concerned about the genuine intentions of this Cincinnati riverboat gambler, alleged gardener, possible con artist/ladykiller character who goes by the alias of one Lawrence Meade.
Nothing wrong with being both supportive but cautious.
And I find it odd that self-described "feminists" assume the male half of a heterosexual couple should be providing for the female.
Did the commenters at Jezebel say anything about the male half providing financial support? Or are you just assuming that based on Big Mike's comment on a "Freudian" typo? Talk about group think!
I don't see any transference problems. It's not like a therapist/pt, President/intern thing. The blogstress is half queen bee in her hive, but the other half is Alice's queen of hearts who can be blown away with the click of one finger snapping.....Also the class thing seems overdone. Too many readers have read too many 19th century novels. The gradations of class between the middle and upper middle class are as imperceptible as the gradations of religious feelings between atheists and agnostics. She's not a Supreme Court Justice; he's not a lettuce picker.....I like the gardener/academic contrast though. He grows the roses; she supplies the latticework. He spreads the manure; she covers it with dust. There's a story there.
@Beth, typos can be very revealing sometimes. You never can tell.
But please pardon me if I point out that there isn't a whole lot of group-think going among Professor Althouse's commenters. If you want group-think, may I recommend Ezra Klein?
I find this hilarious. The idea that the Lady Althouse is in a dominant position because she has the will and energy to have a blog and the good Mr. Meade does not, preposterous! Truth to power speaks and says that no one knows but the good Lady and her Gentleman. As for their respective positions in the world, only they know. Some people seem to look at him as a man "below" her position. For all anyone knows, he may be a very accomplised in his field. All I can say, again,is that love after 50 is wonderful! The best to you both and I hope you will be very happy.

..........
Oh, who cares.
"...her financé Laurence Meade."
I was a financé. That was before the big financial bubblé burst.
They told me that if we would elect Barack Obama, we would all get bailouts and become gardeners and live happily ever after. AND THEY WERE RIGHT!
Nice Instapundit reset.

"Who's on Top?" is a juicier yarn than "People are just happy together."

I bet Sully has not apologized.

Little Britain on YouTube
What I mean to say is that my thoughts had little to do with gender, but more about power dynamics.

Leave it to bloggers to think that blogging puts someone in a position of de facto dominance.

Jezebel.com is the Land of Rancid Skanks. What a horrible group of disgusting hags congregate around that boiling cauldron of hate.
She's a fucking asshole. See her lovely posts on rape.

It's hilarious to read jdeeripper lecturing other commenters on their rhetoric.

The comments there also seem supportive. Give it up -- the Jezebelians support Professor Althouse. That straw man won't stand.

The presumed powerful, dominant position is that of the blogger feminist.
They feel it's been ruined by the recent spectacular Althouse glow.
That there may be a feminist making the case for falling in love is something of a threat.
Leave it to bloggers to think that blogging puts someone in a position of de facto dominance.
They're as bad as journalists!! Well, not all of them.... : )
"financé" made me wonder if she's really Maxine.
Meade, why isn't your name Lawrence?

I can't help but picture some of the snarking male bloggers talking to women like this:
"Yeah, I blog. I'm dominate like that."
"I have a blog. Way alpha, I know."
"I'm the blogger in this relationship! Now fetch me my slippers!"
LOL Freeman.
"Who's the blogger here?"
"I'm not trying to be bossy, it's just that I blog."
I find this hilarious. The idea that the Lady Althouse is in a dominant position because she has the will and energy to have a blog and the good Mr. Meade does not, preposterous! From an article on Jezebel about Althouse+Meade:
"However, Althouse and Meade do seem pretty damn happy, so we're looking for suggestions over here. Maybe we're going at our lives all wrong!"
Love conquers all.
When I think of Meade, I think of my brother-in-law, an autodidact of the best kind. To heck with the degrees, let's figure this out.
