It was a long journey.

(Thanks to Bill Korte for sending me this picture of Meade. It's really him. In 2005.)

Let's see.

2005.

You were barely a twinkle in his eye then, Prof.

Tex म्हणाले...

Shorts?

An Edjamikated Redneck म्हणाले...

Yeah, that looks like him.

under the helmet and glassess and...

Shorts?!?!?!

Well, I guess bike riding is an athletic endeavor, so shorts are allowable under rule 2, clause (a)(ii) of the Althouse shorts policy.

But then, that looks like Alaska...

DaLawGiver म्हणाले...

What river is that? Great pic, love the composition.

DaLawGiver म्हणाले...

I don't think it's Alaska. Most rivers there are braided and the mosquitoes would kill you if you wore shorts.

अनामित म्हणाले...

You know, there was a lot of lamentation among the male commenters that Althouse was going off the market. Let me tell you, Althouse, there are a LOT of female commenters who are lamenting the loss of our beloved Meade.

Put me in the Carl Dean fan club. Better yet: let me buy a "Team Meade" t-shirt.

Palladian म्हणाले...

Rowr. Nice arms. Good shoulders.

Bissage म्हणाले...

Nice guy . . .

and a stud.

Good for him!

Hoosier Daddy म्हणाले...

I didn't know you were a mountain biker Meade. What kind of bike is that? Do you do any road riding?

The rule of Lemnity म्हणाले...

My version of a data point…

Meade rides a bike.
Bush rode a bike.
Meade voted for Bush.. and may survive up two Althousian blast ;)

Ralph L म्हणाले...

What's Ezra Klein going to say when the future Mr. Althouse appears in blackface on your blog? And shouldn't the gloves be white?

Paul म्हणाले...

Mountain biking rules! There's no better way to explore the wilderness, get fit, develop technical riding skills, and experience the joy of riding tight single track in the woods and mountains.

You would do well to take up the sport with hubby.

David म्हणाले...

Meade.
Stud.
They rhyme.

lohwoman म्हणाले...

Thanks for the Bill Korte clue. Meade's first name is ironic.

William म्हणाले...

No, no Frodo. You were supposed to take the ring to the Crack of Doom, not the other way around.

paul a'barge म्हणाले...

shorts

Richard Dolan म्हणाले...

The Meade-Althouse hook-up may be giving rise to inspiration in strange places. On the Becker-Posner blog, the most recent post deals with Internet mating (both for romance and job hunting). Along the way Judge Posner offers this gem:

"My guess would be, therefore, that the demand for Internet marriage screening would be less among students and among young workers in workplaces that have a fairly even balance of men and women, and greater among persons who are not in such advantageous situations and among persons who have high opportunity costs of time, like successful businessmen and professionals. It should also be greater among persons who have idiosyncratic or minority tastes."

He doesn't discuss Internet marriage screening via blog post-and-comment, and neither of them mentions the Meade-Althouse engagement. But otherwise he seems to be describing what's just happened here, sort of.

Is it just spring or is there something in that midwestern water that's giving rise to all this interest in matchmaking?

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Have you posted that before? It seems very familiar.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

(that was a question for Richard Dolan, by the way)

Richard Dolan म्हणाले...

MM: No, just noticed it today.

BJM म्हणाले...

Meade obviously has determination and stamina, good qualities in a mate.

The Dude म्हणाले...

I would guess British Columbia.

And clearly, if you can turn the pedals over in terrain like that, you will never fit into green jeans such as those pictured. Riding off road, up hill requires quadriceps, which the GJ guy lacks.

Maxine - out of her depth since pre-school.

JAL म्हणाले...

Mmm. I was thinking BC also, but not being well informed -- or even un-well informed -- about geology I am not sure the "mountains" fit.

Chennaul म्हणाले...

Oh come on!

Never mind Meade-

Where the hell is that?

Meade is but a blight upon the beauty.

{heh..}

Could it be the Green River area of Oregon?

अनामित म्हणाले...

Looks like the Columbia River Gorge to me.

I found an old video of Meade formerly known as "Mr. Fix it".

JAL म्हणाले...

Was the long journey uphill both ways?

The Dude म्हणाले...

Ok, I referred to a comment made by M*x*n* and now either it is gone or I am in the wrong thread.

As long as housekeeping is taking place, check the "Love in the Time of Commenters" thread - it needs some cleaning.

Zo man - that is a nice place to ride. I have ridden all over the Cascades and CRG, but somehow missed that spot. Or maybe I rode it but kept my eyes on the trail lest I plummet to my demise, thereby missing the view.

Please don't tell us that is Ohio or some such...

Trooper York म्हणाले...

If I were a different kind of commenter I would ask if we are going to be treated to more pictures of Meade riding things.

But that would be wrong.

NotWhoIUsedtoBe म्हणाले...

Eh, shorts and all that.

This whole this is like a story. Reality isn't supposed to work out this well. It's messy and doesn't follow a narrative.

Maybe I need to rethink my view of the world.

Heh. The internet is good for something.

kjbe म्हणाले...

Yeah, I'd say the Columbia Gorge. Looks like a ton of fun, too.

Chennaul म्हणाले...

What about the environment?!?!?1!

He's leaving tire tracks everywhere-and-

Has he brought a Pringles can?

Or is he droppin' it like Titus!?!?

ricpic म्हणाले...

Narrow the path, and torturous too,
The striver takes the wide world through.

amba म्हणाले...

I'm with Madawaskan. Meade is as Meade does, but WHERE IS THAT???

The Elder म्हणाले...

"WHERE IS THAT???"

I'm guessing Colorado.

But what do I know?

Meade म्हणाले...

What do you know?

Oh Brother, what don't you know?

Durango, Colorado.

The Elder म्हणाले...

I must confess. I had a clue.

Meade म्हणाले...

Ha! Wedding or not - you'll always be best man.

KLDAVIS म्हणाले...

I thought that looked kind of familiar. I walked up that mountain (or one very nearby) when I was 6 years old. I asked my mom if bears would eat me before I died if I just gave up and sat down. She said yes, which kept me going.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Just so I don't waste my "Team Meade" t-shirt, let me ask this:

Is Elder on or off the market?

The Elder म्हणाले...

Off. Very, very off.
