Somebody tell Barack Obama. If your daughters really are allergic to dogs, they're allergic to the dander, the skin cells, which the dog has whether he sheds or not...
... whether he has hair or not.

That does it. Now it becomes a national tragedy. Oh the enormity of it all!
I said he needed to withdraw and come back and ask for the job after he and his wife finished raising their children but did anyone listen to me? No. You all had to have your messiah, your President Charisma. But all you've done is break a little girl's heart.
Way to go, people.
While it is certainly true that dog skin cells (and saliva) are the problem, some breeds of dog shed a lot less dead skin than others. So it is still possible for a given breed of dog to be hypoallergenic, depending upon the severity of the person's allergies. A given dog might not give off enough dander to pose a significant problem.
Is it different dander for dogs than for cats? Because we have dogs, but cats are like kryptonite to me.
This cruel twist of fate can only reinforce the global perception that events are overtaking this beleaguered young presidency at a velocity never before witnessed in White House history. Hope lost, a dream deferred, and with it, the ship of state - foundering on the shoals of miasma and malaise.
When it comes to animal dander, cats, rodents, and lagomorphs (e.g. rabbits) tend to push the allergy needle into the red. If you're allergic to one, you're likely to be allergic to the others.
Dogs are far less bothersome.
Perhaps the first, but certainly not the last, promise Obama will break.
After all, the guy promised 95% of America a "puppy" to get elected.
Blah blah blah. More wisdom from a toucher of one part of the elephant, adverse to taking into account a bigger picture, and more reporting (and comment from) those who if they don't necessarily despise the concept of continuum, certainly don't understand it, much less respect it.
(Althouse: This comment is not directed at your post qua post.)
My advice: Get your kid the dog that was promised. Let the kid pick. Screw everybody else. Sheesh. I realize that when people voted, they were voting as if their vote determined everything in the whole wide world, and some of them were even dumb enough to believe that gave them massive control--but over a family's kids' pet??
I say ignore them for the silly people they are. And if they're associations or lobbyists or whatever to boot, I say fart in their general direction as you do so.
What utter, unmitigated nonsense, this whole "issue" is: a naked emperor if ever I saw one.
Pfooeyghhhyplf.
Yikes! I got a Google non-service notice--I didn't intend to double-post.
At first I thought reader_iam had mispelled "Pfooeyghhhyplf."
That's why there was a double post.
No?
There will always be a reason why Obama can't come through.
First it was the staffer's fault, then the advisor, then the flunkie, then the interviewer, then the listener, now it's the kids histamine ...
Always something.
Isn't there a Japanese robot dog available that would make everyone happy?
I mean--dog almighty! What IS it with people who think or/and believe there's so much in the world that must be changed, and changed radically, and changed this very minute (by dog, or by God: whatever) ...
... and who think or/and believe all that so with so much intensity that
... they expend that energy on
... the selection of a pet, by a single family, first-family-elect or no?
Sorry, but that's nuts. Far more important, it's wasteful.

JAL, I free admit that I was at a loss at how to illustrate in mere letters a "fart in the general direction of," and so that's what a came up with, on the fly.
More, I agree that mine was a lame attempt, and that there are a whole number of folks here who are better at that sort of thing.
Fill that breech, I say! And bless you.
Stand up on your hind legs and "Speak woof to power"!
reader, you're right on the money... who does this dog belong to? Malia and Sasha? If so, let them have what they want.
If it belongs to "the people" God and Dog help us.
and... well, darnit, the pictured dog is ugly. Sorry if he belongs to you. Whoever you are.
Muslims generally don't like dogs.
Good excuse to say your kid is allergic to them.
jdeeripper: Only most dogs.
Salukis are considered just fine by even the most conservative of Muslims.
I thought we had a right to privacy, and that people had no right to butt into the doghouse.
If Obama picks a Saluki it will be perfect.
I am allergic and my mom got a poodle with hope that I would not have a problem. It was ok if I did not touch the dog at all but if I pet him, then I would have the same reaction as any other dog. The difference was that there was not as much hair all over the house. I bet the Obama girls will want to play with the dog.
Depending on the severity of the allergic reaction, a kid, with the proper medication, will (as is my experience) put up with a bit of inconvenient sniffly and sneezing. As it's been said, and as I've heard, poodles may work, but these hairless dogs (and cats) don't work for me.
ron s a: Note that the article points out that saliva is a source of allergens, then consider that cats lick themselves much much more than dogs do,
Grooming, including weekly bathing, is the key. My allergies act up in houses with short haired dogs, not long haired ones. I'd guess that dander is trapped in the long hair but is shed freely from the shorthairs.
The kids' rooms should have no carpets, curtains, or heavy wallpaper. They can have throw rugs that are washed once a week, along with the bedding.
Good gravy. I thought the campaign ended and the election won. But it seems the cuteness campaign continues.
Kennedy playbook redux? Can't wait for touch football, Obama in a rocking chair, cute kids underneath the oval office desk ........
Why is there a picture of Rachel Maddow in this post?
Shouldn't you move it up one thread?
Perhaps he'll get some sort of vicious wolf hound type dog that kills cats (and reporters) for fun. That would be a hoot.
My boss's kid is pretty allergic but is able to tolerate a tibetan terrier.

Apparently they are pretty friendly - Portugese Water Dogs are also recommended as being less allergy-aggrvating.
Oh please, Obama hasn't said that he's not getting a dog for his kids.
He's going to be living in a huge house with lots of paid housekeepers who can vacuum the heck out of the whole place daily with hepafilters on the vac and the non-shedding dog they get can have frequent baths and brushing on not sleep on the allergic kid's bed.
Unless her allergies are so bad that she can't visit other people with dogs in their homes, and they'd know if it was that bad, she's going to be fine.
My only question is if they get a dog are they going to send it to a public obedience school or one of those fancy private ones?
That will set the tone for the whole administration.
Walter: I'd bet on a private tutor, myself, you silly boy.
You know, the kind that makes house calls.
one friend has a poodle and another a Portuguese Water Dog -- their kids are not allergic to thse dogs though they are to others.
dogs were here first I think....so we really have hyperallergetic people. Every ask the dog? Why do dogs scratch? humans? republicans?
I think the Obamas should get a pit bull and name it "Liipstick."
I'm sure it's pointless to point this out, and of course, I'm sure the experts are right, but people with dog allergies are less likely to have those allergies react to dogs with hair (as opposed to fur), and less fur (dogs without a double coat). I don't know why, but I do know that I have a VERY allergic husband, and two dogs that don't give him any problems. My guess is that dogs that shed more spread more dander around than dogs that shed less. So practically speaking, they are hypoallergenic, even if scientifically, they're not.
