Renegade, Renaissance, Rosebud, Radiance.

Those are the Secret Service code names for the Obama family.

I really don't think it's appropriate for the Secret Service to call one of Obama's daughters Marion Davies' clitoris.

I wonder if this means Michelle calls Barack's member "Renegade" and Barack call Michelle's lady parts "Renaissance"?

Those were my thoughts too, exactly. I mean, really, is the Secret Service illiterate in pop culture or is it relying on our pop culture illiteracy?

All those R's will certainly be confusing especially over radio.

"Renaissance is on the move. I mean Radiance. Wait a sec, which one of those kids is Rosebud again?"
"The older one."
"Check. Wait, which is the older one again?
"Malia."
"Check. And Malia is... Radiance?"
"ROSEBUD!"
"Check."
"Renaissance is on the move."
"Do you mean Rosebud?"
"No, the mother. I was just asking about the kids for later."

Really. Just call him Cochise, call her Mrs. Cochise, and the little ones Chihuahua and Hypoallergenic.

I think Renaissance is having its period."

Will his opponent bellow "I'm John Sidney McCain!!" like Welles did "I'm Charles Foster Kane!!" ?

My vote for Obama's codename would have been "Gatsby".

Will either SA or BC show up on this thread sometime during the early morning hours?

Thanks for the smile today, Ignacio. :D

Like these are the real code names. Maybe we can get Obama's cell phone number if we ask nicely. Who chooses these names?

Totally off-topic, but whenever I see a super-close-up shot like that, I think of that scene in Tootsie when Michael's rehearsing for the soap disguised as Dorothy:

producer: Can you pull back, I'd like to make her look a little more attractive...

cameraman: how do you feel about Cleveland?

Sometimes a rosebud is just a rosebud.

As such things go, there is probably a set method of choosing code names. Having all the same letters, the "R's", is probably something done normally.

I expect that there is a long list of unique words to choose from that aren't used again for anyone else.

Rosebud and Radiance strike me as nice, positive, and very pretty names for the girls. Renaissance is classy. Renegade makes me think that someone showed the list of "R's" to Obama and let him do the choosing. Ugh.

Gatsby is very good.

The names are too similar for talking over phones and mobile devices. That really could lead to a serious problem down the road, perhaps a mortal one.

My God, Gore Vidal is the source of all evil.

Comment on one of the network nightly news (maybe Brian Williams) explained that nowadays, with scambled radio signals, the secret service codenames are now just a fun tradition rather than really a serious matter of security.

I like the names (is new puppy going to be Rover?? Roy Rogers??;)

Current debate is which designer will next First Lady choose for her gown at innogural (sp?) ball. Renaissance reminds me of Camelot; will new First Lady be Jackie Kennedy-type fashion setter? (Might help "stimulate the economy" in clothing industry...)

BTW, on subj of pop culture connections, did Radience bring to anyone's mind one of words used in CHARLOTTE'S WEB to save Wilbur's life (Radiant, from a package of laundry soap)?

Read Newbery Award novel BUD, NOT BUDDY about adventures of orphaned African-American boy in Great Depression; his mother named him BUD, meaning a flower which will bloom.
