This seems completely appropriate to me.

Wow. That was... Um... Really quite terrifically weird. "Buy Countrywide! We mean it, m'aaaaaaaam!"

Simon म्हणाले...

Heh, punk was so silly. /chortle/

Predictably, many of the "Boing Boing" comments are of the "Oh! Woe! Our anti-establishment hero is a slave to Capitalism now!". What nonsense. Here's the best comment over there:

"Oh no. Please, don't bring out the hand-wringing about "Selling out" and "Who is left unsullied by all this horrid capitalism?" That kind of purity is for chubby rock critics and music snobs. Demanding a sort of monastic life, free from the worries of money from one's heroes is just childish.

John Lydon's a living cartoon character, I laughed and watched the ad twice. Good on him and the creators of the ad."

With the bailout bill passing, perhaps this one would be more appropriate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XGJq8wrw5I

Buy your butter from Happy cows, not those frigid Wisconsin hanger queens :)

Morris dancing; now that's funny.

Publius: I thought you were going here.

Is this a famous person?

I'm trying very hard just now not to be one of those educated people who believe silly things. But consider this -- Within the last week or so I read Pratchett's Wintersmith, the plot of which develops from misadventure at a Morris dance, Ngaio Marsh's Death of a Fool, the plot of which is about a murder during a Morris Dance, and now Althouse directs me to a video that includes a Morris Dance. Before this I'd never even heard of a Morris Dance. Synchronicity is scary.

It's better to burn out, than it is to rust....

But rusting can be kind of fun as well.

Be brave Christy. I hope you have read the other two books in the Pratchettt series with Wintersmith. The Wee Free Men is one of his best. I'd read it before and listened to it on audio during a long trip recently. Brilliant.

So, Johnny Rotten sold out after all.

XWL म्हणाले...

Given that the Sex Pistols in essence were begun as a marketing gimmick for Malcolm McLaren's shop, SEX, I don't see how you could accuse a former Pistol of selling out.

Steve Jones remains the cuddliest ex-Pistol, and his Jonesy's Jukebox is the best show over the air on Los Angeles radio.

Christy म्हणाले...

Bob R, I agree. That YA series is my favorite of the Pratchett novels I've read to date.

"to rust unburbished, not to shine in use"

Better doing an ad for Countrywide Mortgage, I would insist.

Leave that level of sell-out to politicians like Sen. Chris Dodd. Unfortunately, Dodd was in a position to sell-out the rest of the country as well.

Wow, I can't believe Simon didn't puke seeing Rik Mayall sell out every last vestige of his subversiveness in a butter ad.

Wait, that was John Lydon.

Like Charles Boyer and Maurice Chevalier, I always got those two confused as a kid.

Cheers,
Victoria

Doesn't UK butter give you mad cow disease?

Just asking.

Early morning TV in the UK is full of quirky pasttimes, hobbies and regional traditions.

Having attended many a country fair repleate with Morris dancing I can attest to enjoying the tradition thoroughly.

However, as an avid gardener my fav is the leek growing competitions hotly pursued in the northern counties. The passion runs so hot that leek vandalism has reared it's ugly head and alas the largest leek & onion competition has fallen victim to the credit crunch and rising fuel prices.
