"But Huckabee, despite an inept last week of campaigning, has forced the Republican party to face the Wal-Mart shoppers that they have long taken advantage of. He’s here. He’s Gomer. And he’s not going away."
Writes Timothy Egan.

Gomer? Gomer? You have lost it! He is Goober!
Is Mr. Egan referring to Go'mer, the ally of Gog, chief of the land of Magog of Ezekiel 38:6?
Is he the Go'-mer who survived the collapse of the Tower of Babel and wandered north speaking his own language, as recounted in Genesis 10:2, 11:1-9?
Is he an undesirable waiting room patient, in medical lingo?
Or he is TV's lovable goofus Private Gomer Pyle, played to perfection by Sylacauga, Alabama's, very own Jim Nabors?
Just another example of lazy, unclear reporting from the NY Times....
ahhh george, calling someone a Gomer is a distinction without a difference from Goober. it is regional and recognized.
And if class war is forbidden int he republican playbook why it called the old "silent sneak" play we remember from childhood.
I don't know if Huckabee has a real chance or not.
But if the Republican Party thinks it can rehydrate a "Reagan mantle" onto some candidate, it's headed for 40 years in the wilderness. Reaganwas great in the past. But the Reagan model is just that: the past.
The railroads went by the wayside by the mid 1900's because they couldn't see around the bend. The Republican Party had better rethink it's "fiscal as moral" leg of it's coalition before more of the middle class leaves it or sits on it's hands.
When a Rush Limbaugh (who's audience is slowly shrinking, particularly in the younger demographic (44 and below) champions the Bush Tax Cuts and the elimination of the Death Tax (both good things), but doesn't spend an ounce of energy on abolishing the middle-class destroying AMT, you can see where his heart lies.
As Peggy Noonan is beginning to recognize in her column in today's Wall Street Journal:
the thing really pushing his (Huckabee's) supporters, is that they believe that what ails America and threatens its continued existence is not economic collapse or jihad, it is our culture.
They have been bruised and offended by the rigid, almost militant secularism and multiculturalism of the public schools; they reject those schools' squalor, in all senses of the word. They believe in God and family and America. They are populist: They don't admire billionaire CEOs, they admire husbands with two jobs who hold the family together for the sake of the kids; they don't need to see the triumph of supply-side thinking, they want to see that suffering woman down the street get the help she needs.
Here's a bet. Copy this down and reread it in 2 years: I predict that Rush will be emphasizing different things than the "Reagan" coalition ( meaning he's adapting to new realities) or he is no longer # 1 in talk radio.

Sittin' by the roadside on a summer's day, Chattin' with my messmates, passing time away, lying in the shadows, underneath the trees--Goodness, how delicious, eating goober peas!
Peas! Peas! Peas! Peas! Eating goober peas!
Goodness, how delicious, eating goober peas!
When a horseman passes, the soldiers have a rule To cry out at their loudest "Mister, here's your mule!" But still another pleasure enchantinger than these is wearing out your grinders, eating goober peas!
Just before the battle, the General hears a row; He says "The Yanks are coming, I hear their rifles now"! He turns around in wonder, and what do you think he sees? The Georgia Militia, eating goober peas!
I think my song had lasted almost long enough! The subject's interesting, but rhymes are mighty rough! I wish this war was over, when free from rags and fleas, We'd kiss our wives and sweethearts and gobble goober peas!
The problem with the Huckster is that he's a phony populist. If he were real populist, I'd support him. His Fair Tax plan is not only is regressive, but also nothing more than cover for his liberal tax/spend policies.
He's with the NYT and the WSJ in supporting Open borders, multiculturalism, and massive legal and illegal immigration. He's no doesn't like labor unions (Except the NEA),and Walmart and Tyson Foods never had a better friend. He's nothing more than a southern fried liberal ala Jimmy Carter.
"But if the Republican Party thinks it can rehydrate a "Reagan mantle" onto some candidate, it's headed for 40 years in the wilderness. Reaganwas great in the past. But the Reagan model is just that: the past."
Nonsense. The problem is the last time anyone assumed the Reagan mantle was in the 80's and his name was Ronald Reagan.
But the Reagan model is just that: the past.
If the Republican Party truly comes to believe that, I doubt I'll ever vote for a Republican again. I doubt a lot of those who currently vote Republican will either.
Huckabee's a redneck Democrat. If I'm going to get stuck with a Democrat I'd just as soon have it be a reasonably intelligent and open-minded one.
Citizen's arrest, citizen's arrest...
