"If this were a wedding, we'd be at the 'speak now or forever hold your peace' part."

"If you're a candidate hoping to get past her, the time for nuance and veiled references has passed."

Weddings... veils...

This woman for President business... it's driving you crazy, isn't it?

Too damned bad! It's too late! Maybe if you act fast... that's what they're saying... because they're political analysts — the quote above is from Steve McMahon, a former advisor to Howard Dean — and they'd like to have some relevance. So they're saying hurry, hurry, hurry... or it will be too late.

But it is too late. She's the Democratic candidate — unless you've got some dramatic new scandal... and even then....

Adjust. Give up. Deal with it. Resign yourself. It will be so much easier if you don't resist.

I think white is ruled out, for the dress.

That twittering sound you hear is all those Democrats out there getting ready to spend the next year ruing it.

For the past 10 months you've given Hillary Clinton all the attention she craves.

Just think, had you never done a single post about her, she might not be such the front runner she is now.

Not a day goes by when Althouse doesn't mention Hillary Clinton.

Trying to get a post about Virginia Tech, or San Diego Wildfires...forget it.

If I didn't know better I'd think you have a secret agenda to get her elected.

Is it sexist for women, or a woman, to support Hillary (primarily) because she's a woman?

Or does the use of that epithet apply only to...MEN?!

Just askin'.

If Hillary is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it?

Will we get to light cigarettes again after this election?

Heywood Rice म्हणाले...

Drudge needs Hillary, Althouse needs Drudge therefore Althouse needs Hillary.

I think you're allowed to annul shotgun weddings.

Here Maxine, in honor of your posts these last few days:

While everyone right and left concedes Hillary's inevitability, nobody right or left honestly likes her. It's not a wedding, it's an especially mercenary marriage of convenience.

Please, get this all decided before the voters can cast their ballots in the primaries. That's the way to ensure that the candidate will appeal to the voters in the general election.

Who would be Hillary's Dick Cheney and Rummy? Because she doesn't know dick about how to end the war in Iraq.

I would bet that to demonstrate her ovaries, she would lead us into invading Iran.

Does this mean that Hillary is at the center of an irresistible vortex?

Or is it that things are so settled that there is no vortex, just Hillary's Village as far as the eye can see?

John Stodder म्हणाले...

Obama's a massive disappointment, and who knows he might rise again.

Edwards, one word. No.

Richardson, what they say about Fred Thompson applies doubly to him. Doesn't want it enough to overcome his basic laziness. Hey who can blame him. I know I'd rather have a beer with him than the others.

The other senators. Vanity project.

The radicals. Too radical.

I'm...okay...with...Hillary. I could even see getting excited about her, sometime next year.

I voted against Al Gore because I thought the Clinton sleaze had to be cut off at the pass. And now I'm ready to vote for Clinton. Only Rudy among the Reeps could tempt me to cross over.

How did Hillary win me over? She grew up. 46 is different from 63. With her ego in check...is there any doubt she's smart enough? Strong enough? Patriotic? No. Is she too much of a socialist? She's a lot less of one than her opponents, and not much more of one than Bush, frankly. But she'll be checked constantly by the very suspicious right wing and congressional Republicans. She will not be elected in any kind of party sweep. An outcome of Hillary as president, and Dems with narrow control of both houses of congress will be just fine. It won't last forever.

Let's not forget Geraldine Ferraro, Mondale's VP 23 years ago. Jay Leno on Letterman in 1984 explains the dangers of having a woman with that kind of power:

Anyone remember how Howard Dean was doing in opinion polling right up until votes began to be cast?

With that said, my question for Ann is this: if we can safely assume that the Dem nominee is Hillary, from what you know thusfar, is there a viable GOP contender other than Giuliani who could attract your vote?

Simon म्हणाले...

Re John Stodder's comments, I can subscribe to a lot of that, except the part about being okay with her winning. Unexpectedly, she has become the best of a field of bad alternatives: she's the only contender for the dem nomination who might in fact be able to do the job for which she's applying. I don't support her, and I don't want her to win, but if we lose next year (far from a sure thing), I'd rather lose to her than any of their other contenders.

If this is a wedding, is Bill playing the role of Vince Vaughn or Owen Wilson?

John Stodder म्हणाले...

I still remember that Jay Leno bit! That was when he was actually pretty funny. Thanks for finding it.

Revenant म्हणाले...

I'd rather lose to her than any of their other contenders.

That about sums it up for me, too. I'd go so far as to say I'd actually prefer her to a number of the Republican candidates (like Paul, Huckabee, and McCain).

Rev - surely to Hunter or Tancredo, too?

Ann -

Do you not see the less than subtle sexism of the "primary-as-wedding" imagery, or do you just like being the kind of feminist who isn't afraid of playing to that sentiment?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Doyle, how on earth did you read my post and not see it as a recognition and critique of the wedding image? I mean, seriously, I'd like a specific explanation of how you could read my post and think that. What about my writing made you imagine that YOU perceived it rather than that I was pointing it out?
