"Finding a $1 million painting in the garbage is very unusual."

A delightful story.

ADDED: Here's a version of the story that includes a photo of the painting. It also says that the woman who found it is getting "an undisclosed percentage" of the sale price along with the $15,000 reward that dates back to the time when the painting was stolen. (Are we sure it was stolen?)

Delightful story, indeed -- a perfect confluence of events.

Let's see.

The reward was $15,000 when the painting was worth (say) $100,000.

Now the painting is worth $1,000,000.

Couldn't the owner summon a little more generosity and give this honest and curious lady a bigger reward?

Then I would find the story delightful.

Right now it's just disappointing.

What a hoot! Makes me wonder what's going through the mind of the person who put it out in the trash.

Maxine,

Dumb question, needs asking: What is the reason for that link?

David,

I thought it was a little depressing too. Especially taking a train to another city, renting a room, watching a TV show, then going back home.

Sometimes I wish I had that time and money, but I never had enough of either to contemplate watching TV in a strange town. I also need to talk to my doorman more often.

Frankly I think the topic sentence is a hoot of an understatment...
"finding....IS VERY UNUSUAL".

One might assume so.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Building a false wall? That seems such an odd thing to do.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

The story could have been better. What if she had taken the painting to Antiques Roadshow when Mr. Uribe was there to do the Missing Masterpieces segment!

George M. Spencer म्हणाले...

A few years back I read a story about a Staten Island (?) deli clerk who had amassed a fortune in antiques and art by roaming the streets of lower Manhattan on weekend mornings. His prize find was a 16th century (?) bed. He found it in the gutter, and it, too, was worth something like a million.

VERY little attention seems to be paid to the idiot who tossed the painting out on the street.

Jeff with one 'f' म्हणाले...

She seems kind of slow. Why pester 20 different people and galleries, and THEN finally ggogle the artist's name?

MadisonMan: The false wall strikes me as quite unusual.

HDHouse: I agree. I wonder if he exists.

Damn! it looks like I picked the wrong day to give up dumpster diving!

Geeze Dave. Someone wants to give me $15K for recovering their stolen property, I would be most grateful.
