"I want religion to stop taking society and the vulnerable for idiots."

Said the artist, Stig Ramsing, explaining the meaning of his sculpture of Christ as a dog with a huge penis. This offends people even in Sweden.

Another Swedish artist, Lars Vilks recently caused a stir with a cartoon depicting Muhammad with a dog's body. No word on the penis size of dog-Muhammad, but Ramsing says, "It is my turn to follow (artist) Lars Vilks and provoke a sensible discussion about religion."

I don't know too much about how Swedes experience about these things, but I think Ramsing saw how much action Vilks got on his artwork and decided to get some too. Minus the death threats.

"Minus the death threats."

Exactly. Much like Kathy Griffin's Emmy rant and the poster for the Folsom Street Fair in San Fransisco mocking the Last Supper, the "edgy" artists only do what they know is safe.

Hardly a courageous act. Islam they leave untouched, because violence follows those who mock of the Religion of Peace.

Given the human tendency to follow those incentives that get rewarded, how long until misguided Christians start responding similarly, with violence? Because violence appears to work, where criticism alone seems only to increase such "artistry".

The word "explaining" has evidently changed its meaning since the last time I saw it used.

Indeed. The cheapest insult in the West is to insult Christians.

It's my understanding that the artists of yore stopped painting what they were painting because of technology (the camera) and because it just got boring.

Technology is exploding, so you'd think that would keep art moving. And what about the boring part?

I mean, come on. At this point, denigrating Christ in art is simply trite hackwork. Been there. Done that. A thousand times. Let's move on.

I wonder if there is a correlation between sauna use, birch branch floggings, icy water immersion, and long cold winters that affect the swedish psyche?

Which idiots were we talking about?

By portraying Jesus as a well endowed canine? Well by that logic, I can argue those kids in Jena who hung nooses from the tree only wanted to egange in a sensible discussion of race relations.

Generally, wanting to have a 'sensible discussion' doesn't open with insulting the other side.

HA! The other commenters seem to have missed the best part of the post.

Well, let's admit it. We’re all curious.

So, here it is.

Positively marvelous. What’s Swedish for “piece of dog crap”?

I need to apologize for linking to that unholy excrement, so here’s a photo I found doing the same search: Enjoy.

Are these artists all eleven or something? Do they laugh at fart jokes too?

I think it is sad that this passes for art and for intelligent comment on religion. I think it is a kind of group think that produces this. The circle of people who think this is art and intelligent commentary can't be that large and they probably need to think all their collective work is the cat's ass to reinforce their own self-worth and self-importance.

Wow, Biss, if that's really it...that looks like a failed woodshop final.

Pathetic Christo-bashing. Unworthy and unoriginal.

So I won't say anything about canine-big member Christ arisen.

The cheapest insult in the West is to insult Christians.

"The cheapest insult of a major religion", maybe. But cheapest insult overall, no.

Insulting atheists is both risk-free and common. Presidential candidates can openly declare us to not be real Americans and nobody even cares it happened. They can opine that morality is impossible without religious faith and not have a single pundit comment on the fact that they called millions of Americans incapable of morality.

I'm not complaining, really; it is only natural that Christians would spend little of their time considering an atheistic point of view. But I do get sick and tired of hearing Christians whine about how picked-on you are.
