One week to wallow in Mac rumors.

The announcement of an announcement to be made September 5th. David Pogue collects the rumors. The one I want? It's so obvious: an ultra-light laptop.

My wife just bought a Sony PC that only weighs 2.7 pounds with a 11.5 inch screen.

The Sonys look very nice. If I weren't married to Apple, I'd go for one.

I've never been an Apple person. Good for graphics, etc., but I've always found them to slow...but it's a matter of taste.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

I've only ever used Macs. There's nothing you can say that will change my mind. I'm just hardcore devoted... and have been for more than 20 years.

अनामित म्हणाले...

I have friends who feel the same way.
I love the look, etc., just became so used to PC's I stick.

I have done well with the stock, though.

If you switch from a mac, I'll eat an egg-salad sandwich.

If you buy me an agg salad sandwich I'll eat an egg salad sandwich. ;)

I like the fact that with the Intel Macs I can finally do all my real work on my Mac, as always, and run Parallels Desktop and Windows for the only stuff Windows is good for: games. :-)

I'm hoping for a touchscreen iPod. I don't want an iPhone because I already have a phone, but my first gen iPod is getting long in the tooth. I've already had to replace the battery in it once and now it just freezes occasionally.

"my first gen iPod is getting long in the tooth."

Whoa! I can't believe it still works! My first-gen ipod is in a plastic bag in pieces.

No more frivolous expenses.

Your heirs won't be pleased with you frittering away their money.

I just can't get excited about a company that is so devoted to locking people out of their products.

The one exception would be MacBooks, which you can dual-boot, but those are more expensive than an equivalent PC. So forget it.

I want a tablet so I can annotate easily in the classroom. There's a company who retrofits MacBooks as tablets, but they're way out of my price range.

"I just can't get excited about a company that is so devoted to locking people out of their products."

You mean the consumer electronics products that are exactly as closed as every other consumer electronics device (see the other thread on the same subject here at Ann's place)?

"The one exception would be MacBooks, which you can dual-boot, but those are more expensive than an equivalent PC. So forget it."

You mean you found a cheaper PC that runs Mac OS X? Where? :-)

All teasing aside, the TCO benefits of Mac ownership are pretty compelling. I routinely use a Mac for five years, upgrading to each new OS release over that time without problems, before buying a new machine. Upgrading from Windows 3 to 95 to NT/2000 to XP to Vista has meant new hardware at each step. The only reason I can think of for using Windows is that you already have thousands of dollars' worth of Windows software, and with the Intel Macs and one of Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMWare, even that's no longer compelling. YMMV, of course.

I'm right there with you, for nearly 18 years now. Granted, I'm a musician, and all the good music programs started out on Macs at the time, but I'd still never use anything else.

Yeah, and the other exception is the mini, which you can dual boot.

And the other exception is the iMac, which you can dual boot.

Oh, and another exception is the Mac Pro, the big desktop machine which ... yep, you can dual boot.

I've been happy with the number of years of use I get out of each Mac I've owned -- and that's years of use without having to monkey with upgrades to software or hardware, for the most part. And when I've had to do either, it's been easy.

Macs are among the leading causes of smug emission.
