Have you given Blake a fair shake? He needs to develop his arrangements and incorporate his original elements. Can you really compare him to hit-the-ground-running Melinda and Jordin? But, no, I don't think he's going. Do you? Did you see him in this Leno clip? Look, he'd never even see the show -- he says.
UPDATE: They start with Jordin. She's made it! Uh-oh! What now? Ryan asks Melinda to step forward. "America has decided... that this is the end of the road for you tonight." Ah, horrible! Blake makes it. That's what I wanted. But, no! Melinda must go. Nooo! That's not right!
MORE: Wow. I had a feeling this was going to happen. I think Simon knew it. He looked so gloomy through the whole show. Everyone knew she was the best. Ryan invites the judges to comment. Randy: You were the best. Paula: You've already made it. Simon: You are one heck of a singer. As Melinda sings her last song, Jordin looks oh so happy. Next week, I think we're going to see the winner is Blake.

I'll never watch this show again. It's just a popularity contest. A shallow one, at that.
Oh, yeah, you will. That's what we said around here when they disqualified Frenchie, way back when.
No, I won't. Melinda was clearly the most talented singer. Sorry, Prof. Althouse, but it should have been Blake. I'm completely dismayed.
It should've been Jordin. Blake had some style. It's not a lung contest.
But I am dismayed too. I'm just saying... you will keep watching. We've been through this soooo many times.
At least it's not predictable...
Though... weeks ago, I predicted Jordin to win.
C'mon, I am susceptible to giving myself to much credit, but am I the only one that sees parallels between this blog and American Idol?
Well, Jordin maybe. But, it's not a sound effects contest either.
Mindsteps: Am I about to be voted off? Am I going home?
Curtiss -- America voted and...you are safe.
Who the heck is Frenchie?
Tamyra, I'll give you.
But Frenchie was horrid in a year filled with mediocrity.
I know we should expect it by now, but it's still a bit of a shock when this kind of thing happens. I'd say that my favorite performers rarely seem to get beyond 3rd or 4th place. But the only difference this year was that this was the first year when I genuinely liked all of the top three--which hasn't been the case in several other past years.
I liked Melinda. Melinda was the best performer and, as Simon said, she brought it every night, every performance. Based on that alone she didn't deserve to be sent home. But it isn't based on that alone. She doesn't look the part and she has zero sex appeal. Melinda is not the whole package. That's what did her in.
Well, I'm glad Blake survived just cuz I predicted he'd win way back in the thread with the predictions.
There's no reason to get upset. Melinda is obviously going to be recording an album and will have every opportunity she would've had had she won the whole thing. So the kids who are the majority of the voters went with a 17 year old female and a heart-throb, stylish guy. Not so surprising.
Melinda already seems like a pro. I think the audience felt more compelled/excited to vote for Jordin because she is more of an amateur like the audience members, and she is exceeding expectations.
I'm starting to think I should root for Jordin just because she would most benefit from the win. Blake is clearly marketable after the show ends, whereas Jordin might need whatever extra push the win might give her. Not that I'd buy any of their shit, but whatever. One feels emotions and wishes them well after watching them on a whole season. :)
Even though the music on the show is not my taste (I watch just for the hell of it), I'm amazed that a 17 year old can handle the pressure and stress and spotlight of this show for all these weeks the way Jordin has.
The minute one of the judges say you are going to be in the finals, you can pretty much pack your bags. Same thing happened with Chris Daughtry.
Contestants who look like shoo-ins don't get votes. People always vote for underdogs. Simon should have kept his mouth shut.
Jenny D. - But don't you think the judges know that? I think they're expert manipulators. And I think they really didn't want Melinda as the winner. I think they have to want Jordin. She's much more marketable than Melinda (go sales!) and much more malleable than Blake (no headaches!).
I was never happy once they picked the final 24. Melinda will be just fine as far as a career, and we'll see if they can make something out of Blake or Jordin.
I was going to be snarky, but then I remembered I watch Survivor and Top Chef. sigh.
I still wish Chris Sligh had lasted longer, as a matter of voice quality, creativity, and personality.
Have we been spared the annoyance of tin-eared Clive Davis' song requests this year, or will he be on next week?
I think we will be spared Clive's "Songs from the Crypt" this year. He's too busy haggling with Kelly Clarkson and trying to resurrect Whitney.
Jennifer, if the judges were doing that, why does Simon look so unhappy?
I'll never watch this show again. It's just a popularity contest. A shallow one, at that.
You're just now coming to realize that this is a popularity contest? If it was anything else, the results wouldn't be decided by nationwide television vote - they'd have the judges select the winner.
If singing ability was all that mattered in music, no one would have heard of Bob Dylan or Neil Young, and Josh Groban would be the most popular artist in the world. Singing talents are plentiful. You sell records based on bringing something unique to the table, and Melinda's greatest quality - her voice - isn't that unique.
Jenny D. - Maybe he actually has a soul after all, and he feels bad for subverting a good talent? No, that's probably unlikely... :P
You have a good point.
So, the Washington Post doesn't have proofreaders anymore? We Read the WaPo So You Don't Have To: The second career of Blake Edwards as Idol performer.
(sorry, I confused one Simon with another earlier)
