Hey, that was awfully minimal State of the Union blogging...

You're not one of these people who watched "American Idol" and not the State of the Union...

Are you?....

Because obviously you did watch "American Idol"...

Well?...

What the hell is going on in this country? Doesn't anybody have any sense anymore?

Makes perfect sense to me!

actually i thought i was watching twilight zone..an episode i hadn't seen before but seemed so familiar...bunch of old doddering fools, endless bored looks, lotsa backslappin' and huggggies...awwww, and a timeless speech..one that could have been made any time in the last 40 years with just a change of date and president.

i particularly loved watching cheney squirm having to sit next to a woman who got where she was in the same manner that cheney himself got where he is, by being a tough, hardassed, mean son(daughter)ofabitch who takes no prisoners.

god i miss the screamin'

also..in keeping with your thread title..."that was an awfully minimal state of the union"

Why watch, when you can read? Besides, this is Bush, and Bush isn't the greatest speaker in the world. Between a potentially flubbed performance and the original text, the original is probably preferable. They post it on the Whitehouse website, after all.

I didn't watch it. I was busy reading the Greenburg book, and to be honest, I really didn't care what Bush has to say, at this point. I'm interested in what he does and doesn't sign or veto, in what he does in Iraq and how he reacts when the Dems pull the plug (should the cowardly lion find his courage), but I'm about done wasting time listening to what he has to say. Show us don't tell us.

I didn't watch because I was asleep, and boy a good night's sleep really does wonders!

I also am tired of listening. I'm with Simon. Show me.

Let's face it, both shows are full of deluded, talentless blunderers, but at least on one of them there's a chance that you might actually see and hear someone who knows what they're doing.

Something weird was going on with Grandma Pelosi through a good portion of the speech. Either her partial kept falling out, she was chewing her cud, or she had a mouthful of peanut butter.

Assuming he isn't now persona non grata around here after the libertarian dustup, Dan Drezner has this short summary: watching (and probably giving) this speech was pointless since "Bush's domestic policy proposals are immaterial, since they are DOA [in Congress,] ...[and] [r]eaction to Bush's foreign policy proposals are immaterial" unless Democrats are willing to "use the A-bomb of defunding a policy initiative."

I guess there are people who like the SOTU, and those who think it's a waste of time.

Personally, I never miss it, but then I'm British and we love timeless, stupid traditions * especially anything with ceremonial.

*I'm aware that President Wilson re-instituted the SOTU since he loved the sound of his own voice, but traditions are made at some point. Even if its yesterday.

Cheers,
Victoria

LOL! So Ruth Anne was right. Pelosi was really chewing gum.

Jesus, why not just go whole hog and put on a poodle skirt, or neck Dick Cheney pretending like it's the Drive-In.

Cheers,
Victoria

I don't think it was gum-chewing, or if it was, she was chewing gum in a way I've never seen. She was running her tongue between her teeth and gums and licking her lips like a very, very old person. Almost like a dog who's been fed peanut butter. It was weird and distracting and that doesn't even take into account the distraction of her prisoner-of-war-sending-coded-messages eye-blinking.

I didn't watch anything at that time, actually.

I'm shocked that anyone actually cares about watching the address, outside of the news industry or the pundit class.

That's what the transcripts are for, after all.

hdhouse म्हणाले...

Hey Simon...did you like the domestic part about entitlements?
That was choice. 6 years of total control and no action. dems in place for 2 weeks and it passes. Bush then stands up and says "hey let's do something about this problem". ready fire aim.

Simon म्हणाले...

HDH - refer to my 7:48 AM comment. ;) In the abstract (and I don't know what was said) Bush has no standing with me to talk about spending after the appropriations bills he's signed and the complete train wreck of his attempt to sell social security reform. There's a problem that anyone with a basic grasp of math understands has to be solved, and Bush lacked the political skill to move it.

One of the funniest replies I've ever read on Althouse.

Now I have this visual of Pelosi in Colditz or as Jed Clampett's bloodhound that I can't get rid of.

Cheers,

If our ceremonial involved politicians dressing up in stockings and robes and waving wands and black rods about, I might watch it too. But alas, it doesn't -- they look just the same as they do every day.

You've got to see it to believe it.

Victoria: The Althousian term is "puppy-tongue lick", used in reference to John Kerry, see #2.
