But I was posing next to a shoe covered in nails -- a real spiked heel:
And lolling about on a red settee:
IN THE COMMENTS: I'm moved to ask "What is the difference between Bill Clinton and a stiletto spiked with nails?"
ABOUT THAT SHOE: It came from this shoe auction, a fund-raiser. Here's their most recent collection of shoes, including one by Charley Brown, who did the spiked heel pictured above.
AND: If you liked "nailed," you might like "screwed."

I think you're doing yourself, as an intelligent woman who wants to be respected for her intellect, a huge disfavor by posing in this blouse, Althouse!
:P
What makes you think you know what I want to be "respected" for? Or even that I want to be respected? You presumptuous twit!
CB: I hope that doesn't mean I'm going to Hell!
I clicked comments on this post solely to see how quickly someone would come up with a comment like caffeine soldier's.
That didn't take long.
Disfavor? She's attractive as well as intelligent. Whats wrong with that?
I think both photos are great, and the spiked heel might be turned into an excellent graphic for the blog.
(I had another word for our newest resident bore, but I thought better of it and deleted my comment before I hit publish. Suffice to say there's one in every crowd.)
You're kinda hot, Professor. But then, so am I. Did I tell you that I'm The Person Of The Year?
Loll -- 1 : to hang loosely or laxly
So, . . ., is that your right foot wearing a green sock and a black shoe? If so, then cool! If not, cool anyway.
Great photos.
"So, . . ., is that your right foot wearing a green sock and a black shoe? If so, then cool! If not, cool anyway."
Maybe I'm just crushing someone... and that's what I'm so dreamily pleased about.
To paraphrase something I read once:
Well, Ann, you do appear to be "posing." Maybe it's just an accident.
and: It's not about the smiling, but the three-quarter pose and related posturing, the sort of thing people razz Katherine Harris about.
Consider yourself razzed.
Perhaps in the bottom picture you are dreaming of crushing libertarians with the shoes from the top picture. Just a thought!
verif word: "zyify." Which could be coinage for describing the above-mentioned process...
Ruth Anne: Just two questions for you:
1. What do you think are the chances I took that into account when I made this post?
2. What is the difference between Bill Clinton and a stiletto spiked with nails?
Ron: "Perhaps in the bottom picture you are dreaming of crushing libertarians with the shoes from the top picture."
I wasn't... but now I am!

That, surely, is the question that launched a thousand punchlines and rimshots.

Look at the angle! Maybe it's just the angle of the photograph, but if it is, then Ann is not only a humble blogger, but an extraordinarily flexible one.
Let me beat someone to the punch (someone is eventually going to guess, so it might as well be me) - this is the poster, right?
Simon: Yes, that is (a copy of) the poster. The one in the photograph is about 5' by 4' -- an original. It's fabulous.
As to the shoe in the picture: it is mine, and I am extraordinarily flexible. Most of the time, when sitting at my desk, I'm in the lotus position (modified).
Eventually you're going to have to post something that something about yourself which isn't appealing, you know.
Today doesn't appear to be that day.
Professor A: Seeing as you used the verb "posing", I am suspecting that the likelihood is 100%.
The difference between Bill Clinton and a stiletto spiked with nails? The stiletto has a truthier appreciation of feminism.
That second picture looks like a pose for Althouse in Ecstasy. Where are they going to put the statue, the Vatican? Maybe they could use it to replace the Mohammad statue in the Supreme Court the Muslims are bitching about.
CB said...
"If the 2007 weblog awards add a "most photogenic blogger" category, you're sure to win."
The irony is that, by rights, she'd beat Valenti in that contest by a country mile.
"What makes you think you know what I want to be "respected" for? Or even that I want to be respected?"
Oh, sry, Althouse. I simply assumed that you, as a feminist^, would prefer to be respected for your intellect than for, uh, bodily characteristics. But now that I look at the pictures again, I don't see Bill Clinton hanging around in the background, and of course this makes all the difference. Damn, how could I be so mistaken? :D
(^ "I really don't know why people who care about feminism don't have any edge against Clinton for the harm he did to the cause of taking sexual harrassment seriously, and posing in front of him like that irks me, as a feminist." AA)
Kirk:
You still think the first comment was facetious?
Caffeine: I was never against posing, I always just said that posing means something, that one ought to own up to the meaning of one's poses, and that one ought to have good meanings. I stand by my pose and its meaning.
Who's the photographer?
"I was never against posing, I always just said that posing means something, that one ought to own up to the meaning of one's poses, and that one ought to have good meanings."
Hey, I've never been against ladies posing, too! :)
As for the meaning - well, since there are no mind readers (at least I hope so), it always lies in the eye of the beholder, doesn't it? We shouldn't expect that we interpret it in the same way as the person who was photographed...
Caffeine: What I did in that Feministing dispute that pissed people off was to observe that someone was posing -- and she admitted she was posing -- and to offer my interpretation of what it meant. Anyone could disagree with my interpretation and offer their own interpretation. Instead, what people did -- lamely, in my opinion -- was to say what a bad person I am to interpret a pose. I stand by -- I pose by! -- my right to interpret how adults voluntarily pose in photographs they consent to have posted publicly. I don't think it's wrong to do that, and I'm willing to accept that my interpretation may be wrong. Unfortunately, people did not argue with me on that level. They just said I was mean and awful to say something that wasn't flattering about a young woman. I scoff at that, and you should too.
"Instead, what people did -- lamely, in my opinion -- was to say what a bad person I am to interpret a pose."
Seems like many people still are acting under a totally old-fashioned idea of basic politeness. This is sooo 20th century...
Ruth Anne: I'm the photographer.
Caffeine: I am definitely not blogging to be polite. This was political writing. These were people who had been gathered together to receive the influence of the Clintons. They were to go out and use their blogs to serve the interests of the Clintons. I feel no compulsion to be polite in that arena. These are political bloggers, not nice people circulating at a social gathering. It was time for the dagger, I chose to stick it in, it hurt, and they cried and they attacked me... in a prolonged, nasty, and quite sexist way. There's no politeness in the area, and I won't be polite next time either. I know the push-back when I see it, and I will not be pushed back.
What? You've got the geezers going with those poses.
Then you've got complainers.
What are they bitching about? You look good at your age? I looked good at your age, too.
Listen, publicity never hurts. Spell your name right, get your good side in the closeup. Get some controversy going. What the hell? People do not like boring.
Love that shoe, too.
I love your breast blogging Miss/Ms. Prof Althouse. Who cares if you are acting hypocritical. There's boobs in the pic. Coincidently, I'm guessing 34C?
"It was time for the dagger, I chose to stick it in, it hurt, and they cried and they attacked me... in a prolonged, nasty, and quite sexist way."
You used the dagger, and this pushed you into a knife fight. Ok, 'that's how the cookie crumbles' in the blogosphere. Nothing wrong with that, except your complaints that the retaliation was unfair. Honestly, I can't understand what's the point in complaining about the other side paying back in kind? If you don't like that, better don't sink to that level (I would prefer that). Imho the blogosphere needs more restraint, not less...
I'm curious if Ann thinks Gennifer Flowers, and Paula Jones were posing in Penthouse.
I make no moral judgements, but it's odd since they are entwined in this, how they escape scrutiny.
"What are they bitching about? You look good at your age? I looked good at your age, too."
That's not the point, Bea. In fact, I wouldn't throw Althouse out of my bed (quite probably, it would be the other way around). No, Althouse recently became popular as a photo critic, some people think her outspoken opinion went a bit too far, and that's why she is now in a position where she has to prove that she can take as good as she gives.
Well, if I was the judge, I'd say, almost.
Wait a minute, here, I'm losing it, or this makes no sense. Can somebody please explain to me the similarity between Professor A's "pose" there, and the (in)famous feministing-Bill-Clinton Hey-look-at-my-boobs pose? I mean, look, I like boobs as much as the next guy. Hell, I like to think I like them more. But fer cryin' out loud, people, it's a tasteful frickin' blouse worn by someone standing like a normal healthy adult and the photo stars the shoe. If you can't right off tell the difference between the two photos, and need professors to pose in sexless tweeds, the problem is you.
And, c'mon people (and I'm sweating here trying to figger out how not to make this sound like a diss of the good Professor) look, people, it's not a sexy photo (except maybe of the shoe). If you're that hard up for smut, you're on the Internet already, go for it.
"If you can't right off tell the difference between the two photos, and need professors to pose in sexless tweeds, the problem is you."
Actually, I can't. What did Jessica do wrong? Should she have crossed her arms in front of her bust? Should she have chosen a place in second row? Really, what do you see in her photo that you don't see here? Bill Clinton???
"it's not a sexy photo (except maybe of the shoe)"
Hey, I think they second photo is sexy!
Ok, I'm not a shoe fetishist, so...
Christopher: Lovely. Nice to see your work again. I think you're an accomplice in your mother's ploy to win Conservative Blogstress Diva. Nothing like a little drama for a diva.

Here's where you are blatantly wrong. I didn't "complain." I know I started the fight, and I accept their fighting back. I'm just saying that their fighting style was lame and sexist. Which is me fighting back. I'm not whining, and I never was. The only thing is, I never apologized, and I never stopped fighting. Face it. I wasn't a hypocrite. I didn't even make a big deal out of the fact that these so-called feminists stooped to making numerous sexist, ageist, and lookist comments, betraying their own principles ... and demonstrating, as they did in so many ways, that they don't know how to argue on the merits. They never even got close to dealing with the real issue: Why were feminists sucking up to the man who undercut the feminist movement? I take their attacks on me as an implicit concession that they sold out badly. Watch them attack me again for being an ugly old bitch.
I have a question for caffeine soldier.
It seems as though you (and if not you, then certainly many people who visit this blog and say similar things as you have) basically think that the reasons Ann has put forward for why she criticized Valenti are basically just a smokescreen for... You know, whatever it is you think her real agenda in so doing may be. If that's your view, I'm curious about your view on the Clinton impeachment. Do you agree that there was a genuinely serious (and possibly even impeachable) offense in Clinton having committeed perjury, or do you think that it was just a smokescreen for the GOP's partisan agenda?
Naked Lunch: "I'm curious if Ann thinks Gennifer Flowers, and Paula Jones were posing in Penthouse. I make no moral judgements, but it's odd since they are entwined in this, how they escape scrutiny."
See what Clinton has done to you? In any other context, you would have nothing but sympathy for the lower class woman pushed around by the politically powerful white man. And now, you can't even see what you're doing.
"Do you agree that there was a genuinely serious (and possibly even impeachable) offense in Clinton having committeed perjury"
No
"or do you think that it was just a smokescreen for the GOP's partisan agenda?"
Yes
This has been another shameless plagiarism of the popular series 'simple answers to simple questions'.
"What did Jessica do wrong?"
Showed childish excitement and pleasure to be posing with a man she should have been critical of and when called on it, pretended she was just standing there expressing nothing at all.
Also, she ran a blog displaying big boobs all over it and tried to deny the significance of it.
Caffeine Soldier,
That doesn't surprise me. To say nothing of your politics, it's demonstrative of your mindset. You have a clear hostility to believing that there is any validity to the arguments of someone you're opposed to. Can you offer any examples where someone you don't like has attacked someone you that do like, where you don't think it was a smokescreen to hide their own agenda?
"I take their attacks on me as an implicit concession that they sold out badly."
Let's agree that we disagree on this, Althouse. It's obvious that there can be many different opinions on this issue.
Just one last question, out of curiosity: Did you ever meet Bill Clinton? If 'yes', how were you dressed (if at all :) )?
Ann,
It would seem that one sees some true believers aong us - but these are on the left.
Can you believe the crap you have to take from the public?
Honey, you're not ugly, and you're not too old.
"Can you offer any examples where someone you don't like has attacked someone you that do like, where you don't think it was a smokescreen to hide their own agenda?"
I'm a cynical guy who always assumes that people attack each other for more than a single reason, so, honestly, no. Of course, it depends on what you mean with 'attack'. For me, that's more than simple criticism.

Anyone who even knows what the lotus position is is OK in my book!
I've often wondered about the Yoga habits of bloggers. Prof. Reynolds posted about Yoga mats a loooong time ago but that was about his only Yoga post.
See what Clinton has done to you? In any other context, you would have nothing but sympathy for the lower class woman pushed around by the politically powerful white man. And now, you can't even see what you're doing.
I would think the proper thing to do would tell him to button his damn pants up and report it. Not secretly tape conversations and sell the story to literally anyone that would buy it. In fact, the same people that uncovered the "scoops" are the same people that spent millions of dollars to find them, and would benefit from its release.
Blogstress
Ruth Anne:
That sounds like some kind of nervous breakdown, not some kind of dominatrix.
:)
Ann:
You are always honest to a fault. Re the Valanti rhubard, you never once complained about the blogassault which mischaracterized your point- that feminists in general and that the group of Clinton invitees in particular, overlooked his taking advantage of a young employee. And in effect betrayed feminist principles.
"What is the difference between a stiletto spiked with nails and Bill Clinton?"
One of them has a heel and the other one is a heel?
Or even that I want to be respected? You presumptuous twit!
I love this blog.
Maybe I'm just crushing someone... and that's what I'm so dreamily pleased about.
Ok, that is naughty.
and I am extraordinarily flexible.
Hahahaha. This is the best Althouse post ever. I don't understand why people are complaining or calling Ann a hypocrite. Ann is just being herself. That breast-blogger girl went to a political event as her political self, violated her political philosophy, and then posted pictures of it on her political site. I don't see how Ann's posing here violates any of her principles (it's not like she's posing at a Code Pink rally). Really, I think people are offended by the fact that Ann is so hot. Super-smart AND hot is just too much for them to bear. As Alcee Hastings would say, you're "haters".
Ann, you get my vote for the bloggiest blog.
Keep up the good work!
"I don't understand why people are complaining or calling Ann a hypocrite."
That's obvious: Because she is so "extraordinarily flexible"! This used to be called "flip-flopping" just two years ago...
Too much fun with double entendres! :-)
(Actually, can there be too much of that?)
