The dazzling MacBook screen.
My Powerbook is (slightly) less than a year old, so it seems wrong to replace it, but I just got a look at it side-by-side with a MacBook, and the difference between the two screens is astounding. I keep the screen brightness turned all the way up on the Powerbook, and we had to turn the brightness nearly all the way down on the MacBook to get the two screens to match. Now that I've seen the difference, continuing on the Powerbook feels like struggling to read without my reading glasses.

I know the feeling! I have an iBook, which has a worse screen than Powerbook. Maybe it's time to reward yourself a gift :)
I need more light to read than I did when I was younger, though, so I'd like to have the control to adjust.
Are you suggesting that my Powerbook might just have an accident???
Will the Althouse Powerbook have an unfortunate meeting with Denise Richards?
A diva would get a new laptop every year. How could she possibly bear being around other bloggresses who have newer and better laptops?
Absurd to even think that a diva would put up with such a thing.
Uh oh. I agree with Ruth Anne. I remember getting the same kind of vibes, before the new car or in the days when the condo was being discussed. First it's an inch, then a foot, then a yard, and then the dash for the finish line. Touchdown! It's a done deal!
Are you suggesting that my Powerbook might just have an accident???
Which will, purely coincidentally, be after a full and thorough data backup.
I don't want the old computer to die first, because one of the coolest things about the Mac is the process at the beginning where you connect the old one to the new one and there's a kind of transmission of souls or whatever it's called.
Oh my goodness, nypundit; I weep for you!
Ann, don't drop the Powerbook--put it on ebay or sell it to Small Dog. Someone like Joshua, or me, can then upgrade cheaply.

Well, sure, but please be careful.
RAA,
Carrots?
Ha!
"Are you suggesting that my Powerbook might just have an accident???"
Careful with that hammer.
Speaking of the condo, whatever happened with that move, Althouse? I was around back when you were contemplating what I thought was an ill-thought out move and though you were coy, it was obvious to everyone but you that you were going to make the move. I left in a snit over some other matter and came back a month or so ago and it's not entirely clear to me if you ever made the move.
Details, please.
Transmission of souls? Were talking Vulcan mind meld here.
I got a Macbook Pro for my birthday in June (although it's technically a "birthmas" present, as I'll be getting very little from the parental units next Monday), and I totally love it! A lot of people thought I'd rush out and buy a mouse because nobody seems to like the little trackpad, but I'm cool with that as well.
"Transmission of souls"--that's great. I had that moment between the Macbook and the Ancient and Venerable iMac, which I'd had since Christmas '98, and I was quite impressed with how quickly and smoothly it went.
I have a new macbook. I love it and the screen is marvelous. I take it everywhere. I find myself using the old iMac with the marvelous 20" screen less. And you get used to the trackpad very, very quickly.
...and there's a kind of transmission of souls or whatever it's called.
Wow! That's the first hint I've seen of an Althousian belief in the Transcendent. Are quotes from the Diamond Sutra next?
Be careful of hurting that PowerBook, though. Could it be a sentient being? It is, at the very least, an object that should be seen in its true light: another transitory physical phenomenon that induces desire or aversion through contact and sensation, just like the rest of us.
...you connect the old one to the new one and there's a kind of transmission of souls or whatever it's called.
It's reincarnation, and I highly advise against it. Your next mortal form is determined by your experiences and behavior in the past life. I was hypnotized once and found out I had been reincarnated as a paramecium -- several times!!! What did I do to deserve this???
Anybody know if you get double Karma Coupons for a pair of mecium?
Anybody know if you get double Karma Coupons for a pair of mecium?
I'll let you know next time I;m down there.
PS. Ancient Roman Cartoons - "The Trixus and Dixus Show", as said by Jinxus the Cat: "I hate those mecium to piecium!"
