Three more photos from Ashland.

Here's a wider shot of that veterans mural:

Ashland, Wisconsin

Here's the stark view from the main street -- which might be called Main Street -- looking down toward Lake Superior:

And here's a bar with a name that I think is replicated in many towns, where folks have been amusing themselves for decades saying things like "I'm going to the office" and "I'm haven't left the office yet."

Re the "Office" bar: When I was in college, there was a club across the street from campus called The Library. I can just imagine this conversation taking place many times at semester's end: "I have no idea why I flunked three classes this semester, Mom and Dad; I spent every night at The LIbrary, I promise!"

These are great shots of a small town. I love it that JC Penney's is a free-standing store, not in a mall. And yes, it's on Main Street.

Please go back for a similar shot in mid-February. I imagine it's a even more stark.

No Photo's of the Black Cat Cafe?

Great coffee in a hilarious hippie coffee shop?

It is a great place to go.

Headin' to Stevens Point area this weekend. Hope to see some leaves, but its kind of nice to just go somewhere you haven't been before. Ashland's too far for this Illinoisan, but one of my favorite fall trips was to Lacrosse -- Oktoberfest parade, good food, great views from the towering hill over the city.

I usually wait for people (and cars) to get out of the way. Cars nearly always detract from the picture, and so do many people, but people aren't volunteering to be photographed so I don't like to intrude on them. Sometimes you see them from the back or at a distance in my pictures, but unless they are making a spectacle of themselves, I try not to use photos that show people's faces distinctly.

On cleanliness: it was very apparent that the people of Ashland take great care to make their city look great.

I want to get a sunburn on the back of my neck from the neon sign in the Office Lounge. I may loosen my foulard.

And I spent a lot of time in the bar across the street from our hospital called....wait for it. The Recovery Room.

Across the street from the King County Courthouse in Seattle, there once was a bar called the Court House. Later on, there was another (in a different location) called the Kort Haus. The former had brass gavels for door handles.
