"I made a pact with my older self that I would come back and free that little girl."
Natascha Kampusch, trapped in a windowless room for 8 years, tapped her impressive mental resources. We feel so deeply for her, even as we think nothing of all the young people who pass the same years from age 10 to age 18 without devoting an intense effort to strengthening their minds. And all of us who are free continually miss opportunities to develop intellectually and to understand the value of freedom.

Bless her young heart, and I'm ashamed to remember that I would bitterly complain as a kid over having to feed the cattle on our farm after school. The horrors of 20 minutes of hay-pitching.
Somebody's always had it better than you and somebody's always had it worse. It's better to mope about how much you didn't suffer than how much you did, if mope you must, but there are more productive things to worry about.
I'm ashamed to admit that I'm more concerned over my wife trying to force me to do dishes than the welfare of this young lady, but I do wish her well.
I thought it interesting that she has a cold -- the first of many, I'll wager, as her immune system is attacked by everything she missed by being in captivity. She does come across as resilient...good for her!
My first thought was that she is a real-life Robinson Crusoe, creating a livable world, sui generis, out of isolation. How inspiring.
