Stephen smartly says he wants to work with Tiffani, while all three of the other eliminees -- Miguel, Leanne, and Dave -- say they want Harold. Harold chooses Leanne outright, then leaves Dave and Miguel to draw knifes to see who gets him. Miguel does. So Tiffani gets Dave, the guy who disrespected her so severely last week.
Oh, Tiffani has an uphill battle. And Dave and Stephen show up late and drunk. They undercut her throughout the day, down to the point where they say to the judges that they think Harold should win. Tiffani's dinner doubles each dish, so that she makes 10 things instead of just 5. Harold makes only the 5. He plays it safe, the judges say again and again.
But they give the Top Chef award to Harold. I liked Harold all along. But in the last few weeks, the edge of the antagonism toward Tiffani has hurt me. I was rooting for Tiffani. At one point, somebody said that in the end of the day it is not a popularity contest. But, in the end of the day, it was.

That, and her best dish was entirely Dave's.
Harold's best dish was entirely Miguel's, the duo of beef.
The bitchiness is one thing, but taking credit for that dish and the fiddling with ovens that she got called out for doing in the recap show are a bit over the line. I'd say that the issue is character, rather than popularity. Would you want to work for somebody like that?
Also, did anyone notice that the knot in Steven's tie has grown to about six inches wide? I still wish he was in the final.
I missed the finale because I was paying much more attention to the fascinating-but-confusing last 15 minutes of "Lost." During the season, Stephen seemed to be much more friendly to Harold than to Tiffani, so it's interesting that he'd want to be on Tiffani's team. He may have wanted to sabotage her but that doesn't seem to be in line with how he was presented on the show - he was arrogant, yes, but no saboteur.
Matt: I think Stephen knew Harold was going to pick two others over him, so he saved face by acting like he was picking Tiffani.

I've worked for mean chefs and nice chefs. It's good working for one who is creative and whose restaurant is busy because people like the food. It's hard to know how Harold's work will go over, since he stayed the pedestrian route to win this. Tiffani has the potential to be a creative chef who strikes new ground. I can't remember a single time during the series when a judge asked "How did Harold do this?" but they asked that more than once of Tiffani's food.
I think it's also lousy of a competition to come down to who was nicer to the other competitors. Dave's behavior especially disappointed me. Showing up hung over then drinking for the duration. What a petty little snit. Stephen and Dave both acted unprofessionally, and I wouldn't hire, or work with, either of them after seeing that last episode.
I'm still disappointeed that Lee Ann never decked Tiffani.
