"Roses of the Prophet Muhammad."

That's what they call Danishes these days in Iran.
"This is a punishment for those who started misusing freedom of expression to insult the sanctities of Islam," said Ahmad Mahmoudi, a cake shop owner in northern Tehran.
The linked Associated Press article slyly compares the name change to Freedom Fries.

So Muhammad is stealing the name of a pastry that got to Denmark via Austria, who had learned the trick from the Italians, who stole the idea from a Frenchman. So the French are at the root of all food controversies!

But the important thing here is that we now know that the Iranians can be just as foolish as Americans when it comes to gastronomic nomenclature. Maybe we can bridge the gulf of misunderstanding after all!

Can't we all just eat pastry?!

Icepick,

You are so right. I thought that the people who wanted to create 'freedom fries' because they were mad at Jacques Chirac for having a position that three years later turns out to have been right, were a bunch of blooming idiots.

This proves that idiots can bloom in any nation, creed or tongue.

I wonder what they do to you in Tehran if you ask for a slice of American cheese on your sandwich.

Got news for you, Eli. Only Americans call it 'American cheese'.

Everyone else calls it 'that stuff you put in mousetraps'.

Actually...

I'm reminded that Ann here, once said the name of her future microbrew is Nun's Oath Ale.

I protest most strongly at this profane abuse of Catholic imagery!!

So I'm herewith renaming it to:

"Freedom Danish Brew"

Cheers,
Victoria

Sadly, this is one of the most normal things the Iranians have done in the past few decades.

How is this any different than renaming French Fries to "Freedom Fries"???

Have you seen this rejoinder? Disgustingly funny.
