Sasha Johnson, 29, a Washington TV producer [says:] "Lloyd Dobler ruined men forever. I can't take total credit for this, an ex-boyfriend said this to me once. He contended that Lloyd Dobler's boombox moment became the pinnacle of romance -- the standard that no man could ever meet no matter how hard he tried. I've always loved Lloyd Dobler and have grown to appreciate him more as the years have gone on . . . the guy in high school that no woman wanted but ultimately now the kind of man we want to marry.
"He had that right mix of self-assuredness, sensitivity and geekiness. He was willing to make an insanely bold gesture to get the woman of his dreams back -- something every woman wishes could happen to her."
Shawna Shepherd, 28, an associate TV producer, agrees. "I am always on the hunt for the Lloyd Dobler type. Unfortunately the ones I've dated so far pale in comparison to the Hollywood character," she says. "Sure they were quirky, and the mix tapes award-winning -- I still listen to them -- but a shower and a treat to dinner every now and then would have been nice, too. And let's face it, if a guy stood outside with a boombox playing music outside my window, I'd be unimpressed and slightly freaked out."

Is Lloyd Dobler a robot? I hadn't heard that before.
He's the hot new robot we've all been waiting for.
In many ways, though not in terms of career aimlessness, my husband is a Lloyd Dobler. (Really! I had a number of friends, including males ones, make that exact comparison when we started dating.)It took until my '30s to find him, but worth the wait.
Damn you Cameron Crowe for your writing and direction, damn you John Cusack for your acting, and damn you Ione Skye for being so attractive back in the day when we attended the same junior high and had lockers near each other that I never had the courage to even utter a word to you.
(oh, and damn me for being so durn shy back then)
Also
Does the Dobler-bot come with the more modern iPod with iBoom, or does he rock it old school with the massive boom box?
Don't get me wrong; I really liked the movie, but doesn't this fall under the category of fantasy? I mean I'm in love with Jessica Rabbit, but I don't run around trying to find her equal.
The movie barely hints at the fact that Lloyd is not her intellectual equal and that might well doom the relationship.
I went through my 20s with girls telling me that I'd make a wonderful husband/father someday.
For some reason none of them wanted to date me though. I figure it was the slime factor - I didn't have enough of it.
Finally found a sane woman when I was 34... married her 9 months later.
I've liked a lot of the roles that John Cusack has played - Grosse Pointe Blank is probably my favorite, followed closely by Say Anything.
Re: robotics--"Kickboxing. Sport of the future."
Re: career aimlessness-- "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."
The word of the Lloyd.
Thanks be to God.
A friend helps you move. A real friend helps you move a body.
Modnewt, if you find a real life Jessica Rabbit, I want to see the pictures!
They don't have to be risque; I don't give a damn if she's wearing a potato sack, just take a photo!
True facts: Oliver Barrett was based on Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Dobler was based on me.
If Lloyd Dober tries to shoot you and misses he was actually aiming at a terrorist 11 miles away- and he killed him.
Must be a generational thing! Lloyd Dobler seemed to me to be kind of a geeky, semi-greasy, not really a man type of man. But, I was only 13 when that came out. So what did I know? :)
Roger Ebert once wrote that not every man wants to be James Bond, but every boy does. I've always like that. Similarly, I've always thought that not every woman loves Lloyd Dobler, but every girl does.
I would have expected more women to grow out of their love of Lloyd Dobler, the way that every man of a certain age fell in love with Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but eventually moved on.
Interesting, the character that John Cusack played in High Fidelity hated Genesis and Peter Gabriel. When I heard that I couldn't believe my ears.
Well, if my husband had proposed to me in a gorrilla suit we would have needed to talk.
Heh, heh. And I was going to tell Sippican that if my husband had been moved to rent an entire island to stand on the beach in a leather stetson and bare feet to propose, I would not have complained.
I don't buy anything women say about what they supposedly want, cause it's all a bunch of disinformation and confusion. What they say they want, and what they accept or go after, always conflict.
I would be married already if anything women said was even half true.
(DONT JUDGE ME!!!!!!! I'm not bitter)
So people are really into Lloyd Dobler? Maybe I don't remember "Say Anything" very well. I don't remember finding him attractive.
