"Goodly is your beauty, honeysweet."

A 4,000 year old love poem:
"Bridegroom, dear to my heart, Goodly is your beauty, honeysweet,'" the first line in the cuneiform tablet reads. '"You have captivated me, let me stand trembling before you; Bridegroom, I would be taken to the bedchamber."

He apparently does. "Bridegroom, you have taken your pleasure of me," the poem continues. "Tell my mother, she will give you delicacies; my father, he will give you gifts."

... Muazzez Hilmiye Cig, 93, a retired historian at the [Istanbul Museum of the Ancient Orient] who is one of only a few people in Turkey who can read the text, said she was fascinated by the way Sumerians perceived love. "They did not have sexual taboos in love," she said. "Instead, they believed that only love and passion could bring them fertility, and therefore praised pleasures."
Then would robotic frigidity work as birth control?

quxxo, your shortest post to date and by far your wittiest! Take a lesson from that!

Though to be fair to Ann, there are different types of frigidity so it's not entirely redundant...

Yeah, that would have been my parents reaction to my being porked, too.

Cheers,
Victoria

Victoria: LOL.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Now I'll have to avoid all redundancies. But, really, robotic means mechanical and frigidity is coldness. Can't you be hotly mechanical and coldly human?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

On different occasions, I mean.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

And which is worse in a sexual partner, the hotly mechanical or the coldly human? We're all waiting for the hot robot, right?

Oh, that was Jude Law in "AI."

vbspurs म्हणाले...

It depends. The hotly mechnical might be great during cunnilingus, but the coldly human might actually rock your world during intercourse.

I know which one I'm choosing.

We're all waiting for the hot robot, right?

Let's see:

Bender in Futurama or Maria in Metropolis?

The British Museum has a wonderful section full of Sumerian and Assyrian antiquities like this tablet. Love letters, headache prescriptions, contracts for livestock sales. (Business was undoubtedly much slower in those days than in the email era.)

One of my favorite places.

"Tears, lament, anguish, and depression are within me. Suffering overwhelms me. Evil fate holds me and carries off my life. Malignant sickness bathes me."

And so kicks off Hillary's 2008 campaign!

Sipp, was that on the other side of the tablet? Sort of a Sumerian Hallmark for all occasions, one side for the wedding, the other for the divorce?

Economical people, they.

Most machines actually run hotter than humans. The Apple G5 processor runs about 110º F during normal operation, but can spike up to 180ºF when it is doing high-CPU load activities like burning DVDs, editing video or podcasting (recording digital audio makes both your CPU work very hard and your hard drive spin very fast). The Apple G4 and especially the G5 chips run very hot; the dual G5 PowerMacs have, in addition to numerous fans, a liquid cooling system, which is very unusual for a personal computer. This heat issue is why they have not been able to develop a G5 laptop and one of the reasons why they are (wisely) switching to Intel chips. But even so, your computer will still be hotter than your lover.

"But even so, your computer will still be hotter than your lover."

Maybe so, but I still can't conceive of snuggling up to a mid tower case, Apple or PC. :)

No jokes about putting a G5 or Pentium 4 into a fembot, please!

Palladian म्हणाले...

tibore: you can keep the fembot, I'll take a manbot with open ports, a big CPU and lots and lots of RAM...

beep!

I actually know someone who can read Sumerian and Akkadian -- a friend in seminary who was an Ancient Near East major in college.

And if anyone's looking to compose her own Sumerian love poetry, someone has conveniently mapped old Persian cuneiform to the keyboard.

Have fun!

P_J म्हणाले...

Of course, if you own a Bible you already have a 3,000 year old love poem in your possession, helpfully translated into English (hint: Start at Proverbs and go two to the right).

Like most near-East love poetry, it's very symbolic, quite graphic, and rather unrestrained in praise of pleasure.

Who would've thought it?

Then would robotic frigidity work as birth control?

Insofar as Hillary has one child and her spouse is known to spread his DNA willy-nilly, I would have to surmise that "Yes. Frigidity works"
