Podcast troubles.

Sorry, I had to take the new podcast down. I've got a technical problem with it that I can't seem to overcome. Not the way I really want to spend New Year's Day!

MORE: The problem is that the file size is coming out much too large, around 50 MB instead of 10. I'm using MP3, and I've set it to the lowest quality and to mono. I can't think of anything else to do!

UPDATE: Problem solved... I think.

Maybe try whispering instead of using your normal conversational voice.

One idea: get a life.

These podcasts are super indulgent and really lame.

Your technological problem is a blessing in disguise.

Move on.

Things I can see how to set: bit rate, sample rate, "smart encoding adjustments"...

You might want to check out dBpoweramp , they have a really good compression tool. Just record your podcast and run the dBpoweramp, you can set the bitrate etc.

Ann, you can set the bitrate really low, as speech doesn't need a high bit rate. Try doing that with the sampling rate as well...

Thanks. I'm not looking to change the software. Garage Band and iTunes should be right and were right with my old computer. There's just something different in the settings that's confusing me.

I THINK THIS WILL FIX IT!

Hi, Ann:

Open iTunes, click the Preferences... item in the iTunes menu, and then click the Advanced tab. Now select the Importing sub-tab. Set the Import Using: selection to MP3 Encoder. For Setting: choose Custom...

I checked your settings from podcast #23, and you previously had it set to use 32Kbps bit rate and 11.025KHz sample rate.

If you go back to those settings, everything should be OK.

Good Luck!

Hey! Problem solved.... at least for #29. Check it out (next post).

Verification wor: ggroocy. Used in a sentence: After fixing my technical problem, I'm feelin' ggroocy. Da da da da da da da. Feelin' ggroocy.

ReaderIam: Ah! I didn't think of checking that. Great. Ggroocy!

I'll pass it on to DH, who truly and actually did write that comment.

Hey, I just realized, that may be DH's first comment ever on something other than a purely tech-y message board or a guitar board! Wow!

He's having a "hero" day (he was the one who got up before almost everyone else this morning, let out the dogs in two separate households, and made the morning-after-the-night-before Starbucks run for a tray of super-sized cappuccinos).

I know he'll be pleased it worked.

Happy New Year, by the way!

Iam: I had already figured out to go into that custom area, but I was just guessing at what numbers and then converting to see how it sounded and how big the files were -- trial and error. Getting the actual numbers from the old file was really nice.
