Addiction.
By chance, two of my favorite bloggers are talking about addiction today. Hog on Ice is fed up with his sister's I'm-an-addict antics. And RLC, left on his own to plunge into addictive behavior, analyzes why he doesn't.

Hog on Ice penned one of those rare pieces that has the effect of making me exclaim "Exactly!" This could be the story of anyone with an addict in the family or their circle of friends. He did not strike me as bitter at all; he's angry, but his judgment and analysis of his sister's strategies are clear, and his most important observation is accurate: an addict who has not taken responsibility is not in recovery.
I think Richard is going too far the other way right now. I need some passion in my life, and that often translates into exuberance. I don't consider eating an entire pint of ice cream at one sitting an addiction, when I only do it once a year or so. And ditto for that third or fourth beer. Or, indeed, getting on my downhill skiis (got some of those curvy downhill poles for Christmas to go with) and being the first down a just groomed run. Just occasionally, I need to be passionate. I need to let loose, whether it is in eating the pint of ice cream, drinking that fourth beer, or skiing much too fast for someone in his mid 50s.
That said, I do deal with addicts too often. Nothing drives me crazier than that they absolutely refuse to take any responsibility for anything. A friend recently lost a job because he was looking at porn on the Internet at work. His excuse? His evil stepmother got his inheritance. Never mind that he has probably gotten stoned every day for years, and, by now, is too disfunctional to work for anyone else for very long.
