"Thieves got an illicit glimpse at ... their 'souls.'"
How you feel when someone steals your iPod. Having your laptop stolen would probably feel worse, but laptops are less stealable, because they are hard to sell. Worst of all is to have both your iPod and laptop stolen. You've lost your whole music collection, if it was downloaded. And even if you have the CDs, reimporting everything into a new computer will be more irksome than a thief taking a glimpse of your soul.

This reminds me of a post on the Adweek blog a few weeks ago. In an effort to discourage thieves, one of the writers had begun to wear big, old headphones while listening to his iPod on the subway -- thinking that if the thieves didn't see the white iPod earbuds, they'd assume he was listening to cheap music player and leave him alone. Of course this had a huge aesthetic downside. Security or hipness? Oh, the dilemma!
I was caught in a similar predicament last year. My car was broken into, my stereo (which played mp3s) was stolen, and all my CDs with all my mp3s were stolen as well. Sometime in the next week, my hard drive unexpectedly failed on my computer, and I lost my mp3 collection before I could back it up again. Not to mention that I could barely afford the $200+ repair costs for the damage to the car alone, much less the money for a new stereo, amp, and hard drive.
So yes, I understand how people feel when they have their $300 iPod stolen. And I really hate thieves.
This will sound like a joke, but it isn't. My iPod was stolen out of my car during the 30 seconds I left my car unattended to take some groceries inside. And I'm fairly certain it was stolen by the mail lady. She was distributing mail in the building mail box when I walked by and then mysteriously gone from the block when I went back outside. This makes me sad because I have this innate trust and sense of comfort from mail people, like I do with police and firefighters.
