Fungus of the Day.

IMG_0519

That's a photo by Meade. And here's a photo I took not far from there:

I thought the "Vance" brand for marijuana was amusing. I looked up the company and found this Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, from 2020: "This Milwaukee company rolls thousands of CBD joints every day and is bringing in millions":
At Knuckleheads Tobacco stores, Vance Global's product is the top CBD cigarette, said Madison store general manager Landon Meske. It's the No. 1 staff recommendation for a CBD smoking product, Meske said.

Oh! Knuckleheads. Funny to see "knuckleheads" so soon after the VP candidate who is not Vance called himself a sometime knucklehead. But I know Knuckleheads. I've done photography there:

Catching up with a favorite mushroom.

You remember yesterday's "Fungus of the Day," the one you thought looked like the back of Donald Trump's head. Here's a different angle on the now-famous mushroom, photographed on the same day (July 5th), this time including its small companion:

And to take an even longer view, here's Meade's photograph of me getting into the weeds:

I should admit that mushroom was also "The 4th of July Fungus," the one that looked disgusting at first and then, 21 hours later, flipped into something pleasingly jaunty.

The July 5th photo of the mushroom, above, shows it in decline. And now, here's how it looked today:

IMG_7555

If they could only see its shocking, advanced state of decline, the other mushrooms would surely demand that it withdraw from the ongoing "Fungus of the Day" race.

UPDATE, July 8th. In tatters:

I believe this is Trichaptum biforme...

... commonly known as the violet-pored bracket fungus, purple tooth, or violet toothed polypore, is a species of poroid fungus in the order Hymenochaetales. It is a saprobe that decomposes hardwood stumps and logs. It has a violet colored edge that fades with age. It is inedible....

The 4th of July Fungus.

I hope you enjoy that insane Fungus of the Day. It looked weirder in person, because it's not tiny, as it might appear in the photograph. Think of the cap as half of a softball to picture the size.

IN THE COMMENTS: Hassayamper said a lot of useful things, including: "As I’ve mentioned before, we could use a good look at the gills under the cap.... Careful examination of the entire stem including the base would also be necessary to clinch the identification." I remembered your advice from before and did go for that gills-y shot. Perhaps this is enough:

UPDATE: 21 hours later, it had flipped into this:

IMG_7462

And here it is with a quarter to show the size and with a smaller and younger version of itself:

But was there any competition? Yes, there was this mushroom who dreamed he was a sunflower and loved it... But now the dream is over... and the mushroom is awake....
