"Voters want normal people in charge, and they took their wrath out on otherwise normal Republicans who refused to push back..."

"... against the lunacy, corruption and incompetence within the G.O.P. Republicans have spent years warning that a party unwilling to confront its radicals will be defined by them. They meant the Democrats, and pointed in particular at the democratic socialists working to take over the Democratic Party from the inside. Now that warning applies to the G.O.P. The weirdo right will not stop in its attempt to take over the Republican Party, and party leadership must resist it or watch a group that openly declares its contempt for conservatism do to the G.O.P. what the democratic socialists are trying to do to the Democrats.... If Republicans want those voters back, the party’s leaders, beginning with the man who wants to lead it in 2028, will have to reject the demands of the weirdo right.... Until the G.O.P. rejects the weird, the fringe and the grievance hustlers, Democrats will happily remind voters whom the G.O.P. keeps around."

Writes Erick Erickson, in "I’m a Republican. We Have Let Too Many Weirdos Into Our Party" (NYT).

The top-rated comment over there (by a lot): "It's actually not the weirdos that have done the damage to America, the rule of law, the cohesion of community or the political structure. It was the thousands upon thousands of completely normal Republicans who were willing to trade everything, to overlook every crime, to go blind to every injustice, to tolerate any amount of prejudice and inequity... just to get what you wanted. There was no limit to what you would sanction to make sure women couldn't control their own bodies, and the rich paid less tax. The weirdos get the press. But you and your ilk, sir, have been their enablers. They would have gotten nowhere without your acquiescence."

It is going to be fun to watch the Republican traitors who did nothing with Republican majorities in the house and senate misinterpret this loss.

Erickson is the perfect example of the cowardly republican piece of garbage that made this loss happen.

They are going to try so hard to convince us we want trans welfare scammers in charge of immigration and that we want crime and poverty to be the norm.

They are going to learn that voters are tired of feckless cucks like Erickson mooch his pathetic living being the “real republican” the NYTs trots out every now and then.

The Democrats just replaced Pelosi with a guy who openly advocates that having sex with children is normal and should be legal. I could go on for pages about what weirdos just got elected, but everybody here knows, and obviously that's not a concern of voters, because gas costs too much.

Sorry, Erick Erickson is a never-trumper that wanted to throw the election to Hillary in 2016. He supported DeSantis in 2024. Whether he voted for Trump in 2020 is unclear.

He's the biggest Israel shill in the media, coming a close 2nd to Mark Levin. Erickison loves war in Ukraine and war everywhere . I'll never forget him doing a victory dance when Palin decided not to run in 2012, or cursing her in print.

That the NYT's would run to him to get "the real scoop" on the Republican party is hilarious. But not unexpected.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

As someone said upthread, Erickson not only wanted the capital hill police the shoot and kill the J6ers, he refused to back off that 6 months later. He's absurd defense was that he wants every "violent" protester to be shot. Erickson's an equal opportunity killer. LOL.

Erickson constantly defended Kemp/GA Sec of state in their 2020 election refusal to audit the votes. He was AWOL when they wanted to put Trump in jail. And anytime the MSM bat-signal goes up to "Cancel the Conservative" Erickson is right there going along.

He used to be on CNN and he desparately wants to go back. That "reasonable conservative gig" was a good one.

This is precisely why simply firing people won’t solve the problem. Trump’s terrible judgment is what got them appointed in the first place. Small wonder he’s so poorly advised.

That top rated comment could have been from 30 years ago. But that's exactly what the left thinks the right is obsessed with, even as they show their own timeless obsessions.

We're not. We don't sit around talking about abortions. The left does. We don't sit around picking out groups to favor with tax relief or those to punish with tax hits. We want all people to be able to keep as much of their earned money as possible.
And if our government didn't waste trillions each year, that would be possible. And that's what we talk about most: government spending and waste.

Though now many 'conservatives' have taken to using Israel or Jews as their calling card. You can cut out the money going to Israel. Both Israel and America want it to end. But you'll still have a massive problem. That won't dent it a whit. As it turns out, Israel is not the problem.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

The Free Press also ran an article by Eric Erickson, way back in October. Don't Eat the Shit Sandwich.

Obviously, there is quite a bit of tonal difference in the two headlines. The Gray Lady has no Libertarians, and wouldn't know a Libertarian if a Libertarian bit her on the ass. The NYT still runs headlines that sound like they were written by a prissy schoolmarm in 1949. Plus they got a whole database of hilarious Stalin headlines. You know how funny the old NYT articles are? They are insane!

I imagine Bari Weiss, out on the streets of Manhattan, and she runs into some NYT readers, and she snarls, "Don't eat the shit sandwich, baby." That's the sort of vulgarity you just can't get in the NYT.

Also, the NYT loves the DSA, while Bari hates that party. And I trust Bari to hold the line against those fuckers. When she talks DSA, Bari sounds just like Jean-Luc Picard.

I read the actual opinion, and Erickson just uses the column to attack the bogeyman of "Christain Nationalism" and take a pot shot at Tucker Carlson. The defeat is just an excuse for "reasonable conservative" Erickson to appear in the NYTs and attack those to his right and line up with the Establishment.

The "Weirdo Right" wasn't on the ballot. None of the Senate Candidates were "Weirdo Right". Graham, Hyde-Smith, Hustard, Sullivan, Marshall, Collins, Paxson, etc. And Gov Abbott in Texas lost by the same amount as Paxson.

Rogers lost in Michagan - he wasn't Weirdo Right. Neither were any of the Republican candidates in the Northeast, all whom lost. The R's were massacred in Winsconsin, but no "Weirdo Rights" were on the ballot.

Erickson mentions Kemp - but Kemp won in 2018 by asking and getting Trump's endorsement. And won re-election by a thin margin because 2022 was a Republican year. And what did Kemp actually do as Governor? Nothing. And he left the Republican party in GA worse off than it was in 2018.

Erickson is just a Mitt Romney Republican. He doesn't want to fight the Democrats he wants to be their "loyal opposition" and he hates those to his Right with 10x the passion he musters for the Left. Just like mittens.

Erickson illustrates a problem: "life-long Republicans" who don't want Republicans to do anything Republican and want to be liked by the NYT. The right is divided; Trump temporarily papered it over, but it's not clear the fractures can be bridged--bridged how?

About that comment: "to overlook every crime, to go blind to every injustice" Huh? Trump et al. went after crime, in immigration, welfare fraud etc. The right wants stricter criminal enforcement everywhere. Dems resist and coddle criminals.

"to tolerate any amount of prejudice and inequity" Huh? Trump et al. have at least diminished anti white and anti-Asian prejudice a bit, insisting on equal treatment in education, the military etc.

"There was no limit to what you would sanction to make sure women couldn't control their own bodies" Huh? Trump took abortion off the political table at the federal level.

Florida may have stayed red, but that’s hardly the whole story. Donalds won the governor’s race by barely 1.3 points, Democrats made substantial gains in the legislature, and Republicans lost their House supermajority. That’s not exactly an endorsement of the status quo.

As for counting votes in one night, Florida is efficient, but hardly unique. And no state completes its official count on election night.

Finally, having a secure election process isn’t a uniquely Floridian achievement. Other states manage that too.

Florida held the line in terms of statewide party control. It didn’t exactly hold the line politically. There’s a difference.

Erickson makes some good points, although “weird” may not be the most useful word. The more important question is whether Republicans are prepared to reject candidates who disregard constitutional limits and democratic norms, even when doing so carries a political cost.

The top New York Times commenter raises a related concern about the responsibility of otherwise conventional Republicans who tolerated or defended behavior they once condemned. That doesn't mean assigning equal responsibility to all Republican voters.

The midterms suggest that Trump's confrontational style, once seen as an asset or at least an acceptable liability, may now be costing Republicans votes. But voters were also judging the economy, foreign policy, widespread corruption, and the administration's overall performance. Unfortunately, Republican losses don't necessarily mean voters were specifically rejecting the extremists Erickson identifies.

Having supported Trump in 2020 and 2024, Erickson might usefully explain where he now draws the line, and whether he would hold to it when doing so hurts his preferred candidates. That seems a better standard than debating who qualifies as a “true Republican,” and it’s a standard worth using for both parties.

And what did Thune do?

Blocked Voter ID.
Prevented recess appointments.
Slow walked the MAGA agenda.

He must be primaried next election."

The democrats are all little Bidens - waiting to grow Gollum old and grift like hell along the way.

"Pigeons don’t understand “revenge”."

Yes they do. So far you've just been lucky.

Again: The democrat's number one issue for their own power, one party state is.... ILLEGALS. Getting them here, funding them. with your money.
Yo kid - you screwed.

You might want to watch some videos of 2016 fools saying the same about Trump. Learning from history is the easy part

Pete is too nice.

Wanna bet? 🤔 You talk a lot of shit. Would you like to put your money where that diarrhea is pouring forth. Pete will not make it past Iowa if he runs. Bet me, you pussy.

(How's that "six week" war going you gullible retard. You will believe anything!)

"Among Democratic candidates for the House, the median age is 52 while for Republicans it’s slightly higher at 57. The age divide is even wider among candidates for the Senate, whose median age is 60. Among Democratic Senate candidates, the median age is 53 while Republican candidates have a median age of 63." - newamerica.org

I've seen a lot of online railing against the Boomers lately. I think that age was also a big factor in the recent midterms.

As for promoting extremism, both parties are guilty of it because it got them short term, very public, victories.

D.D., Smart people don't assume they can predict such things, but you do.

Breaking news on Fox: Susie Wiles is resigning; Stephen Miller will be the new WH CoS. Kind of tells you what direction Trump is going for the post-midterms. CC, JSM

Not sure if podcaster Jennifer Welch is considered normal, but she said on her podcast that she wanted to dig up Charlie Kirk’s body and shoot him again.

Second thought, I think that’s normal for a Lefty.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

"she wanted to dig up Charlie Kirk’s body and shoot him again."

We could list hundreds of well known examples of such leftist normality. They far out-number examples of reasonable pragmatic rhetoric. Yep, craving normalcy, that's what it was.

World War I and World War II were unable to displace the British Empire and yet Trump is doing it with a bloodless blockade..

Trump took the last refuge of the British pound. Banking and insurance.

D.D., Smart people don't assume they can predict such things, but you do.

Not true at all. Smart people predict things all the time.

For example, I predicted that the war in Iran would drag on and you believed it would be over in six weeks. My track record against you dipshits is impeccable. I also predicted that Paxton would get his ass beat in Texas when you guys said I was an idiot because Beto. Remember when I told you the reflecting pool was the product of shoddy contractors and not sabotage? It goes on and on and on. I am right an you clowns are wrong.

Anyhow, if you want to bet me about Pete Kegsbreath, giddy motherfucker. Let's knit these mittens.

This is just more stupid Republican cannibalism. Look around Erick. The Democrat Party is filled with wackos and miscreants. Tampons in men’s rest rooms, support for terrorists, opposing deportation, “no kings”, gay pride parades, men breaking records in women’s sports, unrepentant baby killers, pink pussy hats, socialists, Islamists. Republicans are mostly effete, not weird. And that’s why they lost.

Clyde বলেছেন...

It’s not the G.O.P. that’s full of weirdos; that prize goes to the Democrats, who are almost all some form of deviant. That this guy is accusing the party of the normies as being full of weirdos is comical. As far as I’m concerned, he can go screw himself.

“And apparently you know jackshit about the modern liberal mainline protestant theology. There is nothing that makes him out of step with his denomination (PCUSA), including questioning the gender of God.”

So modern day Gnosticism. No wonder mainline Protestant churches are seeing their numbers collapsing.

Yes. Voters* want normal people in charge...." Career Politicians are not normal people. Greg Abbott has been a good Governor, but has been in office too long. Ken Paxton is a career politician with a lot of baggage.

I voted for them because the Donks are poison. You should have found some bright young people with a background running a business and a deep respect for limited government and fiscal responsibility (i.e. the REAL American Dream).

*Meaning live legal citizens who show up in person, identify themselves, and vote once.

"want normal people in charge" Ah, so that's the meaning of electing El Sayed and defeating Collins.

Freder: “There is nothing that makes him out of step with his denomination (PCUSA), including questioning the gender of God.” 11/6/26, 10:02 AM. Which might explain why this church has lost 67% of its membership since 1993. Like most liberal Protestant churches it is grounded on the non-biblical whims and political beliefs of church leaders - that is, thin air.

Republicans lost because of Republicans. Trump supporters, MAGA or no, as always, held there noses and voted for Republicans. It was the Bushes, the Ryans, the McConnells, the Thunes and their ilk who joined other useful idiots to bring down Trump and MAGA and keep the coalition of grifters alive.

Mason G বলেছেন...

"It was the Bushes, the Ryans, the McConnells, the Thunes and their ilk..."

The guys who would never get elected as Democrats, so they run as Republicans? Those guys?

And, believe me, DD. That's pretty good predicting considering your intellectual liabilities.
