Tweet found after prompting A.I. with "get me up to speed on the Talarico-had-a-nervous-breakdown craze."

What?! Never been to Ohio? That's got to be disqualifying. How can we have a Senator who's never been to Ohio?

Parody opportunity:

My contribution to the parody contest:
Well, I've never been to Ohio
But I kinda like its Presidents
There's center for the insane there
But I don't know how to use it
I won't abuse it
Never gonna use it
Staunchly refuse it
Well, I spend my time in Texas
But I do not like Joe Rogan
Trying to get to Washington D.C.
But I'm kinda stuck in Austin
Can you feel it?
Must be near it
Feels so good
Oh, it feels so good
Well, I've never been to heaven
But I've been to Round Rock, Texas
Oh, they tell me I was born there
But I really don't remember
In Round Rock, Texas, it's not infectious
What does it matter?

Its true we don't know what will happen but some of the deeper analysis amongst American election analysts suggests that North Carolina, Texas and Ohio are not toss-up. These seats will all go to the Democrats. As well as the Democrats having selected especially good candidates in Texas especially and Ohio to some extent, the GOP has selected some spectacularly awful candidates.

Democrats then need one more and to hold Michigan, the latter seeming very likely with the GOP again running a truly awful candidate.

Its going to be very close but on balance seems likely the Democrats win both houses and hopefully then this shocking presidency is constrained and the out of control corruption and Trump's love affair with Putin brought to an end.

Usually, it's Republicans who choke in the last weeks of the campaign -- McCain, Romney.

According to my sources, the Talerico unit had to be taken to the Behavior and Diagnostics Lab. It has been been coded to read as human, but under stress some of the coded drives were not resetting properly. Techs were unable to solve the issue in the field.
The unit was repaired and while it was in the shop they took the opportunity to upgrade its hair (long overdue) and its cheeks were re-appled and polished.
The Talerico unit is very impressive technology, significantly more advanced and capable than the Biden models, but it's glitchy. The manufacturer insists it isn't dangerous to humans in its proximity as long as it is kept within the recommended parameters.

Sanity is still waiting for anyone who looks at Ken Paxton’s résumé—securities fraud indictment (settled with restitution), Republican House impeachment for bribery and abuse of office, millions in taxpayer cleanup and calls that the normal choice.Talarico is a former teacher and seminarian. Supporting the guy without the indictments and impeachment isn’t the weird part.

Talarico may suffer from massive cognitive dissonance. A case can be made that his party and its consorts support open borders, mutilation of children, defunding the police, post partum abortion, men in women’s sports and locker rooms, mutilating children, political assassination, ending petroleum, Islamism including terror and Sharia Law, etc., etc. Some of that included with the atheism and antisemitism may be too much even for a Presbyterian seminarian.

The modern Republican Party is a party of parochial nationalism. Trump is cementing that nationalism into the Republican base across what it considers its heartland. That brand may retain a strong grip on roughly a third of the electorate while steadily losing support among the rest. This year’s trend could well continue into 2028.

Trump is setting Republicans up for potentially significant losses of Senate and House seats as inflation and affordability become increasingly salient. Dysfunctional trade policies and a militarized foreign policy disrupt economic life abroad rather than encouraging the global integration that has helped drive prices lower. The practical consequence of many Trump policies is higher relative prices at home—and that is ultimately a difficult proposition to sell to “regular folks.”

It is possible that pervasive corruption eventually turns middle- and working-class supporters of parochial nationalism toward new political faces and personalities. But this generation of true believers has really drunk the Kool-Aid, and the hangover could be immense—and long-lasting.

The Democrats could emerge from 2028 with 60-plus Senate seats and perhaps even some moderate Republican allies.

In January 2029, the Democrats will start writing the Next Deal.

Nervous breakdown? Is that a thing again? Nervous breakdowns were a common plot device in old Hollywood movies, particularly in Agatha Christie-style detective stories. A rich old hag has a nervous breakdown and changes her will as a result, thus tempting one of her former heirs to kill the bitch in revenge. something like that. The nervous breakdown trope disappeared from film plots post-war after psychiatry starting becoming more scientific than philosophic. I recall a Psych 101 lecture where we were told nerves don't breakdown unless you're bitten by a cobra.

The nervous breakdown claim is a tactical diversion launched by the Democrats because it's easily debunked. Whatever caused Talarico to go bye-bye is serious and disqualifying. Maybe he's psychotic and forgot to take his meds, or he went into detox somewhere (Mexico?) after taking peyote. Whatever it is, Talarico is not leveling with Texas voters.

Something really doesn't add up. He's a nationally recognized candidate in a highly publicized Senate race. He gets "the flu" and just...disappears?
Any reasonably competent campaign manager would be giving daily progress reports. Telling everyone how the candidate is bearing up, report that the candidate is wishing everybody the best, etc. Get him to stand in the window and wave bravely to supporters outside. Does he have a mother? (Or maybe his "girlfriend"). Have her bring him chicken soup. Even my mom, who loved me but nobody ever confused with Florence Nightingale, would bring me chicken soup if I was down with the flu for 10 days.
Instead, when he finally shows up in Austin, his campaign manager says something along the lines of "You need to be where we can see you, James."
Doesn't add up.

So, Talarico actually isn't a real person. He is an AI construct. "His" purpose was to create a faux candidate that makes GOP pour millions into a race they were going to win anyway. I feel like you and I are united in our contempt for, and loathing of, the Trump Administration. But Mike Rogers isn't what I think of as a "truly awful candidate." Mike had a good run in Congress; rose to Chair the House Select Committee on Intelligence in a virtually scandal-free Washington career. He's well-liked among a great many Repubicans in Michigan, including some of those of who hate Trump and those who support Trump.

Rogers' problem was what showed up in the last Senatorial election (2024), when Trump won the state by more than 80,000 votes and yet Rogers lost the election by more than 10,000 votes. Some Republicans - like me - won't vote for Rogers because he enodorses Trump, is endorsed by Trump, and will be a Trump rubber stamp in the Senate. MAGA Republicans aren't fully on board with Rogers because he appears to them as a "deep state" operative by his history. (Rogers was openly critical of Trump in the days after 1/6/21, as were most others in Republican leadership. Perhaps MAGA voters remembered that and held it against Rogers, but I have never gotten the impression that MAGA voters in Michigan had the requisite memory or information or intelligence to link those things up.)

And that is what revealed itself the last time Rogers ran. And lost. Under-performing Trump. Just a kind of perfect lab experiment in the limits of what a normal Republican can do in the age of Trump.

Lyrics for Ohio (Come Back to Texas):
She said she needed a break
A little time to think
But then she went to Cleveland
With some guy named Leland
That she met at the bank
There's nothing wrong with Ohio
Except the snow and the rain
I really like Drew Carey
And I'd love to see
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
So when you're done doing whatever
And when you're through doing whoever
You know Denton County will be right here waiting for you
Come back to Texas
It's just not the same since you went away
Before you lose your accent
And forget all about the Lone Star State
There's a seat for you at the rodeo
And I've got every slow dance saved
Besides the Mexican food sucks north of here anyway
I think I made a mistake
It's not that easy to take
She went to make a deposit
Then she cleaned out her closet
Guess I'll sit here and wait
For her to come back home (I wish she'd come back home)
It shouldn't take very long (so long, so long)
I bet she misses the sunrise
And Mrs. Baird's fruit pies
But I could be wrong
So when you're done doing whatever
And when you're through doing whoever
You know Denton County will be right here waiting for you
Come back to Texas
It's just not the same since you went away
I bet you missed your exit
And drove right on through the Lone Star State
There's a seat for you at the rodeo
And I've got every slow dance saved
Besides the Mexican food sucks north of here anyway
Troy Aikmen wants you back
Willie Nelson wants you back
NASA wants you back
And the Bush twins want you back (la, la, la, la)
Pantera wants you back (la, la, la, la)
And Blue Bell wants you back
I got a premonition
I'm taking a petition
And the whole state's gonna sign
Come back to Texas
It's just not the same since you went away
Before you lose your accent
And forget all about the Lone Star State
There's a seat for you at the rodeo
And I've got every slow dance saved
Come back to Texas
It's just not the same since you went away

I am not offended by Talarico's comment about Ohio, but I am surprised by the missed opportunity. It was from a "victim mentality" not an assertive deflection that a more skilled politician would have used. And in 2 years, when he decides to run for president (win or lose the Senate seat), he will hear it repeated back endlessly.

Please use the comments forum to respond to the post. Don't fight with each other. Be substantive... or interesting... or funny. Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 4 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith. Also: No italics, even briefly. Use asterisks for emphasis. And don't play with the format by changing fonts or using boldface or all caps. Never include more than one extra line break between paragraphs.
