"If you would have seen the White House... it was in horrible condition.... The plaster was falling off the exterior.... They had four or five windows where literally the ornamentation was up on one side and had fallen off or half fallen off in the other. And I fixed it. We made a mold of the good one and we put it on the other one and we got it all beautiful. And then we skim coated with an exterior plaster that's phenomenal. The entire exterior with the best artisans you've ever seen.... The White House is now in better shape than it was in 1792, when it was built.... Look, tell Obama the following: The White House is a symbol of America. And when it's dirty, filthy dirty and broken, when the windows are cracked, when the exterior monuments — they call them monuments on the outside — when they're good on one side but missing on the other side of a window, people notice that... 20 years ago, I came into the White House and... I said, 'Man, this place is in bad shape.'... It's been a long time... and I made up for lost time.... And I didn't take any time. I'd literally do it when I walk home from the Oval. I'd walk I'd look up. I'd say, 'Boy, that wall is really bad. Let's go. We got to fix it, fellas.'... And I would try and explain that to a guy like Obama, but he wouldn't understand. He doesn't he doesn't understand the White House has to be clean, pristine, beautiful. It can't have cracks in the column. It can't have big blotches of stone laying outside on the ground from 30 years ago.... Nobody loved it like I do. Nobody loved it. And now the White House is in beautiful shape...."

"Clean and Bright" and "Brand Protection" are huge issues for every company that has customer-facing space. It sets a tone for people the second they walk in.
Naturally, Obama is utterly unfamiliar with those concepts.
"From your headline, this sounded like a non-native English speaker."
He's a native speaker of a language called Trump.
Obama never built anything in his life. Hack lawyer, activist, "community organizer," politician voting "present..."
And as President, instead of building a unified, post-racial USA, he doubled-down on dividing by race and destroying American values. Fundamentally transformed the USA, you might say. Hope and Change, indeed.
Curb appeal matters.
…set the tone. His haters hate his style but have you ever been to Italy? Greece? Those primary colors they paint homes in much of Europe? His tastes tend to align…
rubble isn’t a good look. It shows you don’t have your shit together..
We are lucky to witness this era.
Sharp as a tack!

Yes. Have you ever been to my grandma's house?
It's great, but no one is going to vote Republican on Tuesday because of how nice the White House looks.
Leaving the place better than when you found it basic decency.
The dems have no decency.
The Dems are Antifa thugs. Mobsters. The cult base adore hatred, lies, and destruction.
The Elite dems who grifted their big $$$ haul -(Bill and Obama) are rage-fueled that the port-a-potties, mud and tents will be replaced with a deluxe modern safe building - to serve the US and guests.
They are filled with HATE over it.
Republicans build, Democrats remove the "Ws" from keyboards, and promise to dismantle the BB Ballroom, because...
Democrats waste our money - and demand more. Democrats are ALL now openly saying they want to seize everything privately owned.
Only a jackass would vote for that.
What if Trump teamed up with George Utley?
Congress didn’t “get it” either. The number of public fountains and statuary in disrepair in DC was a disgrace. The reflecting pool must be fixed finally because whining about it has subsided. NOBODY in DC even GAF until Trump cared enough to address these things.
Obama derided the taste as a mix of Saddam and the Cheesecake Factory, but the taste is just pure Donald Trump and something that's been around since the 1980s.
How far back does the Cheesecake Factory restaurant design go. Wikipedia: "The external appearance and interior design of the outlets often features an elaborate pastiche of many different historical styles and has been described as a "postmodern design hellscape". In-house designer Rick McCormack has said that the design is "heavily inspired by San Francisco restaurants of the 1970s.""
The business goes back further: "Evelyn Overton, inspired by a cheesecake recipe from a Detroit newspaper, made a cheesecake for her husband's employer in the 1940s. The cheesecake was well received, and she opened a small cheesecake bakery in Detroit, Michigan, in the late 1950s. She closed the bakery to raise her children but continued supplying cheesecakes to local restaurants from her basement kitchen. In 1967, Evelyn's son David M. Overton left Detroit to attend Hastings College of Law in San Francisco but decided to be a drummer in 1968, performing with the Billy Roberts Blues Band. In 1971, David convinced his parents to relocate to Los Angeles to open a commercial bakery. In 1972, they moved to the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles where they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery, selling cheesecakes and other desserts to local restaurants."
Jeez. How can you hate that?
How about the original restaurant? How Middle America was that? Surprise: it was in Beverly Hills.
Democrats waste our money - and demand more.
Just take your free $5000 and STFU.
The dumbest takes are MAGA trying to claim Obama’s line about Trump making the White House look like a Cheesecake Factory is somehow elitist because Cheese Cake Factory fans will be offended that someone doesn’t want the White House to look like a chain restaurant. Even their culture war is lame this cycle.
When it comes to building things, I don't think I'd listen to Barack Obama on anything. He couldn't build a consensus over a beer summit, let alone anything to do with new architecture or renovation of an historic building.
Based on his own library, he is not the one who should be entering any discussion on taste.
Interestingly, in my working days, I used to call on the design department at Cheesecake Factory, and separately called on Rick McCormack, where he is at now, as Principal at his own design firm.
"... will be offended that someone doesn’t want the White House to look like a chain restaurant."
If you had more of a feeling for political discourse, you'd avoid looking down on "chain restaurants." You just do it casually, off-handedly. That's what Obama did wrong. He let it show that he only dines in finer places that wouldn't be called "chains."

Obama wasn’t criticizing where people eat; he was criticizing Trump’s taste in decorating. Not every criticism of tackiness is an attack on the working class.
There’s a difference between looking down on people and recognizing bad taste. MAGA seems determined to erase that distinction.
Everyone who has worked for a living anywhere knows there are two kinds of people in the world, builders and takers. Builders put something back into their organization. When they are operating something they care for it and leave it in better shape than it was for the next guy. Takers slurp up the value that others have worked for and use without replacement leaving a hollow shell for the poor guy who comes behind.
It’s hard to understand why this building attitude is used to insult Trump. Do we like users and takers more? Do citizens like the assets of the nation to decay and become embarrassing piles of decay? Reading this I guess they do.

Well since that is the language of Trump, let me translate it into Harvard speak, so all you elite people can understand,
“My comparative advantage lies in real estate development and the resolution of practical problems. I have a demonstrated capacity to produce aesthetically distinguished projects at a favorable cost. These competencies are intuitive rather than acquired solely through formal training; indeed, I find their application intrinsically restorative.”
Honestly, if gilding everything in sight keeps Trump occupied and out of trouble for a few hours, it might be the most productive use of his time in office.

Obviously you don’t understand how to use executive power and management principles of delegation to allow organizations to achieve goals over large domains.
Some people think it is beneficial to ignore details, feckless in unum feckless in omnibus.
And yet, DD, he has you talking about him every day..
^^ That’s a very elaborate way of explaining why the president needs a hobby. I’ll defer to your expertise in executive management, but I’m still in favor of keeping him busy with the gold leaf.
"NOBODY in DC even GAF until Trump cared enough to address these things."
Someone or some agency has to pay for these repairs. Most of the monuments are managed by the National Park Service, which has been chronically underfunded by both parties. the NPS currently has deferred maintenance to the tune of $24 billion. I don't see that Trump is the least bit interested in addressing that deficit. In fact, he apparently thinks the solution is to sell off the national parks to the highest bidder (probably not the highest bidder, but rather someone who kisses his ass the most).
"If you had more of a feeling for political discourse, you'd avoid looking down on "chain restaurants." "
Well, why don't we focus on the fact that the more chain restaurants you have, the fewer locally owned restaurants there will be. I think you are being elitist by defending chain restaurants.
gadfly failed math.
“ That’s a very elaborate way of explaining why the president needs a hobby. I’ll defer to your expertise in executive management, but I’m still in favor of keeping him busy with the gold leaf.“
My greatest hobby has been my work. Seeing to the maintenance of government facilities is not the worst hobby, better than spending your time having massive sexcapades with Whitehouse interns, Italian near royalty, and government employed women in the pool like a series of other presidents did.
Don’t forget to remind me that Trump is a proven pedophile though, is obligatory.
“ Well, why don't we focus on the fact that the more chain restaurants you have, the fewer locally owned restaurants there will be.”
Well, why don’t you focus on the fact that chain restaurants are locally owned, most of them?
The White house dosn't really go back to 1792. Only the outer walls do.
In 1950 Harry Truman gutted it down to 4 bare walls. Eveerthing in those walls, including much of the current layout is only about 75 years old.
Former presidents let the WH run down to the point where it was so physically unsound that most knowledgable architects and engineers wanted to raze it and start anew.
Truman, rightly, said now. Regardless of cost, the exterior would be preserved.
They also dug out a multistory basement while they were at it.
Fascinating story.

'...Jeez. How can you hate that?...'
Hate comes easy to Progressives, something that is painfully present for many on the receiving end of it. It requires no obvious detraction, or an absence of value, in fact a value-adding proposition attracts its own flavor of hate from them.
I noticed an older photo of the Iwo Jima flag-raising monument in one of the recent news stories, and it was the color of an old man's teeth, an amberish-brown. Back when it was still intact, I guess a few years ago.
But the photos of the recent vandalism showed it as gleaming white, like the marble had just been quarried. How did it get to be gleaming white, I wonder?
Great point, Joseph Bleau.
For another good example, Princess Diana and Mother Theresa both died at about the same time.
Contrast the reaction to both deaths. Diana was like the end of the world, MT was crickets by comparison.
Diana, with all he wealth and fame, accomplished NOTHING in her entire life other than marrying, sort of, the prospective king. But she did it with a lot of glamor and publicity.
MT established and worked ceaselessly at it that made many lives better and saved many lives.
I think, as an armchair psychiatrist, that people see Diana and know they could never be her so that makes cultish worship OK. But if you are a support of MT, you COULD be her. You gould give up everything you have and go feed the poor. Or at least volunteer in a soup kitchen 1 day a week. That is hard and requires you to associate with THOSE people.
So you ignore MT (a doer, creator), and Jesus for that matter, and worship Diana (a taker)

This is proof that Barack Obama is the greatest troll of all time. He roundly trolled both Donald Trump and Ann Althouse with a single Cheesecake Factory reference.
It’s easier to sell culture-war theatrics when people feel good about the economy. When they’re worried about paying the bills, turning the White House into a Cheesecake Factory may not be quite the political winner Trump and his MAGA supporters imagine.
maybe he meant chocolate factory all along.
How did it get to be gleaming white, I wonder?
I blame Trump, Aggie.
He may not have done it, may not even have known about it. But he and Pete Hegseth seem to be stimulating a mindset in the military of pride. Pride won't let the CO of a base let it look shitty. Pride will motivate even an E-2 to keep things looking spiffy.
There is an old saying "If you don't look like a marine you won't think like a marine. If you don't think like a marine, you won't be a Marine" Also "Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp"
A white, vs a crusty, monument will make everyone step a bit livlier and make them hold their heads a bit higher.
John Henry
Builders are cursed with unavoidably seeing flaws, and blessed with skillfully correcting them.
Trump sees the WH windows and gets going on fixing them. Trump sees Iran funding Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, and gets going on fixing them. It seems to be the same plan, just a matter of scale differing between the issues.
The new criteria for choosing a POTUS - who's the better interior decorator. I don't think Obama will win that. Trump's the guy who spent his life building casinos, golf clubhouses, hotels and mansions.
That Billy bob Clinton got into the act was hilarious. Trump interior decoration was too vulgar for him. Well, i guess nothing tops "classy" Epstein Island.
Funny class dynamic. Trump, son of a millionaire, champions fast food. Obama - a nobody from Hawaii - sneers at chain restaurants.

PERFECT!!!
Bloomberg radio this afternoon reported tightening pole numbers and said the Senate is safely in Republican control. The Democratic commentator was also concerned about the house races.
Honestly, fixing up the White House seems like one of the things Trump would be best at. Yeah, you might have to remove some gold stuff when he leaves, but all the maintenance will be up-to-date, and you'll have some nice improvements.
𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘏 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘹𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.
The difference is that fixing the windows doesn’t raise everyone’s bills. The Iran war has tied Trump’s foreign-policy incompetence directly to the cost of living, exposed how little his priorities resemble ordinary Americans’ concerns, and made him look incapable of winning a war against a country weakened by 40 years of sanctions. Quite the master plan.
Obama built that horror out of an episode of firefly for one billion dollars
"Well, why don’t you focus on the fact that chain restaurants are locally owned, most of them?"
Granted, many chain restaurants are franchised. But if you are buying an Applebees franchise, which will set you back half a million minimum, (Cheesecake Factory doesn't sell franchises in the U.S.) you probably care more about making money than cooking.
Wow. With Trump we also get a Free Bldg maintenance man.
With hindsight, isn't it clear where presidents go wrong? Trump's big mouth and tweeting fingers. Biden's senilty. Obama's nullity. Bush Jr., the nepo baby. Bill Clinton's príck. Bush, Sr., the government guy and swamp creature. Etc. Etc. That ought to be something we can all agree on.
“Even their culture war is lame this cycle.”
Yup
“Builders are cursed with unavoidably seeing flaws, and blessed with skillfully correcting them.”
Most people don’t see the details. Just the effects. You may thin it’s a bit grungy, but thats it. The Trumps see the details, and know that they have to attend to the details to keep beautiful buildings sparkling.
You don’t see this, unless you live in such a building. Here at TILV, everything has a schedule. The gilt is repainted every year. The marble floors are vacuumed nightly and polished weekly (different sections different nights). On and on. We know the people doing the work, and they tell us when they do the work. This is the sort of thing that a Trump sees, and Obama and Biden didn’t have a clue about.
Don’t get me wrong. Trump isn’t unique here. Plenty more here in Las Vegas. Most of the better hotels are maintained like it is here. But plenty don’t, and in a city of beautifully maintained buildings, the ones that aren’t are quickly noticed. They stick out.
Trump is just the first POTUS to live in the WH who sees with the eyes of a builder and maintainer of beautiful buildings for quite some time. This is just what he has done for a living for decades.
Flavio Bolsonaro leaves Brazil for US after election defeat, source, media say ~ Reuters
Cheesecake Factory should comp Flávio Bolsonaro’s first dinner in America. It’s only fitting he arrive somewhere the White House is already trying to emulate.
When the Tesla super truck blew up here, the Trump boys kept using the term “ Porte-cochère” for where the vehicle blew up here. It’s just a building term, like the “monuments that their father used here.
To me, any post mentioning Trump is like using chumming before you fish. All the retards instantly jump into the pool, AI machines humming. The context of the article really does't even matter.TRUMP is all it takes.
The day after he won in 2016, I was standing in a long line at Whole Foods. Everyone was so down and in shock.
I just said Donald J Trump, not that loud. It was amazing. within a minute, everyone in that line and the next were almost screaming about stolen, cheated, we will leave, and we will all die- what came to be the usual retard reaction.
Its fun.
“ Well, why don't we focus on the fact that the more chain restaurants you have, the fewer locally owned restaurants there will be.”
I haven't found that to be true at all. While the outer perimeter roads will have the majority of national franchise chains, the high streets will have the local restaurants.
Is Portillos a national chain, yet?
“I just said Donald J Trump, not that loud. It was amazing. within a minute, everyone in that line and the next were almost screaming about stolen, cheated, we will leave, and we will all die- what came to be the usual retard reaction.

Cute story, but not believable. I doubt you ever shopped at Whole Foods, then people in line “were almost screaming” this sort of thing in public to strangers in the grocery store line? Nah.

Hillary, darn auto-correct
I'm one of the elitist snobs who eschews chain restaurants, but the fact is that they thrive because people like them. They serve reliably decent food. You know, what their customers actually want. If you consider chain restaurants beneath your dignity, then you must have a low opinion of most of the country, which of course Obama does. He's been pretty open about it.
*Well, why don't we focus on the fact that the more chain restaurants you have, the fewer locally owned restaurants there will be. I think you are being elitist by defending chain restaurants.*
Freder's never heard of franchises. Color me shocked.
All you snowflakes that got your pussies all sore because Obama made a joke about the Cheesecake Factory, you do understand how "jokes" work, right? I can make fun of the decor of the Cheesecake Factory and its unhinged menu and still kind of like the Cheesecake Factory. Nobody is insulting your mom or anything. Maybe thicken up that skin there, tiger!
Jeez the next thing you know MAGA is going to piss themselves over the Cracker Barrel logo. Oh, wait.... bad example.
And then Freder comes in claiming he understood.
Why don't you just admit you were being an ass, and move on?

"Freder's never heard of franchises. Color me shocked."
Your reading comprehension sucks.
And it took just a minute of searching to discover that only about 36% of full-service restaurants are franchisees and Cheesecake Factory locations are all company-owned (the numbers for fast food are much higher--something like 79%). So Althouse's point was kind of weak.
“Jeez the next thing you know MAGA is going to piss themselves over the Cracker Barrel logo. Oh, wait.... bad example.”
Bud Light, Brian Mulvaney, ooooo the outrage.
"And it took just a minute of searching to discover that only about 36% of full-service restaurants are franchisees and Cheesecake Factory locations are all company-owned (the numbers for fast food are much higher--something like 79%). So Althouse's point was kind of weak."
No. My point was a response to this statement of yours:
"Well, why don't we focus on the fact that the more chain restaurants you have, the fewer locally owned restaurants there will be. I think you are being elitist by defending chain restaurants."
That is about chain restaurants generally, not Cracker Barrel specifically, and my point is correct. Most chain restaurants are locally owned. I think the percentage is something like 80%.
You proceeded to argue using Applebees as an example, noting that the franchise "will set you back half a million minimum."
That made me look into how someone who wants to open a restaurant — locally — would go about deciding whether to run a chain restaurant or devise their own independent business model. It's not obvious which would be the best decision. It depends on many factors.
But the question in this discussion has been, all along, whether we ought to look down on chain restaurants. My position has been that it's bad to display snobbery toward these businesses, and I say that as someone who probably dislikes chain restaurants more than you do. (I dislike most restaurants though, including many high-priced independent businesses, and I almost never go to these places and even avoid most travel largely because I find restaurants dull.)
But I believe in showing respect to people who are working hard, trying to make money at a business and to people who are just trying to enjoy life a little by patronizing restaurants where they have a good time and feel satisfied.
Even if you don't respect any of that, you should value your own reputation and be conscious of what makes you sound like a snob. Especially if you're in politics, like Obama.
On The Five just now, Jesse Watters admitted that had Obama tried any WH renovations during his terms, Fox News would have been all over him. In other words, it's just a political stone to throw. CC, JSM
White House we all know and love = cheesecake factory we all
White House remodelled by Trump = cheesecake factory remodelled by saddam hidden.
Nothing negative about the Factory. Put on your logic caps folks.
Obama’s mistake was referencing a restaurant he’s likely never been to. The line was obviously written for him, he chose to keep it. The line bombed because he did not understand the jist of it, then the stupidity of keeping it, then the arrogance of reciting it.
The Factory has been around for decades and I bet Obama has been there a few times. You know who has prob never been?

That’s an impressive amount of moral philosophy to extract from a joke about interior decorating. Nobody said people who eat at chain restaurants are inferior. The point was that the White House shouldn’t look like one. There is, believe it or not, a distinction.
Google AI informs me that there are no Cheesecake Factory restaurants on Martha's Vineyard, in the Kalorama neighborhood of DC, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, or in Waimanalo, Hawaii. What a shocker!
A true man of the people.
“Obama wasn't trolling. He was being himself - an arrogant, condescending prick who looks down his nose at everybody else.”
@Jim at, when you’re right, you are right!
Speaking of elitism…
“President Donald Trump joked at a campaign on Tuesday that a proposed $5,000 "Trump Dividend" would barely cover a hamburger and a dessert at his private Mar-a-Lago resort. Addressing a crowd in Corpus Christi, Texas, ahead of the midterm elections.
The Mar-a-Lago Punchline: While listing places Americans could spend the money, Trump said, "You can even come to Mar-a-Lago... The problem is that for $5,000, the most you'll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert." He chuckled and added, "No, don't go there. That's not a good place if you're price-conscious."“
“Price conscious”? Does he mean if you’re not filthy rich? Sounds like he doesn’t want average income Americans at Mar a Lago. He doesn’t even want to admit Americans are affected by affordability.
Shouldn't you at least include where on the intertubes you're copying from?
7:13 quote from Google AI.
Is that Cheese Factory still a thing? What's significant is what wasn't said. Here we are in the last few days before an important election and Obama (and Clinton) are avoiding the usual, played-out Democrat themes and talking about style and interior design. Apparently, they, and the media, and the public recognize that most of what politicians say is just insincere, manipulative blablabla.
Not suprising that Obama is sneering at middle American fast food. Given that he grew up in Indonesia and hawaii in the 60s and 70s. And went to an elite Private high school.
After that he was in LA for two years, and then Chicago, Manhattan, and Harvard Law. By the time he was in the Illinois State Legislature he was firmly in the ruling class and no doubt going to expensive restaurants.
But according to Grok - Obama likes Cheeseburgers (Dinner style).
Like most things Trump touches there is a remarkable vulgarity that’s unique to his style. As for emulating Rome, European and Russian imperial palaces, Trump has no concept of proportion or nuance, resulting in white stucco gilded concrete or hideous proportions, often lacking context to its surroundings. They will be permanent reminders that legacy cannot be commanded, only earned, and that insecurity rendered in architecture remains transparent no matter how much gold leaf obscures the façade.
