Everything about this sucks. Ukraine hasn't held elections in years. We used to all such places "rogue states." I don't like Elon playing God. I also don't like American support for rogue states run by the Ukrainian voice of Paddington Bear. Hold elections or no American support.

It's amazing to me how all-in Democrats are on a war with a nuclear power with 5,000 warheads, a war that Joe Biden started by having his Secretary of State, Joe Biden, say that Ukraine was coming into NATO and the subject of nuclear weapons 200 miles from Moscow, and bases with F-35s 200 miles from Moscow was not up for discussion. Actually Obama started it when his coup overthrew the democratically elected leader of Ukraine and sparked off a civil war.

Paul Krugman is an idiot.

Aggie বলেছেন...

But I've read that this is all a ploy by what's his name, the Head Skimmer, Zelensky. Complaining about Starlink, which is a commercial service, being slowed down, when Elon has said it cannot be used for war operations, targeting. Musk has said that up front. And of course any system is prone to technical faults, and this hasn't been ruled out anywhere that I've seen. Just accusations that it was slowed down.

What Zelensky is angling for, is access to StarShield, which is operated by the US Gov, as part of the wartime tool chest. It is used for targeting, and operates at a much higher level than Starlink. Which is precisely why it isn't being made available to Ukraine.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

And of course, when Leftwing Billionaires get involved in politics or use their power - that's great. Like the ones that Debanked Trump or kept him from using social media. Lets give the Soros family a MSM round of applause!

But when Republican Billionaire Musk does it, well we need to do something about Rich people controlling our lives. they have to much influence Where's the Democracy?

And who does this Rich Republican guy think he is? Maybe we need to nationalize his companies.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

IRC, Musk stated that starlink is not there for countries to use for offensive purposes. Ukraine was using Starlink to attack targets hundreds of miles into Russia.

But its back online because Trump is negotiating with Russia and Zelensky.

Aggie বলেছেন...

I agree with DDD about the holding of elections. Ukraine is a highly corrupt state, and always has been. They should be holding elections, or they should stop calling themselves a Democratic society. Of course, that would make it harder for Europe to keep them under a thumb.

'I don't like Elon playing God.' Oh nonsense. Progressives can't stand that Elon is the richest man on Earth, and think all that money can't be defended by one man, so they should relieve him of some or all of it. They cannot stand one man serving as an example of unfettered success. It's not the 'success' part, it's the 'unfettered' part that bugs them.

Except, in the end, it has to be. The only feasible way to take StarLink away from Musk would be to condemn the company and pay just compensation for the expropriation. The government would be obliged to pay even if it is a partial, significant, Taking. Throw in his ability to hire the best attorneys in the country, and keep the case open for years, if not decades. And the fact that the 1st Amdt would be central to his case.

Something to keep in mind. The DOJ Antitrust division sued to break up both AT&T and IBM. They won with ATT, but IBM was dropped. Equities were probably the other way around. How did IBM effectively win the case? By buying former DOJ antitrust honchos, and dragging out the case until a new Administration, where their guy was installed as the Antitrust AAG. And IBM had a fraction of the money that Musk does.

Why not? It's a piece of personal property belonging to Elon Musk. Or is it part of the company that went public?

EIther way, governments have nationalized industries in the interest of "natinal security" before. If the government wants to take over Starlink it can do it. There is precedent.

Bruce Hayden বলেছেন...

“EIther way, governments have nationalized industries in the interest of "natinal security" before. If the government wants to take over Starlink it can do it. There is precedent.”

Yes, and it has been limited. Think Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer, 343 U.S. 579. Moreover, the seizure would be subject to the 5th Amdt Takings clause. Just compensation would be required. Moreover, SpaceX helps make StarLink effective. Right now, StarLink has priority for its low cost, frequent, launches below the USG - which is another issue). So, what happens if StarLink launches are deprioritized? Would the US have to seize SpaceX too? We are now talking over $trillion$ in takings.

Dogma and Pony Show বলেছেন...

The Takings Clause enables the government to acquire ownership of private property deemed necessary for public purposes. It doesn't generally empower the government to nationalize entire corporations or industries simply to run those businesses in the manner it prefers. I think that if the government were unhappy with what Elon allegedly did vis-a-vis Ukraine, it would have to try to find some way to address it through regulation. Doing so on the basis of "national security" would be a tough sell because the U.S. has no treaty obligations to defend Ukraine's borders.

In terms of power and access to many services, some government people are far better situated that Elon Musk. Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

"Ukraine hasn't held elections in years" (first comment) because Russia bombs civilian gatherings whenever they can: apartment blocks at night, shopping centers, schools, parks, hospitals, train stations, and moving trains in the day time, because that's when they're most crowded. They killed a 1-year-old in a stroller and her mother and several other people in a park just a couple of days ago. Civilian deaths are way up in the last month, and a lot of that is because of the Starlink slowdown, plus lack of interceptors (Patriots).

Polling places would make particularly juicy targets, since they have to have known locations and fixed opening hours when they will be crowded. Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked for a two-month truce so he could hold elections, and Russia has refused.

I've noted before (to deafening silence from the usual crowd) that Britain had no elections during World War II because they were being bombed. By the end of the war, Churchill was a lot further beyond the end of his term than Zelenskyy is now. And Britain had less excuse: bombing was far less accurate then, so Hitler could not have struck polling places consistently, plus ~20% of Ukraine is occupied, where the percentage of Britain under enemy occupation was a tiny fraction of 1% (the Channel Islands).

Finally, those who complain about Zelenskyy's extended term should note two things:

1. The two people with a fair chance of beating him in an election, Zaluzhnyi and Budanov, are at least as firmly anti-Russian as he is, if not more so.

2. Russia has a two-term limit for presidents, but Putin was just reelected to his sixth term. Why don't any of you think he's illegitimate? And those who've checked the numbers say that there are clear signs of tampering, and the number of legitimate votes he got last time around may have been as low as 35%. (A strong sign of incompetent ballot-tampering is to look at the last digit of the local totals. There should be roughly equal numbers of vote totals ending in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 0. If you get a hugely disproportionate number of totals ending in 5 and especially 0, which is what happened in the last two Russian elections, it means local officials are just pulling totals out of their asses and are too lazy or too stupid to even make them plausible by picking numbers like 587 instead of 650.)

P.S. I should have mentioned: Russia has been systematically attacking Ukrainian power plants, heating plants, water supplies, and the bridges over the Dnipro, as well as pharmaceutical and book warehouses. They destroyed a third of the unsold books in Ukraine right before school started. The propagandists on RT are quite openly boasting about making Ukraine uninhabitable. All those are war crimes. Meanwhile, Ukraine only hits military or dual-use targets: arms factories and warehouses, military bases, military ships and aircraft, ships exporting stolen Ukrainian grain, oil tankers, and refineries (dual use). Russia has been hitting neutral ships in NATO waters, including one of the few wine tankers in the world, off the coast of Romania: it carries enough wine to fill 8,400,000 bottles. Anyone who thinks the two sides are equally at fault is grossly ignorant, irremediably stupid, or a pro-Putin bigot.

Who was attacking Moscow and other cities during the Russian Election?

And of course, the numerous gangster like assassinations by the ukrainian secret service are too numerous to mention. The mossad or Al capone would admire them. They even tried to kill a Russian writer - and missed. They only killed his daughter.

Anyone pretending the Ukrainian state is moral, and Russia isnt, is just blowing propaganda smoke up your ass.

The fact is that the nearest part of Ukraine to Moscow is ~320 miles away, and that the nearest part of Latvia, already a member of NATO, is only 380 miles from Moscow. The speed of nuclear missiles makes a difference of 60 miles trivial, and only a moron thinks anyone in NATO is the slightest bit interested in a first strike. Again, Barnacle Jaq repeats Putinite propaganda straight off of RT - which, by the way, has numerous talking heads talking about nuking us.

Jim at বলেছেন...

Somebody take away Krugman's fax machine.

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

RCOCEAN II just can't help lying. "Who was shelling Russian and Ukrainian civilians in Crimea and the Donbas?" Not Ukraine. The only "civilians" they fired on were Russian regulars firing at them while not wearing uniforms, which is a war crime. The Kerch Bridge was built illegally on occupied Ukrainian territory, and Ukraine had (and has) a perfect right to knock it down. And they offered to stop bombing Russia during Russia's election, but Russia kept bombing them. And they did not in fact hit any polling places, because they don't attack civilian targets.

"Who has refused an agreement to stop attacking oil facilities?" Not Ukraine. They agreed to a two-way cessation of such attacks, and Trump claimed there was such an agreement, but Russia hit several Ukrainian power plants less than two hours later, while denying there was any such agreement. Ukraine has also suggested a Black Sea truce, where they will stop hitting ships in Russian waters, if Russia will stop hitting ships in Ukrainian, Romanian, and Bulgarian waters. It's Russia that refuses.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Ukraine murdered Dugin's daughter, who had made lots of Russian enemies. (She was openly saying she would make a better military leader than Shoigu.) And there was no reason why they should want her dead. The people they have assassinated have all been war criminals (like the ones Mossad assassinates): for instance, the bomber pilot who was interviewed on Russian television about the best way to maximize casualties when hitting an apartment block. He was shot dead while jogging a few months later, as he very much deserved.

Finally, the U.S. had elections during the Civil War (did the Confederacy? I don't recall) because airplanes hadn't been invented yet, so there was no possibility of being murdered while voting! How stupid do you have to be not to know that? And the U.S. in both world wars was out of range of enemy bombers, unlike Britain, which, to repeat, did cancel elections.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

Starshield is just a subset of Starlink that has been made more secure and reliable and jamming resistant. SpaceX owns and operates both. The US has a contract with SpaceX for services on starlink, consumer, and Starshield, military that it allows Ukraine to use. Poland also pays SpaceX for Starlink services forUkraine military and civilian internet comms, this is all public information.

Without seeing what is in that contract you don’t know what services SpaceX provides to Ukraine and what the guardrails or limits are, and what SpaceX is obligated to supply under contract.

So we don’t know from public records if a contract was violated, or if the US government controls what Ukraine gets to do. All we know is that Ukraine claims that its new high speed drones stopped working and the US and SpaceX have made conflicting claims why.

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

Another amazing falsehood from RCOCEAN II: "Even the UK was having by-elections during WW2."

Two minutes research found this information (link): "The by-elections of 1939–45 were so unlike normal by-elections that at first it is hard to make sense of them. There were no contests between the three main parties. At the outbreak of the war, under the Chamberlain government, the Chief Whips of the Liberal, Labour and Conservative parties concluded an electoral truce whereby, when a seat fell vacant, the party which had held it previously would nominate a candidate, while the other two parties agreed not to do so. . . . Of the 141 seats which fell vacant during the war, 66 were filled unopposed, by the nominee of the incumbent party."

In other words, there were in fact no actual contested by-elections in the UK during World War II.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

And remember, early in the war SpaceX moved quickly and donated thousands of Starlink terminals and their initial internet service. In the first roughly 5,000-terminal delivery reported in April 2022, SpaceX donated about 3,667, the US paid for the rest.

It provided a critically important communications lifeline, helping Ukraine keep government, civilian services, and military units connected when other infrastructure was damaged or disrupted. So a significant military aid to the defense of Ukraine.

Somebody's projecting here, and it's not me. Poor stupid bastard can't even deny that he hates Zelenskyy as a Jew, or that he thinks you can have an "election" with only one candidate and (as far as I can tell) no voting.

Why didn't Achilles and all his "guys with guns" stop the "2020 election theft"? Wasn't that cause enough to mobilize your militia, tough guy? Why not? Because it was horseshit? Or because you and your make believe revolutionaries didn't think a "stolen Presidential election" was important enough an issue?

I told you retards at the time this was the best outcome in the long term.

And here we are.

You dumbfucks would have had President Newsome right now after Trump spent 2020-2024 getting impeached and spinning his wheels.

But here we are.

Trump is completely running the table on the globalist WEF and democrat fucktits are being arrested and deported.

The best thing right now is to have democrats win take control of the house and impeach Trump 672 times over the next two years while Trump rebuilds manufacturing and our middle class and finishes off Europe.

You are just too stupid to see how these outcomes play out.

Musk is upset that all the pro-Russia and pro-AfD bots have gone offline since the Russian data centers got hit.

Trump gets off a long call with Putin (again) and starts parroting Kremlin talking points about Ukraine and Zelensky (again), while threatening to cut off intelligence sharing and the PURL program. Then Ukraine reports restrictions on its military Starlink service as Russian missiles hammer civilians and infrastructure. That service is supplied under Pentagon contracts. Trump and Hegseth owe us an explanation: did the Pentagon authorize the restrictions, or did Musk impose them on his own? Ukraine says it wasn’t even warned. The timing sure looks suspicious.

Meanwhile, Putin dangles oil deals, and Trump, his son-in-law, and Witkoff seem more interested in business opportunities with an American adversary than helping the people being bombed by Putin. Ukraine pays the price. And American credibility and American values sink ever lower under Trump.

Trump is not alone in this shameless treatment of Zelensky and Ukraine. Spineless Republicans in Congress and the Senate, many privately appalled by the administration’s preference for Putin’s regime over Ukraine, remain silent and do little.

Trump has exploited the fiction that he is a neutral broker seeking peace between the combatants. Zelensky is saying what anyone paying attention already knows: Trump is tilting the playing field in Russia’s favor, seeking to hand Putin at the negotiating table what he cannot win on the battlefield, at Ukraine’s expense.

Too many Americans hear Trump’s claims of peacemaking without seeing through the pretense. Zelensky’s blunt words strip away that façade. They may do little to change Trump’s course, but they make it harder for him to disguise whose interests he is serving. If Trump intends to go all-in for Putin, let him do so in full view of the American public, leaving no doubt about which side he has chosen.

**Starlink was supposed to bargain for peace, to help force Russia to Ukraine's favor.**

That's complete bullshit.

Michael McNeil বলেছেন...

Americans are so parochial. Starlink now serves something like 172 countries, with a subscribing population of perhaps 10 million. Meanwhile, the American subscriber base is merely around 4 million. So, the U.S. is basically going to war with Musk, then seize Starlink, to become the internet service provider to the world? Or are those international rural subscribers going to be left hanging?

If Democrats win control of the federal government and proceed to attempt to seize Starlink not to speak of imprison Musk, I favor his deorbiting the entire system. Could they stop him? No. Then tell the federal government to do it itself. Their no doubt half assed effort to do that should be quite amusing.

He's acknowledged (7:44pm) the possibility that he might in some circumstances have to admit having "taken stupid pills". He just doesn't realize he's already in those circumstances.

So the communists are starting to talk about nationalizing starlink. They WILL ultimately put you against a wall.

Providing starlink to Ukraine was a horrible decision. Ever since he did it he has been criticized about not using it for offensive purposes, not doing it for free and now not doing what the dictator Zelensky and the effing Europeans say.

Turrible decision. It’s like a parent who stops paying this bum kids rent or telephone plane.

Trump knows his switching sides and supporting Putin is extremely unpopular with the American population. That’s why he lies about it.

The Trump Administration first denied involvement and now are saying it is fixed, implying there was a decision by someone in the US Administration and or Musk, to block the usage of Starlink and Starshield.

But it clearly is not fixed, so someone is deliberately continuing to hinder Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. Increasingly Trump and Putin’s supporters are one in the same, although perhaps it was always the case, it is just out in the open these days.

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

Only a fool would think that Zelenskyy's height (same as Putin's, by the way) has any bearing whatsoever on the rights and wrongs of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. And only a fool thinks Zelenskyy is a "dictator". A lot of fools in the comment section today.

I appreciate your thoughtful, independent perspective on Ukraine, it’s refreshing to hear a view that goes beyond MAGA chanting points.

Leland বলেছেন...

It appears now that there wasn’t a slowdown. Rather Ukraine had hacked Starlink in a manner that allowed it to bypass speed restrictions. A routine software fix to close vulnerabilities broke the Ukraine hack. It also blocked hacks add by Russia. Apparently, marxist want security vulnerabilities as excuses to nationalize private infrastructure, because they wouldn’t be Marxist otherwise.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ বলেছেন...

The claim that Ukraine had hacked Starlink to bypass speed restrictions is unsubstantiated. There’s no credible evidence that a routine software update broke a Ukrainian workaround. Presenting speculation as established fact doesn’t make it so.

Bruce Hayden বলেছেন...

“0The claim that Ukraine had hacked Starlink to bypass speed restrictions is unsubstantiated. There’s no credible evidence that a routine software update broke a Ukrainian workaround. Presenting speculation as established fact doesn’t make it so.”

Of course it was unsubstantiated - it wasn’t in the NYT. Thats your standard excuse. Even if the facts you are dismissing have been well documented in less leftist sources for years.

But I kinda agree. My suspicion that the specifics are being deliberately fudged a bit. In particular that it was a routine update that broke the hack. My guess is that the fixes were intentional, and just slipped into the routine updates. My guess is that the speed was necessary for Ukrainian targeting or control of their drones, and that had been limited by StarLink because they had determined no offensive military use of StarLink by either side, and that was how they were violating that. And, yes, if anyone was smart and clever enough to work around this, it would be the Ukrainians. They appear far smarter than the Russians in that regard, and I expect that their cleverness was heavily used by the USSR.

In any case, Musk made that policy decision - to not allow offensive military use of StarLink. Ukrainian hackers got around the speed block. StarLink discovered that, investigated, found out how, and closed the vulnerability by inserting the fix into a routine updated, putting the Ukrainians back where they had been. Close to the story being put out.

My guess is that this policy decision was a marketing decision, in order to reduce state interference with StarLink sales. How do Russia, China, Iran, and a dozen other countries around the world allow StarLink to operate in their countries, if they were a US asset? If they allowed offensive use of their network, but only when the US decided it was ok?

No wonder Krugman wants US ownership and control of Starlink. Good for US interests. Not so good for StarLink selling into other countries. Moreover, the Chinese are working to be able to takedown the StarLink system. They assume that StarLink will help the US in any conflict with them. And don’t want the first step in any such conflict being their destruction.
