After that, he went to rehab and later testified that he was on alcohol, Valium and sleeping pills and did not recall the incident. He was ultimately convicted by a French court of “public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity”.
Fast forward 15 years. It comes time to choose the next theme for the Met Ball.... Wintour proudly announced that the disgraced designer would be the honoree, stating that “there is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano”....

Always reading the tea leaves, Wintour knows that this is the Age of Approved Jew Hate. So she's jumping into the deep end.
Nothing about her says decent human being. It never has. She's just being who she has always been.
And...a quick point: Her goal is clicks. Marketing. Buzz. She knows what the people will react to and what will bring eyes to her event, which, let's face it, without the approved buzz would be ridiculed. The Met Gala is one of the most conspicuous displays of wealth and privilege in American popular culture, wrapped in the justification of art, fashion, and philanthropy. If this were a room full of conservatives, there would be a mile thick protest wall around them.
It was a bit out of touch to think that a reaction against antisemitic remarks would have died down after 15 years when, in fact, antisemitism has increased so sharply during those same years that it was certain that there would be a strong reaction in the Jewish community to honoring someone known for the ugliest sort of remarks. And the Jewish community in NYC is a strong supporter of the Met. So why would a fashion person be so blind to the look of the thing, to the look of the Met honoring an antisemite? I don't know, except that NYC as whole seems out of touch with reality as a whole. This might be one little minor but typical consequence.
I enjoy a shot of Galliano in my morning coffee.

I had the good fortune as a 6 year old to have a grandfather who explained to me, after I asked him about a loudly spoken public slur that we both heard ("ya cheap Jew"), that Jews were not in fact cheap. He explained that, in his experience they were among the most generous people that he knew. That tracks with my own adult experience. I've also learned that the contributions of Jews to our civilization are unmatched. Yes, there are structural threads of neuroticism, self hatred, and moral grandstanding within world Jewry, but all in all the one ethnic group that doesn't deserve destruction (in addition of course to my own) is the Jews.
I don't understand the people who go out of their way to express hatred for Jews. Where's the big emotional payoff? How does it make you feel better? It's a dead end.
My problem is ignorance. I know Diana Wintour is a contemptible piece of baggage; this is well established. Therefore, her sponsorship of a party for another contemptible POS like John Galliano is a given. No mystery here. However, thanks to Althouse, I now know that the Met Gala has been scrapped, but I don't know why. The "why" is the tidbit offered by The Times, but it costs a dollar. There was a distant and sorely missed epoch when The Times was well worth a buck, even a quid, but now?

How and when to punish people for abusing alcohol, and other substances, is a tricky question. We live in a society that prides itself on trying not to be too judgmental, but they'll throw the book at you for drunk driving. In 2022 the NYT characterized Nick Fuentes as a “White Supremacist” for talking about using federal troops to bring down black on black crime and because of his antisemitic remarks. But the homicide rate in DC did fall after Trump sent in the National Guard, and now there are Democrat political candidates expressing much nastier antisemitic sentiments.

Fair enough. Let me make my meaning clear. There are Talmudic writings which explicitly counsel Jews to take advantage of the goyim (which means animals), and indeed says that it is sinful for a Jewish doctor to treat a goy.

The Met Gala has turned into a celebrity circus that is more about costumes than fashion. It might also be time for Anna Wintour to step down in favor of new leadership with a better vision for the future. Galliano is one of her pets, so this is on her as much as the Met’s leadership.

I’m replying to two at once because, on this subject, at least, they are two pea-brains from the same pod. And just to make things perfectly clear in case anyone assumes Quaestor is some sort of JOO, I’m not. My genetic heritage as far back as can be established is entirely northwest European. My Y chromosome haplogroup dead ends somewhere in Denmark or Norway in the 8th century. In other words, go back 62 generation in my line and you'll meet a literal viking. The Talmud is a 42-volume compendium of scholarly debates about the law applied to specific cases, often extreme hypothetical scenarios. Layered on top of the original arguments are additional commentary from other scholars. If you want to want to know Jewish law, study Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. It’s all there. I you want to know how the law is interpreted and applied, you study the casebooks. The casebooks of Jewish Biblical law are complied in the Talmud. The Talmud contains some shocking stuff. The casebooks of anybody’s law code frequently are shocking. People do bad things to each other. That’s why laws exist.

What's very ironic to me about this whole issue of whether "goy" is a slur is the fact that it was used that way by my grandparents' generation because they had suffered so much persecution in their lives. They were used to genuine harm, pogroms and discrimination, at the hands of Christians. My grandmother, for example, who grew up in Russia was told on her first day of school that she could not attend because the quota of Jews had been filled. There she was, a little girl all dressed up and excited to go to school, and was told to leave. I was so young when she told me this, probably only about five years old, but she wanted me to know what happened to her. She taught herself to read btw. Here in the US her little brother was able to become a lawyer, his son was able to become a Federal Judge (the late Edward R. Becker). One of my great grandfathers was kidnapped as a little child into the Russian army, given no Jewish education. Eventually he escaped somehow and returned to his village in Sevastopol knowing no one, had to start his life from scratch as a grown man. This was considered normal treatment of Jews and this was what was expected from "goyim." His grandson, my father, here in the US was able to become a doctor. You understand, they left that miserable treatment by goyim behind. Or we thought they did.
So now I'm hearing this word goy again, after thinking for six decades that deep Jew hatred was mostly gone. We've seen recently how untrue that is. But instead of admitting to and apologizing for the centuries of horrors inflicted on the Jewish people, the Jew haters are now turning their guilt around and crying about Jews of saying bad words about them. The Jew haters are the victims here. Doncha know.
