The problem with the “Trump knows economics” theory is that the costs are showing up rather nicely in the data. The average effective U.S. tariff rate was about 6.7% in July 2026, versus 2.3% in January 2025. Steel and aluminum were facing effective rates around 40.5%, and autos about 13%.

And tariffs aren’t paid by some mythical foreign treasury. The New York Fed estimates that about 26% of the 2025 tariff increase was passed through to consumer prices, with another channel operating through higher costs for imported inputs used by American producers.

That is showing up particularly clearly in manufacturing and construction. The Fed’s September Beige Book reports manufacturers and construction firms facing higher steel, copper and aluminum costs, with several explicitly attributing the increases to tariffs. Construction input prices rose 8.9% year-over-year in August, according to the Associated General Contractors’ analysis of government data.

Meanwhile, U.S. manufacturing output actually fell 0.3% in August, and manufacturing utilization remains well below its long-run average.

So Raymond’s observation needs a little context. The economy hasn’t collapsed—which isn’t what standard trade economics predicts. Tariffs are a tax on imports, not an automatic recession button. But “the economy hasn’t collapsed” is a rather different claim from “the tariffs haven’t harmed the economy.”

And invoking Wharton as proof that tariffs work is a particularly elegant example of confusing a credential with evidence.; 24-09-26 7:24 PM

I don't have a crystal ball. I did note all the comments on X that this is first time that oil has been <$100 barrel and gasoline has been >$4.00 a gallon. Most common theory presented- gasoline companies are in cahoots to keep prices high to help Democrats regain power. Myself? I think it's state taxes having gone up consistently. Most states tax per gallon rather then a percentage. They discovered that taxing percentage meant tax revenue from gasoline sales would sometimes (𝑮𝑨𝑺𝑷!) plummet if wholesale prices went down. Can't have decreased tax revenue now, can we? Well, not in legislator's eyes.

Diesel prices are higher because, as I said in a post a few days ago, we don't have refining capacity here to make enough diesel, so we're paying world market prices for it. Who do we have to thank for that? Democrat governance.

NY has had no refineries for a while now. NJ had 6 in 1990, down to 2 today. Total number of refineries has gone down from it's peak of about 300 in the 1980s to about 130 today. Somewhat offset by capacity increase in some of the currently operating refineries. But a decrease in numbers means more disruption if one is unexpectedly taken offline. Or if we have a weather event where they are concentrated...

But an economist or anyone else can be wrong about the magnitude or timing of an effect without the underlying economics being wrong.

The relevant question isn’t whether the economy has collapsed. It hasn’t. It’s what the tariffs are costing Americans and American businesses.

The evidence is increasingly clear. The effective U.S. tariff rate was 6.7% in July 2026, versus about 2% in 2024, according to Penn Wharton and the CBO.

So Raymond’s observation that the economy is still growing, consumers are spending and the stock market is functioning doesn’t demonstrate that tariffs are harmless. It demonstrates something much less surprising: a large economy can absorb a substantial tax on imports without immediately falling into recession.

Huh? Of course the tariffs work within the economic laws. That’s why they’re called “laws.” If the profit margins on the imported goods are low, then the manufacturer has little choice but to pass along the tariffs on to American consumers, but when the margins are high, the manufacturer has a choice: maintain profits by adding the cost of the tariffs to the cost of the goods, but become vulnerable to loss of market share. Or defend your market share by eating the tariffs, at the cost of profits. And where the manufacturers went with raising prices, to cover the cost of tariffs , it opened opportunities for American entrepreneurs to undercut them.

Good work on cherrypicking meaningless statistics, but the statistic that most impressed me was Trump achieving record lows for childhood poverty. You should be rejoicing along side me, but I guess you like it when children starve.; 24-09-26 8:49 PM

According to this article, Asunción "Sunny" Cummings Hostin is actually upset with the holdout juror, saying she believed the cannibal defendant was aware of his actions. She was upset w/the juror pushing for a NGBROI verdict.

Turns out she lied.

According to contemporaneous newspaper reports there was at least one other juror who refused to agree with the rest, identified as an unemployed man who wanted to continue to receive the $15/day juror stipend for as long as he could. The linked article also quotes Hostin giving somewhat contradictory statements regarding the verdict, in one justifying the jury finding the killer NGBRIO and in the other apparently expressing her personal view the killer was in fact guilty.; 25-09-26 6:07 AM

We tried to explain it contemporaneously and leftists here waved it away as impossible. But many of us had real-world experience with EU “non-tariff barriers” and knew that they add cost to US consumers and supply chains. Our tariffs were a punitive reaction and the producers generally ATE the difference, just like we told you they would. Walmart routinely tells suppliers to eat their cost increases to keep retail prices low and they DO IT. I have many examples like this.

Buoyed by that success, they tried the same playbook in the US months later, but voters came out and put Trump back in office. The results speak for themselves. Starmer is out but not before changing the UK for the worse. In the US, people visiting the FIFA World Cup from the UK proclaimed their media lied to them about the US.

But before the World Cup, progressives used the same UK playbook in the 2025 Canadian elections and got in Carney to replace the Trudeau. They think the strategy still works, so they are trying it again in the US in 2026. Unlike the UK pre-2024, the uni-party conservatives were voted out in primary after primary. Conservatives showed up. Now, they want us to believe the polls have changed for the upcoming General.

Elections have consequences. Whatever people want to make about individual Trump actions; you need only look to the UK and Canada (or other parts of the EU) to see what the progressive agenda will bring. I've been asking him those questions for a long time. What's the plan? Who is the candidate? The only thing he has ever provided in response was a very short list of unknown Democrats proposing "commissions" to look into the issue.

Everybody knows that the answer is to seriously cut the growth of the government monster. But nobody votes for that, and if they do the people charged with cutting the spending are the ones making bank on it. So it never happens.

Trump didn’t create America’s debt problem, but Trump and today’s Republican Congress now own the responsibility for what they do about it. CBO estimates their 2025 tax-and-spending law will add $4.7 trillion to deficits over the next decade—about 20% of the $23.1 trillion in projected deficits. Most of that increase comes from tax cuts, partially offset by spending reductions.

So here’s the question for Republicans: If you’re serious about reducing the deficit, what specific taxes are you willing to raise, what spending are you willing to cut, and what changes to entitlements are you willing to support?
