You have to read between the lines, but the obit details an unedifying life. By some metrics, though, it was successful. She definitely ended up on the ash heap of history, but quite near the top of that ash heap and the embers kept her warm.......The name Gumbo was given to her by the noted rapist Eldridge Cleaver. She didn't like being called "Mrs", so Cleaver said he'd call her "Gumbo". She liked that name and used it thereafter. What better way to fight the patriarchy than using a name given to her by a rapist......She had a tenured position, marriage to a financial planner, and a comforting sense of martyrdom as she moved through her comfortable life..

As a tender youth of 18 I attended a single SDS organizing meeting. A couple of plain, serious 30 something women showed up and held a meeting to organize a march on the state capitol? I knew at once this wasn't for me. Who were these "old" people coming to our little community college to organize know-nothing teenagers like me?
I was just there out of curiosity. I'd seen the SDS riots on TV and thought it might be fun. Plus I knew Uncle Sammy was coming for me with the draft so I was against the war. There was nothing fun about it. These people were dead serious and very businesslike. No thanks.
