To Dolly. I raise a cup of ambition.
The outpouring of affection for Dolly has amazed me. I’ve been a country music fan all my life, so, yeah., I mourn Dolly’s passing. But the mourning for Dolly is going way past those of us who loved her music and reaches people who probably never heard her sing “A Coat of Many Colors.” Wow.
Someone mentioned that Dolly is example of positive shared experiences and their importance. There seems something to that notion. She created bonds many of us didn’t know we shared.
Truly a legend. Incredible voice, whip smart and very generous. A woman who lived a blameless life and lived to help others. She said she was prouder of her work for her literacy charity than anything else she'd ever done. A colossally generous person who did so much for the world.
The BBC quoted her today as having said, "I'm not worried about all the 'd--b blonde' jokes, because I know I'm not d--b, and I know I'm not blonde." Reminds me of Marilyn Monroe's sense of humor.
Dolly Parton was the kind of American that made America great.

What a God's gift to have been given
I've been blown away by the outpouring of affection as well. I knew she was well liked, even well loved by many. But I had no idea how far and universal it was.
I saw a video this morning on X showing an appearance on some show, with Dolly centered between Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, singing the great old Neil Young song, "After the Goldrush". All three were great singers. Dolly's voice is center and amazing.

I was young when the movie 9 to 5 rolled out. I was the first in the family to see it. Like everyone else at the time, I loved the movie. I told my folks they should see it. My father grumbled quickly that no way he'd see a movie with Jane Fonda in it.
I said - but Dolly is in it!
I was just reading a discussion on reddit about what celebrities are left that are universally loved. There are very few famous people that, even if you aren't a fan, you still have positive feelings towards. There were a few listed that I did not agree with (mostly because they've made anti-Republican or anti-conservative comments or were in some way unnecessarily divisive) and a few that I did. None, I think, have the same, broad and multi-generational reach that Dolly had.
Nice gesture, but only a gesture, a token of dross. King Chuckie III would truly honor her memory by loving and protecting his native subjects rather than scorning them.

Early this morning, I was watching a bunch of videos, kind of my own personal retrospective. I came across one that I think many in the Althouse commentariat would enjoy..
It's from a September 1979 appearance on the Johnny Carson Show. I think it touches upon/distills so much of what Dolly was as well as what she presented and what made her so appealing to a very broad cross-section of Americans and the world overall. It also includes her performing a song that she wrote just for Johnny Carson.
It's worth watching just for their conversation, and the laughter, and while it's a little long, it's not a whole episode or anything. I hope you all enjoy it!
Dabney Coleman departed in 2024 with nary a blip on Hollywood's emotional radar. There's no "9 to 5" without a brilliant comedy villain.
I remember seeing that appearance on Carson, and I was only 18. It's amazing and just so great that she endured.
Coleman was brilliant in that comedy role, Quaester. You are right: The role was a very much needed foil.
Linda and Emmy Lou always wanted Dolly to sing the main parts. Beyond that voice for song, she had the most glorious laugh. Hearing her laugh couldn’t help but make you smile and feel a bit happier.
Dolly truly had the gift of Generosity, and by that I mean in mind, spirit, time, and treasure. When it comes down to it, I think that's why she was so universally loved, in addition to her music, but even that was, of course, informed by her spirit.

She had enormous ambition, of course, and the work ethic, business head, and general smarts to implement it. But the thing is, she maintained her kindness throughout. She cracked that nut. Most don't.

Dolly’s charm was completely authentic. No airs, no agenda, just genuine love and understanding for everyone. Outwardly a bit of adornment embellished a purely homespun lovely person. It’s so heartening to see everyone drawn to her for that.
One of the truly good and admirable people in show business. Infectiously positive, unstoppable and irreplaceable.

I would think Clint Eastwood (now 96 and only recently retired) would fall into that category. He seems beloved by his peers in the industry, and hasn't alienated too many people with his modest forays into politics, which have been mostly non-controversial aside from his "empty chair" speech in 2012.
Well that's amazing. Never thought the Royal family would care but what american celebs the Brits care about is often surprising.
