"On July 5, Pamela Guillen, 40, reportedly suffered a severe subdural haematoma and brain compression after hitting her head multiple times on the X2’s headrest during the [roller coaster] ride."

"She began vomiting and lost consciousness before being rushed to the hospital... Surgeons removed part of her skull to relieve pressure on her brain. She regained consciousness two weeks after the ride and has since had to relearn how to walk and talk.... Six days later Naomi Greer-Wilkinson suffered a traumatic brain injury after riding the X2. Greer-Wilkinson, a 25-year-old from Los Angeles... remains in a coma, connected to a ventilator and feeding tube.... Christopher Hawley, 22, died in June 2022 after hitting his head multiple times against the back of the seat while riding the X2. After finishing the ride, he fell to the ground and became unconscious. When doctors treating Hawley removed part of his skull, they found his brain was so swollen it was bulging out of an opening they made to relieve the pressure...."

We obviously don't know the real facts in the case, but it again sounds like lawyers shutting down any thing in society with a hint of risk. Then again, Six Flags should subtly push a marketing campaign for "The Death Ride". The lines would go for miles.

Your skull is hard. Your brain is slushy. When your body and head move fast in one direction then in another direction, your brain crashes against the inside of your skull. Do this a lot, back and forth, and you get concussions.

A thrill ride explained. You're welcome.

Talked my wife into the old wooden coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain once. Wasn’t aware of her scoliosis at the time. Her neck has never been pain-free since that ride. I don’t believe I have even tried talking her into anything since.

All entertainment is a ratchet, the only thing you can do to attract an audience is to approach new extremes. The principal directions are violence, sex, politics, and extreme physical feats. You can’t go back, you always have to be greater than or equal to the last example. There is no money in socialism if you can be a communist, no money in a 26.2 mile marathon when you can go 50. Every new carnival ride needs more acceleration. There is no way out.

At the edge designers face the weak link. Astronauts and rocket sled riders can go beyond 12 g but a certain fraction of the public will be damaged because they are not prime specimens. I don’t think having them sign a waiver helps anymore.

Subdural assault without pressurization suited to mitigate abortive progression.

From grok - Over its lifespan since reopening with upgrades in 2008, an estimated 30.6 million people have ridden the coaster, averaging roughly 1.5 million to 2 million rides per year depending on annual operating schedules

I've been on X2. It's the scariest roller coaster I've ever been on. My husband loved it and went on again.

You'd never get me to go on one of those things. Rather than being exhilerated at the speed and danger, I just feel uncomfortable. I think its tied to my fear of heights. I get very nervous when near edges of cliffs when everyone else wants to get closer "and take a better look".

My daughter is still teasing me over my getting scared on a Ferris wheel. The ferris wheel car thing tipped up and down, had slippery seats, and worse of all I was in the seat that was going backwards.

I will stay with Pirates of the caribbean and Mr. toads wild ride.

OTOH, I loved kyacking the rapids and surfing. So, I can understand others liking the speed.

Diversity (i.e. individual, not class) ordered risk is a hidden, first-order forcing of catastrophic [anthropogenic] climate change. There are Diverse causes, including: a bike ride, a meal, angular acceleration, even evolution that conceives and aborts all carbon-based lifeforms. Some choices are voluntary and can be managed.

Man, I loved coasters when I was young. Can't do them now - I grey out just on the drops, with no need for the high-G turns out inversions.

But I do still enjoy VR "enhanced reality" rides, or whatever they call them - where they strap you into a seat on a platform that rocks and sways with the immersive video around you. Almost all the excitement, almost none of the risk.

Btw, I went on in 2005 so I really can't imagine the ride had been so dangerous for so long.

I remember when somebody had a water ride in the heartland a few years back that decapitated a kid. Probably not a good idea for a ride, when it kills some measurable percentage of your clients.

They're pretty clear about who accepts the risk in the fine print on your ticket. I guess the courts will help the business heads decide whether the risk has been acceptable or not.

soft people make for bad times. I don't know how a park can measure emotional and mental petiteness, like you can measure height.

I guess the lawyers were on vacation. The first person injured has a good case. The second has a great case.

Rollercoaster, my head! (Say what?)

Ooh, ooh, OW! OW!

As a kid in SoCal, I remember the Cyclone Racer at the Long Beach Pike and the legend of some sailors in port riding it and being decapitated.

Since I reached age 30 or so, I have come to loathe roller coasters and will never ride one again.

Lazarus বলেছেন...

The roller coaster isn't recommended for those over 60 or with other health problems. I'd sue, but I don't want to die if I win.

I remember Dr. Maturin in the Aubrey sea novels. Sailors would fall to the deck and get a subdural haematoma and need a trepanning. The Dr. would core drill a skull piece out of the head and pierce the dura matter with a needle to release the pressure and squeeze the blood out, then melt a silver coin and fit it back into the hole and sew up the scalp. A very useful skill. I always wondered about the coin though I guess they let it cool down.

I used to love rollercoaster riding but then I had a detached retina and that went away (G-forces not good for those)
