"The Trump Presidency likely wouldn’t have been possible without 'The Apprentice.’ Duffy’s rise has been less meteoric, but his launchpad, if anything, was an even purer distillation of the genre; as my colleague Emily Nussbaum has written, 'The Real World' pioneered many of reality TV’s modern tropes—the cast of strangers, the apartment as set, the confessional interviews—and cultivated a viewership.... When I revisited the show earlier this summer, it seemed a particularly propitious moment to assert the ongoing influence of reality TV, not least in politics. Spencer Pratt, the villain from 'The Hills,' was running for mayor of Los Angeles, depicting the city as a hellhole and attracting reams of media coverage. Luke Gulbranson ('Summer House') was running for a (year-round) U.S. House seat in Minnesota. Mark Moran ('FBoy Island') was running for Senate in Virginia. The moment no longer seems so propitious. Moran dropped out; Gulbranson lost, as, more significantly, did Pratt, occasioning some hand-wringing about whether his supposed surge had ever been real to begin with. (In fairness, almost nothing is more reality-TV than that.)..."

I can’t find any information on Jon Allsop’s experience beyond being a journalist. That is, all he seems to know is media, which seems to be the complaint about Trump’s, Duffy’s, and Pratt’s experience. Yet, only Spencer Pratt’s experience seems as limited. Duffy has been a DA, Congressman, and TV media personality. Trump ran many businesses before becoming a TV media personality.
Otherwise, anyone in politics will tell you that name recognition is much of the battle in winning a contested election, and reality tv is just one way to get it.

Is the economy the most important issue? It seems obvious to me that Trump is trying very hard, so far successfully, to avoid World War III. Arguably, we're already in World War III, and he's trying to keep it from turning into a total hot war, though it's already lukewarm everywhere and hot in Ukraine and the Gulf. Russia, China, and Iran are trying to destroy Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel, respectively, and all have further goals beyond those three (the Baltics, the Philippines, the Gulf states, and more). They're arming each other, aiming to kill Americans and their allies.
So far, Trump has managed to confine Iran, deter China, and at least keep Russia from overrunning Ukraine, though he could do a lot more for the last. He's eliminated the threat from Venezuela, and is well on his way to neutralizing Cuba, too. So far, so good, but there's still plenty to worry about. The deficit is a relatively minor distraction at this point: world-wide war and the ensuing Even Greater Depression would be a lot more expensive than rearmament.
Spencer Pratt's reality show villain background was a footnote. He was a real candidate and I still wonder how he failed to make the final. LA is left with a choice between very bad and much worse.
